Murder In The Rain

With a mutual fascination for true crime, Emily and Alisha have taken it upon themselves to explore the depravity that holds a special place in the Pacific Northwest. Murder in the Rain examines the brutality, history, and humanity of these notorious murders. With the help of authors, psychologists, detectives, victim's families, and their producer Josh, Murder in the Rain brings an understanding as to who the victims were while investigating the killer's origins and motives. Green River Killer Part 1: Victims of Opportunity

Part 1: "Victims of Opportunity"

In the early 1980s, a terrifying pattern started to emerge; young women and girls disappearing from the Seattle-Tacoma area. It would take a little over two years for most people to realize the severity of the pattern. When multiple bodies of strangled females were discovered in the Green River and surrounding forests, the media put the population on high alert, there was a prolific serial killer here in the Pacific Northwest. This week on Murder in the Rain, we revisit the case of the Green River Killer in preparation for next week’s discussion with Nic Edwards, one half of the dynamic duo who hosts the popular podcast True Crime Garage.

Yakama MMIW: The Murdered, Unsolved

In today’s episode, we’ll discuss some of the confirmed murders from Yakama Nation. As you can imagine the list is far too long, so this episode will be solely focused on the unsolved murders. In future episodes, we’ll discuss the solved murders and the remaining cases that are far too robust and require their own episode.

The Running Men

When people commit crimes, they often make headlines for going on the lam, doing anything they can to avoid capture and punishment. In today’s episode, Josh is telling three stories of runaway criminals. One who was possibly innocent, yet disappeared and lived under another name for decades. Another is a shady pilot with more than one wife. The third is a man who disappeared in a river when he just so happened to be a few days from going on trial. These three men may have tried to outrun their problems, but their stories are no longer unsolved mysteries.

Yakama MMIW: Mysterious Deaths

In a recent Murder in the Rain episode, we discussed the missing women of the Yakama Nation in Washington. The huge reservation is home to rivers, wilderness and an uncountable number of dark corners for people to go missing from. This week, we will be sharing the mysterious deaths that have taken place in the same area; all women from the Yakama area who died in ways that either can’t be explained or appear to be possible homicides. As always, we ask that if you know anything about these cases- even the smallest detail- that you contact the local police agency. We’ve been told by another unsolved case that every time their story is shared publicly, they have received some sort of new tip and they are all helpful. So, if you know something, don’t hesitate! These are the mysterious deaths from the Yakama Reservation.

An Enduring Mystery

The Martin Family loaded into their cream-and-red station wagon for a trip up the highway on December 7, 1958. The family was on the hunt for a Christmas tree and greens to make wreaths. From Portland, they drove east into the Columbia River Gorge. Parents Ken(54) and Barbara(48, I know) were in the front, with Ken driving, and their daughters Suzie, Virginia, and Barbie were in the back.

As night fell on the Martins' block, a few neighbors noticed the family hadn't returned. The station wagon wasn't parked under the carport, and the lights inside the home were out. No one was home, and they would never be home again. Five members of the Martin family vanished that day, most of them without a trace.

A Dynamic Fight

In today’s episode, we’re going to explore the unsolved murder of Linda Malcom, a Navy veteran whose body was found engulfed in flames in her Port Orchard, Washington home. Despite multiple leads, the case is still unsolved, but with the help of the right people, it might not stay that way for long. With us today are Jennifer Bucholtz and George Jared who are part of a Cold Case Investigative Team through the American Military University. Jennifer is former US Army Counterintelligence, an instructor in criminal justice and forensic science and works as an investigator for the El Paso County Sheriff's Department. So we invited them to the show to talk a little bit about how they handle cold cases, and what makes Linda’s case so unique, and solvable.

Field Stripped

In August of 1997, the quaint little city of Selah, Washington, was shocked to learn that one of their own, Carolyn Clift, was found dead inside her own residence, the victim of a particularly brutal stabbing. Despite multiple eyewitnesses who had heard a disturbance and even glimpsed a potential suspect fleeing the scene, the investigation languished into a cold case. However, a breakthrough occurred providing crucial information that would ultimately crack the case wide open.

