Baby Boomers Guide to Life in the 21st Century
Multi award-winning weekly health and lifestyle program for senior Aussies. Hosted by entertainment icons and MACA Senior Influencers of the year - Lex Marinos and Patricia 'Little Pattie' Amphlett.
Full Episode: Panel Discussion - Decade of Healthy Ageing

In our panel discussion on the United Nations' Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030) we welcome Craig Gear OAM - CEO of the Older Persons Advocacy Network, Yumi Lee - CEO Older Women’s Network NSW and Lee-Fay Low - Professor in Ageing & Health at the University of Sydney.

Among the many topics addressed, Lee-Fay Low talks about dementia and the battle to get a better deal for the half a million Australians living with the condition. Craig Gear highlights the subtle and pernicious effects of ageism and the enshrining of Human Rights in the Aged Care Act. Yumi Lee outlines some of the many circumstances that can lead to women’s homelessness with more than 400,000 over-45s currently at risk.

Elder abuse issues encompassing psychological, neglect, financial and sexual are also raised in the discussion. Yumi Lee draws attention to the deeply disturbing fact that some 50 people are sexually assaulted in aged care every week.

Although the troubles experienced by our elders are difficult to confront, each panel member makes a difference through their passionate advocacy for seniors’ welfare. They point to incremental improvement and recent legislation as reasons to be optimistic about a better future.

In Nostalgia Town we take a look back at the people Lex & Patricia have spoken to in 2022.

Among an inspiring set of guests, we’ll hear snippets from Jenny Hocking talking about the Whitlam years, Max Ball discussing Vietnam Veterans, Gary Foley and Thomas Mayo on indigenous issues, Craig Gear speaking about aged care, Vivian Wuthrich on mental health and Claudia Baldwin on Climate change. We also hear from celebrity guests Noeline Brown, Lucky Starr, John Williamson, Toni Lamond, Ita Buttrose, Kate McClymont, Kerry O’Brien and Carlotta.

Out Money Extra guest finance expert, Noel Whittaker AM talks about how to maximise the aged pension. He outlines the assets and income test and what is exempt and what’s not. Your home for example is exempt but assets such as caravans and furnishings are not.

We head to Orange in NSW for Steppin’ Out to meet a fascinating lady, Amanda Spalding of radio FM107.5. Amanda is chair and a presenter at the station, a local councillor and board member for Arts Out West.

Amanda talks about the Central West's cultural attractions as well as its thriving wine industry and many sporting events. Her own affiliation with sport included a position as the first female board member of England’s Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club.

Full Episode: Boomer Era Migrants

Leading into International Migrants Day (18 December) we hear migration narratives from three different perspectives. Dr Alexandra Dellios author and cultural historian, singer and entertainer Kamahl, and asylum-seeker volunteer Geraldine Butler.

Alexandra discusses the influx of post-war migrants and the changing demographics of Australia. She also speaks about Bonegilla in Victoria which accommodated some 320,000 post-war refugees and migrants between 1947 to 1971.

In Nostalgia Town, Lex & Patricia discover that not only is the legendary Kamahl a great singer, he is also a brilliant raconteur.

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Kamahl tells his own migration story and talks about being ‘discovered’ by Rupert Murdoch.

Now 87-years-old, Kamahl is cherished for his unique brand of compassion, love and entertainment.

Kamahl’s stellar career earned gold and platinum records and performances at the London Palladium and Carnegie Hall. He was one of the first acts to appear in concert at the Sydney Opera House.

For Steppin' Out we head to Melbourne to hear from Geraldine Butler - a volunteer at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. Australia's largest human rights organisation, it supports some 7,000 asylum seekers. Geraldine draws on her education background to share knowledge as well as using the ‘gift of the gab’ to help raise donations to provide support, education and the all important foodbank.

Our Money Extra segment, brought to you by lawyer and retirement specialist, Alice Mantel, features advice from Kathryn Greiner AO. As leader of the Inquiry which brought significant changes to the NSW Retirement Village Sector, Kathryn is well-placed to highlight issues faced by seniors looking to move to an independent living facility.

It’s a topic that many people find confusing, but Justin talks in simple terms about the money involved and where to get help. He also addresses wills and how they are impacted when people head into aged care homes. Then there’s the sticky issue of what happens if assets have been given away and how that can affect ability to pay for care.

Full Episode: Catching Up With Technology

Christine David from IT 4 Retirees speaks about the challenges and rewards of catching up with technology in our senior years.

