Pathways by Grenadian STEAM
Brought to you by Grenadian STEAM, this is a podcast chronicling the journeys of West Indian professionals navigating careers in STEAM, both at home and in the diaspora. By taking a deep dive through the individual journeys of these profesionals - discussing their failures, their successes and their moments of learning - we hope to expose interested listeners to the depth and wonder that is a career in STEAM. It is also our goal to make such conversations accessible to the larger community of students and rising professionals in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
Choosing a Career - with the GrenSTEAM Directors

You asked and we delivered! This episode is all about Choosing a Career. We got some questions from our student audience and put the directors of Grenadian STEAM in the hot seat to try answering them. We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway!

Money Moves: Finance, Investing & Personal Empowerment - with Kristina "Krissy Commerce" Charles

Managing your finances and building wealth is something "they never taught us in school". Well, we're gonna talk about it here! This episode is a bit different than most, in that we aren't focusing on our guest's 'career', but instead talking about how she taught herself about investing and developed it into a side hustle. This is your reminder that STEAM isn't just about school subjects and academic pursuits - it's about holistic development and empowering our youth and society to shape their own future, and finances is a great place to start!

Kristina Charles is a 28 year old "corporate girl" who seeks to document her journey to financial independence through her 9-5 and education. She enjoys social media discussions on 9-5, mindset, side hustling, investing and altogether living a free life. Having grown up in Grenada in the Caribbean, she seeks to be an example and talk about all the taboo financial topics among young, aspiring adults.

We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway!

Food Ecosystems, Industrial Ecology & Interdisciplinary Knowledge - with Dr. Weslynne Ashton

This episode dives into understanding how businesses and industries develop and die out in certain regions in a very evolutionary manner. Dr. Ashton talks with Arlene about what we can learn from these natural changes and how we can use the information to create more sustainable business structures.
We also hear how Dr. Ashton's career developed organically, both due to her interests and to simply going through the doors that opened along the way.

Dr. Weslynne Ashton is an Associate Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology with joint appointments at the Stuart School of Business and the Institute of Design. She also holds a faculty affiliate (courtesy) appointment in the Armour College of Engineering, Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering.

Dr. Ashton is a sustainable systems scientist, whose research, teaching and practice are oriented around transitioning our socio-ecological systems towards sustainability and equity. She studies the adoption of socially and environmentally responsible strategies in business, and the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in addressing social and environmental challenges. Her research is grounded in industrial ecology and the circular economy. Her current work focuses on increasing sustainability and equity in urban food systems, and developing regenerative economies in post-industrial regions, newly industrializing countries and small island states.

She was awarded a Jefferson Science Fellowship by the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in 2018. She spent the 2018-2019 academic year as a science-policy advisor at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), where she worked with the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia on strategic planning, energy policy and energy efficiency programs in the Balkans and Ukraine.

We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway!

Remote Work and the Web3.0 Era - with Kareem P. Jackson

Today, Kareem and Arlene chat about the experiences he had navigating life, more or less blindly, as an international student before discovering the world of remote work and diving in. They also share thoughts on Blockchain, NFTs and the Web3.0 revolution.

Kareem P. Jackson is a realist, a stoic, a global citizen. A problem solver, product engineer and minimalist. An overthinker and overachiever. A Blockchain enthusiast. A curious mind, an adventurer and … we’re still on the fence about whether or not he’s human.

His experiences and interests so far in life have led him to founding Unpluggd Media Group - an outlet for his passions and curiosities, a platform to share, communicate and build with the world. Kareem believes in living to learn and sharing to grow, so through the technology vertical of UMG - Unpluggd Digital - he develops the products that serve those roles.

Students Speak

Today’s episode is going to be a little different than most. It’s our season finale, and if you’ve been following Pathways from the start, you know we like to mix it up a bit in the finale.

This time around, we’re switching the focus - we’ve been talking to the professionals, getting their reflections and advice to young students. Well today, we’re going straight to the students. What’s life like as a Gen-Z student right now, pandemic and all? What are their hopes and dreams for the future? And what do they think older generations get wrong about them? We’re getting into all of it - straight from the horse’s mouth. So take a listen, and get into the conversation too! Leave a comment on our social media posts - which student revelation was most surprising to you? Or if you’re a student, which parts do you resonate with?

We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway!

Kisheon Alexander - Production Engineer in Chemical Plant Engineering

Growing up in La Poterie, St. Andrew’s, Grenadian-born Kisheon Alexander attended “infant” (as it is most well-known) at St. Raphael’s Nursery before moving on to the Sacred Heart Primary School, formerly known as Tivoli R. C. School. He attended the St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) where he played as much cricket and football as he wanted while also gaining leadership exposure through debate club, scouts, young leaders, being house captain and many other extra-curricular activities alongside receiving a quality education.