The Order Part 2

Part 2: “The Names of the Dead

The Order was a gang of white supremacists turned domestic terrorists. Based out of Washington, headed by extremist Robert Mathews and fueled by hate, The Order carried off a series of bank and armored transport robberies in an effort to fund a race war and the eventual overthrow of the government. In the midst of their crimes, they carried out an assassination- that of controversial Denver talk radio host Alan Berg, who was executed in his driveway. On the run after a shootout with the FBI at a Portland, Oregon motel, Mathews and his followers had regrouped at the secluded homes they'd rented at Smuggler's Cove on Whidbey Island, in Puget Sound. On the morning of Friday, December 7, the gang's three safe houses were quietly surrounded by the FBI. Lights and movement could be seen inside as agents prepared to engage with their targets. When they moved in, Mathews opened fire, and a standoff ensued.

The Order Part 1

Part 1: “The Last Angry Man”

It started with a sick dream of a violent revolution and a race war. Robert Mathews blamed Jewish people for all of the ills of the world. He wanted to see them annihilated, so he formed a group, culled from other extremist assemblies, and called it The Order. Their aim was to fund the overthrow of the government through counterfeiting and the armed robberies of banks and armored transport vehicles. With success, their brazenness escalated, and they decided to make a statement, with the assassination of a prominent radio host, shot at close range with a silenced submachine gun. Intended as a mission statement to the world, the group was too short-sighted to recognize it was the impetus of their downfall. This is The Order, part 1 of 2: The Last Angry Man.

Path Of Pratt Part 3

Part 3: "Tread"

For the last two weeks, I’ve been telling you about the path of Jesse Clarence Pratt. In part one, I talked about his violent history toward partners and their children. In part two, I told you about Carrie Lynn Love; the young woman who began working with Jesse and was fatefully chosen to ride with him out of the state. Her body was recovered in a pile of gravel at a secluded truck stop after her personal items were found off the highway. Jesse was quickly connected to Carrie and arrested for her murder. Today, I’ll be closing out his story by walking you through the trials that took place in an effort to keep him out of society. As graphic as all of these episodes have already been, listener discretion is advised as I will be discussing the torture Carrie contended with, the details it’s claimed Jesse spoke of and his sexual kinks that may have been connected to the murder weapon. This is part three of the Path of Pratt.

Path Of Pratt Part 2

Part 2: "Spider"

Last week I took you down the path of harm and destruction left behind by Jesse Clarence Pratt. How his partners, Linda, Cheryl, and Nancy, and their children all became victims of his violent temper and his hands. I told you about the kidnapping and rape of Teresa and how Jesse could be the party responsible for the disappearance of Virginia Rambus, and that he was the last person seen with the woman whose body was found in a gravel pile at a rest stop in Oregon- Carrie Love.

This week, in part two of three, I’ll be telling you about Carrie and how good detective work paired with strong forensics led to Jesse’s arrest.

Path of Pratt Part 1

Part 1: "The Candyman"

Virginia Anne Rambus was only 19 years old when she left her apartment to walk across the complex to meet up with a friend. She started the walk, but never arrived. Her case remains unsolved, but a man of particular interest was living in the same complex at the same time. To those he provided drugs to, he was known as the Candy Man. Police in Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California however knew him as Jesse Clarence Pratt. And if he had remained in prison for the crime he committed in 1980, Virginia might still be with us as would another murder victim. Today, in part one of two, I’ll be telling you about Jesse Pratt’s path of destruction, the many wives, partners, children, and sex workers he left bloodied and abused, the women he may have had a hand in killing, and the teenage victim that earned him the title of “Oldest inmate in an Oregon Penitentiary”, Carrie Love.