The ‘digital divide’ cut deeply during COVID restrictions. The ‘haves’ were able to connect with loved ones on screens, shop online, check-in to venues on smartphones, and access digital medical services. The ‘have-nots’ endured more because of lack of digital connection, and for many them, that became a driver for giving technology a go.

However, getting started is not so easy for those without friends or family to teach the ins and outs of using devices. Fortunately, there are a growing number of services to help seniors get connected - both government and private - free and fee-paying. Local libraries are among the organisations that run computer classes.

We talk about those services in this episode, and links can be found on our website.

Guests in Jeff's Cafe this week include the esteemed Dr Kay Patterson AO, Australia's Age Discrimination Commissioner. She is joined by listeners Laurelin and Eloise to discuss the digital divide.

In Nostalgia Town, we meet Margret RoadKnight. Renowned for her powerful vocals and wide-ranging roots-based repertoire, Margret is a multi award winning singer-guitarist who has thrived for decades outside the mainstream music scene. She has sung blues, jazz, gospel, folk, comedy, and is known for social commentary through music.

In challenging financial times, how do you best manage and safeguard your investments? Financial coach Marc Bineham talks to us for Money Extra and promotes the advantages of diversifying.

For Steppin’ Out we head to NSW’s Sapphire Coast to chat with Liz Bellette-Stubbs - the presenter of Rural Chat on 2SEA-FM. When Liz moved to the far south coast five years ago, retirement was top of mind. But, when the catastrophic Black Summer bushfires hit in December 2019, her experience in mental health became a vital asset to assist members of a devastated and heart-broken community.

Full Episode: Choosing & Paying for Residential Aged Care

Visiting an aged care home, sampling the food, checking cleanliness, and observing whether the staff seem happy, are simple ways to judge whether a residential facility is good, bad, or somewhere in between.

That's the advice from regular guest, Craig Gear OAM, head of the Older Persons Advocacy Network. He elaborates on these tell-tale signs of quality as well as the online research you can do to help choose residential care. Craig also discusses help services that provide advice on financial and logistical aspects of this major life-upheaval. Discussion then turns to the difference between homes run ‘for profit’ versus the ‘not for profit’ sectors, and horror stories that emerge of sexual abuse and inadequate nutrition.

In Nostalgia Town, we meet Val Fell OAM - one of this country’s most remarkable seniors. At 93, she was the oldest person studying at an Australian university. Val has spent the best part of her life as a tireless campaigner for the rights of senior citizens and those suffering dementia.

On Money Extra, Tracy West PhD talks about elder financial abuse. Although an issue estimated to affect one in ten people over 65, it remains widely under-reported. One reason for that is because abuse is most often perpetrated by an adult family member.

Our guest for Steppin’ Out is Garry Havrillay from 3BBR in West Gippsland, Victoria. Garry talks about his love of “music of the world” aired on his show Continental Drift. Featuring new releases, and distributed around the country via the Community Radio Network, you can stream Continental Drift online here -https://3bbrfm.org.au/programs/continental-drift/

Garry also talks about his cutting-edge work as a music producer and composer.

Women's Health Across the Generations

With Women’s Health Week coming up on 5 September, we take a timely look at fascinating longitudinal research that tracks the health of women from their 40s through to their 70s.

University of Newcastle’s Emeritus Professor Julie Byles AO spent some 30 years studying women at the leading edge of the Baby Boomer generation, as well as women of their mothers’ generation.

The recently released study - Health & Wellbeing for Women born 1946-1951 - surveyed 12,432 women. It reveals, says Byles, that the current cohort of 70-year-olds are holding up well compared to their predecessors. They have benefitted from better information, a reduction in smoker numbers and more exercise. But the professor is less optimistic about some future septuagenarians citing increased health risks from more being overweight.

The research was conducted by the Centre for Women’s Health Research, University of Newcastle.

Our Money Extra topic covers what you might do with the extra cash should you be lucky enough to have received an inheritance. Alice Mantel says to consider paying a sum into your Superannuation.

In Nostalgia Town we catch up with a much-loved Aussie icon – Carlotta - Carol Spencer AM. Carlotta was a trailblazer in the transgender community as a cabaret performer and TV star.

She started her fabulous career in 1963 with the famous Les Girls cabaret show at Kings Cross in Sydney and compered and performed in the drag show for 26 years. International stars flocked to see Carlotta & Les Girls, among them, the likes of Frank Sinatra, Liza Minelli, Shirley Bassey, Sammy Davis Junior and our own Peter Allen.

In Steppin’ Out, we head to Stanthorpe on Queensland’s Granite Belt to meet TEN FM presenter Ben White. He describes a vibrant local music scene and the many charms that drew him and his wife Cath to retirement in this old tin town.
