Director George Miller made the world wait some 30 years for a fourth ‘Mad Max’ film, but the brilliant, kinetic, and innovative ‘Fury Road’ more than rewarded our patience. The Oscar-winning film – not to mention one of the best-reviewed action movies of all time – unites us once again with Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy). But the story ultimately belongs to Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), who frees five enslaved wives from the evil warlord Immortan Joe in a move that kicks off the thrilling chase that takes up the movie’s runtime. In this exclusive extended interview, Miller breaks down why the hero of ‘Fury Road’ had to be Furiosa – and why Furiosa had to be played by Theron – as well as why the film took so long to get off the ground and how he and Theron created a cathartic climax as the female warrior confronts the vicious warlord.