The Prowler Part 2

Part 2: "The Fly"

In part one of The Prowler, I told you about the murders of Mary Anne Pohlreich, Carol Beethe, and Randi Levine. Mary Anne was raped and killed in an unknown location, her body left posed after death. Carol and Randi were blitzed in their beds as they slept, beaten, raped, and mutilated. In part two, I'll tell you about the murderer of these women. A sinister man who began life as a lonely, unwanted child who would grow to become the first person ever tried for serial murder in King County, Washington.

The Prowler Part 1

Part 1: "Extreme Personal Rage"

In the Summer of 1990, three women fell into the crosshairs of a dangerous man. They were regulars among Bellevue, Washington's vibrant, hard-partying nightlife, and they were murdered- their broken bodies violated and posed after death. Their killer's method linked them as a series, whose recurrences were growing nearer and nearer, but he'd left few clues aside from his violence. This is The Prowler, part one of two.

The Ringleader

November 13th, 2016 was not dissimilar from any other day for the Grunwald family in Palmer, Alaska, that was until their worst fears were realized when their beloved son didn’t arrive home by curfew. The search for 16-year-old David led investigators to the discovery of his burned vehicle. As they continued their search for him, they uncovered the horrifying events that unfolded the last night anyone saw him.

Shane Is Missing

Today’s episode is unlike any other I’ve done. In the past, I’ve done special episodes regarding active missing persons- but they are usually only about 15 minutes long, sharing the known information in hopes of helping the family. In today’s case, one member of the family reached out to me. The other side of the family isn’t speaking to that person. And the family drama has only added to the chaos surrounding the disappearance of Shane Barton. Today, I’ll be sharing the audio interview I conducted with Shane’s daughters, and the emailed responses from Racheal, his wife. Hopefully, with all the available information presented together, someone will come forward with information about Shane’s location.

The Shape of a Man

On a rainy night in September of 1946, Cora Rogers was going about her end-of-day duties. She worked alone, running a market and gas station in rural Greenleaf, Oregon. The lights went out inside much earlier than usual, and a curious neighbor walked over to check on Cora, but she did not answer. The neighbor returned home, figuring she had closed up early and gone to bed. She'd been killed at night and lay undiscovered until the following morning. Though police had the statements of many witnesses from the night of the murder, and a description of the likely killer was broadcast and printed in newspapers, the man simply walked away from the crime along a rural strip of highway blacktop. He has never been identified and the murder in Greenleaf remains unsolved.

The Address Book

In 1998, when the body of a young girl washed up on the shore of the Columbia River in Warrenton, Oregon, it was easy to assume she was another vulnerable person drawn to the Astoria-Megler bridge to end her own life. But her body would tell another story. Authorities had to work quickly to identify her, her killer, and his motive. During the investigation a secret life was uncovered, one that abused and exploited children for years. In today’s case, we’ll discuss the murder of Heather Fraser and the monster who took her life and negatively impacted dozens of others.

Little Part 2

Little Part 2: “She Rode Alone”

Last week, I told you the story of the Cowden Family and how Richard, Belinda, David, and Melissa seemed to have vanished while camping near Carberry Creek Road over the Labor Day weekend of 1974. Over 7 months later, their skeletal remains were discovered- Belinda and the children in a cave- Richard, tied to a tree. With very little to go on, police began looking into local men who would have, not only known the area well but could have been capable of such a monstrous act. It was when they read Dwain Lee Little’s name on the list of recently paroled prisoners the hair on their neck stood up and they felt they might have found the first person of interest. Today, I’ll be telling you about the crimes Dwain committed that landed him in prison, how he came to be released so early, and the harm he was able to commit as a free man. Was he the killer of the Cowden family? Only Dwain and the Cowdens know.