At the T.A. Marryshow Community College, Kisheon studied his favourite subject, Physics, as well as Chemistry and Math, which he believes he took on primarily for the challenge. He went on to teach Chemistry and Math at the Grenville Secondary School for two years before migrating to the US to attend the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. There he received his Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering before pursuing graduate studies at the West Virginia University, where he had the privilege to complete research in bio-based engineering applications, as well as polymer characterization and processing. Kisheon now works as a Production Engineer in heavy chemical manufacturing plant operations.

Considering himself mostly a homebody, he spends a lot of time with family, and now watches a lot more football than he plays! Kisheon loves sampling native cuisines and is always searching for a new favourite Caribbean spot. He tries to mimic exotic dishes at home and has really come to enjoy cooking. Kisheon dreams of one day owning a restaurant, but for the meantime his focus is on executing as much as he can at work while learning the business unit operations and developing his people skills.

In this episode, Kisheon and I talk about balancing recreation and education in your younger years, the impact of developing mentor relationships while in school and knowing when to step away from a situation and try something new vs sticking to it.

We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway!

Dr. Kenrith Carter - Veterinary Surgeon, Wildlife Vet and Conservationist

Dr. Kenrith Carter is a Grenadian veterinary surgeon with additional qualifications in exotic animal medicine and surgery. He has been operating a mobile veterinary practice, Dr CarterVet, since 2015 in Grenada where he treats everything from dogs & cats to horses, livestock, exotics & wildlife (monkeys, parrots, sea turtles and even lemurs). His practice offers a wide range of veterinary procedures including ultrasounds, surgeries and blood testing, while carrying a wide selection of medication that animals may need.

Carter’s initial intention was to put a local face to veterinary medicine in Grenada and to bring comprehensive animal care and medical guidance to everyone in the Tri-Island state. After realising the need for improvements in the livestock industry, he gained additional qualifications in genetics and animal breeding with a goal of making a positive impact on this industry and the livelihoods of small scale farmers around Grenada.

Kenrith has worked internationally as a wildlife vet, recently completing a contract with the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Somaliland, Africa. Always intrigued by birds, he’s also an avid birder. He is currently the top ebird birder for Grenada with the highest number of species and lists documented, both on his own and as part of the 3KCBirding Group. Dr. Carter strongly believes in conservation, and since 2018 has been volunteering as the sea turtle veterinarian for a local Non-Governmental Organization, Ocean Spirits Inc. More recently, he’s been heavily involved in seabird nesting and biodiversity research with Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC), documenting resident and migratory birds.

In an effort to showcase the life of a Grenadian Vet on the island, Kenrith recently launched a youtube channel where he posts day-to-day experiences, educational videos and tutorials. Check it out at DrCarterVet!

In this episode, Kenrith and I talk about everything from delivering a kid from its goat mother after 3 days in labour, to traveling up the islands on Richard Branson's super yacht.

Marcus Andall - Intuitive Coach & Yoga Instructor, Plant-Based Chef, Entrepreneur

Marcus Andall has always had a passion for natural healing and remedies provided by Mother Nature, which guided him to start using plant-based cooking, herbal teas, and yoga as tools.

Growing up in his homeland, Grenada, The Isle of Spice, Marcus learned how to utilize the fruits of Mother Nature to heal. He has learned to use locally grown herbs, spices, and wild bush to treat a variety of illnesses. However, only through the implementation of these remedies in his daily life was he able to truly understand how powerful they are and their effects on the human body.

Marcus’ journey of self-healing led him to become a coach and he now happily shares his experiences and knowledge to facilitate the healing of others as a Coach and plant-based chef through his company, Grenada I.T.A.L.

Grenada I.T.A.L is an all natural brand geared toward delivering Internal Therapy Alignment and Love, with the use of plant-based foods and herbal teas in conjunction with Yoga. This combination will facilitate the healing of one's Mind, Body & Soul, resulting in realigning to a state of oneness.

Observing the world that we live in, the instability, imbalance, lack of love and compassion, makes Marcus’ work more relevant than ever. The dis-ease & ailments that are so rampant now, can be healed. Marcus, and Grenada I.T.A.L, is here to support you on your path to improved health and wellness.

In this episode, I chat with Marcus about challenging the status quo, the importance of meditation and holistic alignment and of course, the state of the agricultural sector in Grenada.

Over the years and between degrees, Zanifa has managed to rack up a range of job experiences just about as overwhelming as her academic resume. She has worked as a pricing analyst, an actuary, a construction project manager, a draftsperson and a high school teacher in addition to all the hats she currently wears at SGU.

In this episode, I talk with Zanifa about the importance of pursuing and achieving higher education, finding your 'people' and providing support for those after you when at university abroad and finding a way to push through, even when in doubt.