Little Part 1

A turn of luck had led the Cowden family to the Carberry Creek area for a last-minute camping trip. The young family of four were delighted to have the time to indulge in the stunning nature Jackson County offered them. They didn’t have big plans; they were just excited to have time with their two young children to fish and to swim. The cherry on top was the plan of wrapping up the weekend with a dinner at Mrs. Cowden’s mother’s home. For unknown reasons, the family never showed up for that meal. Now, 50 years later, their case remains mostly unsolved, although an early parolee has always held the most suspicion as being the person responsible for what happened to the young family. Today, I’ll be telling you the story of The Cowden family: Richard, Belinda, David and Melissa, and how Dwain Lee Little may be their killer.

The Infernal Machine

For millennia, we've heard of Pandora's box and the dangers held within. For Fern Bowden, a warning to stay away wasn't enough to keep her from opening the strange container her husband kept in the basement. With the lift of a lid and the blink of an eye, lives would literally and figuratively be blown apart. Today I'll be talking about Portland's Pandora's Box murder- and how a man's paranoia drove him to build an infernal machine.

Strange and Unusual

Investigators worked outward from the location of the missing woman’s abandoned car, scouring a trail of digital footage. Her last known sighting was captured on a neighbor's home surveillance video. It shows Kassanndra driving off early on the morning she dropped out of contact. She was newly pregnant and scheduled that day for her first ultrasound appointment, which she missed. It was so out of character, her mother contacted the police and a search began. In a stroke of good fortune, a mass transit train line ran along the street where the car was found, and its dashcam captured a brief glimpse of a person walking from the vehicle. They wore black clothing, a brimmed hat, and blue latex gloves.

Crossed Paths

In 1978 Oregon saw an uptick of crimes against children and panic swelled to an all-time high when two girls went missing within weeks of each other. Our first case today revolves around the disappearance of 12-year-old Ann Marie Ellinwood who went missing during a March of Dimes Walk-a-thon in Corvallis. The second involves 11-year-old Stephanie Ann Newsom, who vanished while delivering newspaper advertisements near her home in Salem. Both girls were last seen walking on local paths and, in both cases, witnesses claimed to have seen them with a similar man.

A few months ago, Emily shared the stories of Tiffany and Danielle, survivors of the Jogger Rapist, Richard Gilmore, who has since been released to a halfway home in downtown Portland. We, along with so many of you listeners were rightfully outraged. We’ve yet to hear from newly crowned Gov. Tina Kotek whether she plans to change his low-level status. Sadly, a case like his, where the judicial system signs a piece of paper that releases someone that could put the public at risk happens daily. And in the case of Russell Obremski, it happened twice. In today’s episode, I’ll be sharing the case of Russell Obremski, LaVerna Lowe, Betty Ritchie, and the systemic failures that added to Russel’s list of victims.

Hurt

CW - Animal Abuse

He arrived in Corvallis, Oregon during the Autumn of 1902. His name was Franz Edmund Creffield. Slight and blonde-haired, he spoke with a noticeable German-slash-Swedish-ish accent, was born outside of Dusseldorf near a city named Crefeld (now Krefeld), he'd briefly studied to become a priest, and emigrated to the U.S. in the late 1890s. He had a great big bushy beard, so as to look more authentically prophetic, I suppose. He was described as hypnotic. That is just about all that is known of Franz, who came to believe he was Jesus Christ reborn.

Patreon Exclusive Sneak Peek: Deduce Episode 1

We want to thank everyone who came out to our live show in Portland, Oregon on June 24th! We admit it, we're a little bit tired after all of the live show excitement, so we wanted to change things up and share a Patreon exclusive episode with you today.

Almost exactly 26 years ago, a show premiered on Fox that asked viewers to test the limits of their imaginations. Originally hosted by James Brolin on May 25, 1997, the reigns were then passed to Jonathan Frakes for the next three seasons. With his dramatic delivery of cheesy lines and the most Canadian-looking production, the cult classic Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction found its way into our hearts and most frighteningly, our minds.

We hope you enjoy a sneak peek at our new Patreon exclusive series called Deduce! If you like the Deduce series, join us on Patreon for $5 per month or more to get episode 2 on Thursday.