We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway!

Diasha Ross - Mixologist and Sommelier

Diasha Ross, or just “Ross” as he is known to many, is a local mixologist and sommelier. Starting out as a waiter at what was then the LaSource Resort, Diasha worked his way up and became the sommelier of the restaurant, working with the chefs to craft perfect wine pairings for their nightly menus. Some time after, he had the opportunity to join a cruise ship crew and left Grenada, traveling the world first as a bartender, then rising to the level of head mixologist on the Norwegian Cruise Line.

Upon returning home after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Diasha met the Hamid sisters - owners of the new Wild Orchid Restaurant and Bar at the Annandale Waterfall and Forest Park - and joined the team as head mixologist at the bar.

In this episode, Diasha and I talk a lot about wines and spirits, developing a career by working hard at something new, and about a life of learning on board a cruise ship.

Magdalena Fielden - Hotelier, Marketing Director, Trained Architect

Mexican born and trained as an architect, Magdalena moved to the Caribbean after meeting her British husband Russ Fielden while sailing. Together, they worked for over 25 years around the Caribbean, setting up hotels, marinas, restaurants and retail outlets. In 1998 the couple decided to settle down in Grenada with their young family and bought what was then a 7-cottage bankrupt inn, which they completely revamped and today call it the True Blue Bay Boutique Resort. Magdalena and her family personally have run, designed and developed the inn into a 70-room resort, with a restaurant, marina, dive center, spa, yoga studio and bakery. The resort is one of the leading environmentally sustainable resorts in the Caribbean and has always sought to involve the local community in their operations.

This is how Magdalena discovered Grenada chocolate and cocoa. The story of the late Mott Green, founder of the Grenada Chocolate Company (first factory in the island) was definitely an inspiration to continue his legacy. The idea of creating a community-oriented, sustainable chocolate festival came to her in 2013 and it was launched with only a few participants but all locally inspired activities involving the real people behind a tree-to-bar chocolate.

In 2021 the island will celebrate the 8th annual Grenada Chocolate Fest from May 7th to 12th . The GCF has been an essential part of the development of the Cocoa and Chocolate Industry in Grenada, where the Island now has 6 tree-to-bar chocolate producers, from only 2 in 2013. Magdalena’s day job is the Marketing Director of the resort but she also serves as the Honorary Consul of Mexico for Grenada and owns the very popular House of Chocolate Museum-Cafe in St Georges, Grenada’s capital city.

Magdalena and I talk about so many things in this episode! From building a business and a brand, to finding inspiration, right down to the origin and current state of the fine chocolate and cocoa industries in Grenada.

We hope you enjoy the journey on today's Pathway!

Careem Gilbert - Entrepreneur, Tech-Savvy Photographer, Creative Developer

Careem Gilbert is a multidisciplinary creative and businessman specializing in colour, creative photography & commercial video production, as well as e-commerce web development for some of the most ambitious entrepreneurs and companies. His company, CG Creative, aims at tying businesses, artists and entrepreneurs to their audience.  He has extensive experience in aspects of business startups, travel, fashion, music video, food, commercial production and more.  He is known for his hands on approach, storytelling, dynamic handheld movements, and distinct colour choices. He found his passion for creating his identity and entrepreneurship during his secondary school life at the age of 14, realizing life is 'not all about good grades'. With aspirations stemming from the impact on the world made by the likes of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, Careem had set out to create a life full of purpose, selflessness and dedication to creating value for others.

Careem began honing his problem-solving skills at a young age and right out of secondary school, during his tenure at Community College where he was pursuing his first degree in Information Technology, he took his free time to build a software platform that was years ahead of his class curriculum in collaboration with a friend, Rendell Pierre. Taking many nights and weekends of research, trials and execution, the two were able to build an e-commerce platform with no prior knowledge in the field, capable of performing online transactions and product uploads with scalability comparable to that of eBay and Amazon.com in 2013. This blew their mind. This project proved this quote to be true: “Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it - you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use”. This belief broke mental barriers and led the youth to founding more businesses along the way, designed to serve others.

In this episode, Careem and I talk about realizing potential, manifesting the life you want and building a business of passion.

The Real Deal - Part 2 - An open conversation with Raman Walwyn-Venugopal, Latocha Terrelonge and Dr. Drexler James

"Take time to absorb information. Remain skeptical and think critically about yourself and what you want to do" - Raman Walwyn-Venugopal

Here it is! Part 2 of the Season One Finale of Pathways! In this wrap-up episode we talk about what we've learned so far in the world of work after College. What haven't the adults been telling us about life out here?! We get a little deeper and discuss our feelings of obligation (or lack thereof) to our home countries and reflect on lessons we've learned over the years. This is the REAL DEAL.