Mud & Blood

Today, we delve into the tragic case of Jenise Wright, a young girl whose disappearance shook her community and captured the attention of the nation. Jenise was just 6 years old when she vanished from her home in Bremerton, Washington, on August 2, 2014. Her disappearance sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community, as friends, family, and neighbors rallied together in a desperate search for the little girl. Thanks to the prioritization of the investigation and DNA testing, the case was solved quickly. Later in the episode, we hear from one of the detectives that worked on Jenise’s case, Lindsey Wade who recently released a new book In My DNA: My Career Investigating Your Worst Nightmare.

Lindsey Wade Bio

Lindsey served as a Tacoma Police Officer for twenty-one years. She has an impressive track record of utilizing her keen investigative instincts to solve violent crimes. During her fourteen years as a detective, she investigated sexual assaults, child abuse, missing persons, and homicides. In 2010, Lindsey first became aware of the issue known today as Lawfully Owed DNA when she discovered that serial killer Ted Bundy was not in CODIS. She worked with authorities in Florida to track down a sample of Bundy’s DNA and it was finally entered into the national DNA database in 2011. In 2012, Lindsey’s work on collecting DNA from convicted sexual predators in Washington state who’d slipped through the cracks, led to an arrest in the 1980 homicide of a teenage girl. In 2018, Lindsey, along with Tacoma Police Detectives and the FBI, solved two 32-year-old cold case child homicides thanks to advances in DNA technology, Forensic Genetic Genealogy, and good old-fashioned police work. Lindsey retired in 2018 as the Tacoma Police Department’s cold case detective.

Giving Up Is Too Boring

The month of May is full of reminders of the feminine energy surrounding us. Mother Earth shares her beauty with rays of sunshine and blossoming flowers. Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday of the month. And the woman I spoke with for today’s episode is reminded of the most gutting pain a mother can experience. The loss of a child. To honor her child and his unsolved death, I will be sharing the case of Sircharles Jones, a mother’s child who can no longer tell his own stories, so his mother did.

The Ghost Cabin

The three trappers were missing for months before their bodies were found in the water beneath a rough hole chopped into the ice of a remote lake. Killed in an ambush, their mutilated bodies wove a tale of furious violence: two had been shot execution-style, one was beaten to death with a hammer, and all three had been raked with shotgun blasts. Committed 99 years ago this past January, and though a likely culprit has been identified, these murders, unfortunately, remain officially unsolved. Today, I'll tell you about Oregon's Lava Lake Trapper Murders, one of the most infamous killings in the history of the Pacific Northwest.

Too Many Missed Opportunities

On July 4th 2007, a horrifying incident unfolded when a 12-year-old girl was abducted from outside her own home in Tacoma, WA. The relentless efforts of the police led them through a maze of leads, gradually narrowing down their search until they finally identified the prime suspect. As the realization sank in that yet another young girl in Tacoma went missing, the city was gripped with fear, worrying that she might be lost forever. However, the discovery of her remains brought no solace, it only brought more anguish as subsequent failures in the justice system came to light as the investigation went on. In today's episode, we delve into the heart-wrenching case of Zina Linnik and shed light on how the capture of her murderer ultimately led to the closure of multiple cases.

Runaway Train Part 2

Last week I introduced you to the first set of stories surrounding the cases involving children who were pictured in the 1993 Soul Asylum video for Runaway Train. Today, I’ll continue to tell those stories. As you’ll soon hear, the themes of cops not believing the families, a lack of information surrounding the cases and some of the cases remaining unsolved continues. So, if you’re from the area being talked about, please pay extra attention and share with others. Someone knows something.

Runaway Train Part 1

Thirty years ago, a music video hit airwaves that changed how videos could be used for good. Soul Asylum’s choice to use photos of missing children as the backdrop to their song “Runaway Train” did in fact bring children home; in some cases heroically, in some, against the children’s will. Sadly, some were returned home, only to be laid to rest and others yet remain lost. For the next three episodes, I’ll be talking about the individual cases behind those faces and what the outcome was…if there is one available.

The Bourbon and Ham Club

There have been many conversations of late discussing systemic issues in our world. While we've given many examples of current issues within the justice system, it is important to look back at the foundation of such a system to understand why it operates the way it does today.

For Portland, the corrupt history of the police bureau and local government is a story that isn't special to our city, though it does contain some uniquely Portland elements.

This is the story of Big Jim Elkins and how pinball machines, teamsters, gangsters, bootleggers, drug dealers, and gambling dens in every corner of the city helped form both its police and local government, one bribe at a time. You'll also learn about Portland's old-timey coven of corruption, The Bourbon and Ham Club.

The Northons Part 2: “The Perfect Story”

In last week’s episode, we explored the background of Christopher and Liysa Northon. If you haven’t listened go check it out because there will be spoilers! On October 9th, 2000, authorities found Chris dead inside his sleeping bag at the campsite he and Liysa had been staying at with their young son Dane. Later that day, Liysa sought out medical help for some minor injuries, telling nurses and police that they were caused due to a fight with her husband, who had been abusing her. She told her story to multiple law enforcement officers, and over time there were parts of her that were different or that people questioned. In this week’s episode, we’ll conclude the case of Liysa Northon and how her story, when compared to evidence, just didn’t add up. We'll also dive into some major bombshells in this case.

The Northons Part 1

Part 1: “Who’s the Monster?”

Liysa Northon never disputed the fact that she had killed her husband. Truth be told, she informed the police that she may have killed him. But the story that she would go on to tell, would change, like many of the stories told throughout her life. She was adamant she had to kill her husband, if she hadn’t, it would have been her or her son. When Lisya’s case was being prepared for court, it by no means drew notoriety across the country, but in the NW corner and in Hawaii, it became well-known and highly anticipated. People were intrigued and even moved by the fit, pretty, young woman who claimed to desperately fight for her life, and yet, many people stood behind the victim to point the blame at her. Once court was over and the case settled, many were left scratching their heads at the outcome. Soon, one of the most famous true crime writers in the world would discover Liysa’s case and pen her final chapter, and what she had to say showed Liysa in an entirely different light. Over the next two episodes of Murder in the Rain, I’ll share Liysa’s story and dig into why when picked apart, it didn’t quite line up with the evidence. So, was Liysa Northon married to a monster who terrorized her every day, or was she the monster?

Intentional Torture

The Portland metro area has always been the ‘quirky girl’ of American cities. We partake in anything usually deemed ‘weird’ or ‘out of the norm’, and we like it that way. However, that weirdness can often be perceived as a gateway to even more strange and, who knows, maybe even dangerous lifestyles. So, when a young mother in Gresham called 911 after being attacked, her life was dissected and detectives thought they may have uncovered the role the evil-doer played in her life. That role was of a pirate. Today, I’ll be telling you the story of Annastasia Hester of Gresham, Oregon, and how her killer was closer than detectives ever imagined.

Explosive Part 2

Part 2: "An Act of Sheer Madness"

Before 1970, anyone over the age of twelve could legally purchase dynamite in Oregon. Beginning in 1963 on the University of Oregon Campus and the surrounding area, many many bombs were detonated. Mostly aimed at military buildings off-campus and ROTC buildings, on campus, the bombings didn't slow until the law changed, and almost no one was ever charged significantly for the crimes.

In part two of Explosive, we’ll discuss the University of Oregon bombings and Odie's Steakhouse and Bronco Room, in the tiny town of Elgin, Oregon, which exploded in 1986, killing one man and sending another fleeing from justice for over a decade.