University majors we took:

  • Raman - Double-B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering & Computer Science, pursuing M.Sc. in Computer Science
  • Latocha - B.Sc. in Engineering Management with a specialization in Biomedical Engineering
  • Drexler - B.Sc. in Psychology, M.A. in Social & Personality Psychology, Ph.D. in Social & Personality Psychology
  • Arlene - B.Arch Architecture with a minor in Construction Management

Other notes:

  • In this episode, Drexler mentions his US visa status and how that has affected so much about school, work and life in the US. Be sure to check out our upcoming blog post about navigating the US education and job system as an international student at www.grensteam.org.
  • An important note when deciding on a college major (if you will be studying and hoping to work in the US) is that certain industries are not favourable to international students, as many employers may require national security clearance for their workers, which cannot be attained unless you are a US citizen. Biomedical Engineering and Aerospace are notorious ones, as Latocha learned while job searching.

Shennel Telesford - Mathematics Graduate, Aspiring Actuarial Scientist

Shennel Telesford is currently a teaching assistant in the area of algebra at the National University of the South (Universidad Nacional del Sur) in Bahía Blanca, Argentina,  where she also attained her Bachelors degree in Research Mathematics. Her love for mathematics started off as an incentive from her mom in primary school and grew more and more, making it an effortless subject for her during secondary school, before she finally realized a couple years later that it was a passion.  During her studies, she was exposed to many areas of mathematics (yes, math isn't just numbers).  A great part of this exposure was as a result of the annual math congress by the Argentina Mathematical Union (UMA) . Shennel has attended 6 congresses in total and they served as an excellent tool for a future glimpse into many mathematical areas of study. Algebra and statistics have always been her preference. Currently, she is pursuing a formation in the area of economics as a stepping stone into Actuarial Science.

On this Pathway, we talk about realizing passions and making continuous academic decisions to chart a career. We also talk about learning a new language and the benefits of integrating into a new culture in tandem with pursuit of a formal education.

Julien Mitchell - Architect, Photographer, "Kreative" Polymath

Julien Mitchell is a self-defined polymath, practicing architecture, photography and numerous other creative and entrepreneurial pursuits. After leaving Grenada to pursue architecture in the late 90’s, Julien returned in 2016 to design and construct the Lavo Lanes Bowling Alley in Calliste, St. George, which eventually led him to a series of residential design-build projects on the island. His goal in Grenada and in many other developing countries is “to give the man who has $200k, or $300k a home that looks exactly, or thereabout, like that of the man who spends $2 million on his house”. Julien is a part of the New York-based design studio Freeform+Deform, practicing across NYC, Miami, Texas, Jamaica, Nigeria, Ghana and Tanzania, to name a few. In Grenada, he operates under the brand of JSM Architecture.

On this Pathway, we discuss Julien’s contentious relationship with school as a young student, his unorthodox entry into the working world of architecture and the goal-driven accomplishments he has had thus far in his career. We talk about the current state of architecture and construction in Grenada, and future plans in-sight for Julien.

Andrew "Hitz" Phillip - Music Producer, Sound Engineer, Song Writer and more...

Andrew “Hitz” Phillip is a Grenadian music producer and sound engineer, entertainer, songwriter and entrepreneur. Born December 6th 1986, in St. George’s, Hitz showed great promise in the musical arts from a very young age and was quite unaware of where this love for music would take him. Using the Double Tenor Steel Pan as his main instrument of choice, Hitz engaged his musical journey in late 1995. Continuing his growth throughout the years, he then, in 2007, moved to Trinidad and Tobago.

From November 2007 to February 2012, ‘Hitz’ worked as a member of the esteemed Roy Cape All Stars, while simultaneously building his songwriting and production career at the Champion Sound Studios in St. Ann’s, Port of Spain. This studio was owned and operated by his Mentor: Martin ‘Mice’ Raymond.

From then to now, Hitz has developed both his songwriting and production techniques. With these and his vocal ability to boot, he has amassed a catalog of music that includes hits like 2010’s ‘Tanti Woi’ performed by Blaxx, Machel Montano’s ‘Witch Doctor', Kerwin Du Bois’ 'Press Ah Button' & Iwer George’s ‘Come to Meh’, to name a few.

All this growth now allows Hitz to embark on a new journey, taking himself into the spotlight as he performs his own vocals on songs like his 2016 single ‘Can’t Let You Get Away’, 2017’s ‘Show Them’ feat. Valene Nedd (which earned a spot in Grenada’s National Soca Monarch Finals of that year) and his present single “We Ain’t Going Nowhere” a song created to illustrate the heart of true fetters & Masqueraders everywhere.

In this inaugural episode of Pathways, I chat with Hitz about his journey getting into the music industry, following passion, and learning from hard lessons along the way.