Explosive Part 1

Part 1: The Maximum Amount Of Damage

In Portland, an extortion letter threatening a bombing was received and in the process of being read when said bomb exploded inside a downtown department store. The search for the culprits stretched on for months before an unrelated case of mail fraud led investigators to a known grifter and his accomplice, whom he employed as 'his eyes', due to the lack of vision of his own. In part one of Explosive, I'll also thrill you with the story of Portland's own Liberty Bell and that time in 1970, when it exploded.

Frozen Blood

For a teen from California, the jarring Alaskan temperatures of late January were unbearable. Luckily, he had three guides there to help him stay warm and to show him the hunting traditions of their ancestors. The day after they began their adventure, the dark figure of the young man was spotted by hunters in a helicopter. Something had happened to his chaperones, and no one, not even the boy knew what had occurred. His story left Alaskan authorities wondering, who killed Oscar Henry, Freddy Jackson, and Clarence Arnold?

The Woodsman

In Oregon's Umpqua National Forest, three officers responded to a report of an unknown party firing on a trailblazing crew, and when they arrived at the hand-built creekside cabin of the man they believed responsible, their suspect's Winchester rifle rang out and one of the officers was shot in the head and killed instantly. The shooter- a nearly-seventy-year-old-recluse, trapper, and gold prospector- fled the scene and vanished into the wilds, moving around the vast search area like a phantom- invisible to his pursuers and seemingly impossible to capture. This is the story of George Baker Dunkin: The Woodsman.

Cycle of Delusion

In the early 1980s, several adults came together and formed a “new light” bible study group in Grants Pass, Oregon. This was a group of Seventh-day Adventists who wanted to be more in tune with God. Eventually, the group welcomed sisters Sharon and Deborah Halstead, childhood friends of the leader’s husband who grew up with him in California. What started out as straightforward bible study morphed into what modern-day religious leaders would call Spiritualism or Voice Ministry, something that the church does not support. The group fractured and some members began following a very unlikely prophet, one who led them down a dark path of destruction and murder.

Unknown Trouble Part 2

Part 2: “Mental Condition Black”

Last week I told you about just a few of the incidents of officer-involved shootings so far this year. The first United States Climate Activist to be killed by authorities, Tyre Nichols, whose death and the subsequent charges to stem from it are being looked at as a blueprint for change. And the three men, Oscar Sanchez, Keenan Anderson, and Takar Smith, who were killed in Los Angeles within 48 hours of each other. Today, I’ll be focusing on one case, that of Manuel Ellis of Tacoma. His beating and restraint-induced death was horrific, but hope remains that the responsible parties will face justice.

Unknown Trouble Part 1

Part 1 "Who Do You Serve"

We had all hoped, perhaps with naive hearts, that the brutal murder of George Floyd, the protests that followed, and the new expectations surrounding inclusion and anti-racism by the ‘woke’ crowd would have meant the killing of Americans, especially of color, by police, would have been lessened if not nearly eradicated. Sadly, predictably, 2022 saw a record number of police-involved killings. Already in 2023, there seems to have been a rash of incidents. One killing in Tacoma, Washington, was lost to the news cycle and the sheer number of incidents. Today, in part one of two, I’ll be talking about just a few of the multiple officer-involved shootings so far this year.

First Them, Then Me

Often we hear of mass shooters taking their lives in the wake of a rampage to avoid being killed by cops or going to jail. But far more often, instances of murder-suicide are intimate and personal. In this week’s case, we discuss the murders of Mitra Mehrabadi, James 'JJ' Hurtado, and Lisa Stevie Haynes and the deaths of Jim Morgan, Kenneth Valdez, Jason Huston, and Terry Daniel.

Skin Glove

On February 18th, 1992, the decomposed body of a man was discovered in the waters near the Black River parkway in Cape Town, South Africa. As the area is rife with gang activity it was initially theorized that the man was yet another victim of gang gun violence, but they soon discovered he had a very unique wound; a crossbow through his head. Using a new technique to help identify the body, they were able to identify him as Victor Graham Chatburn from Kraaifontein, a northern suburb of Western Cape Town. As investigators dug into who could have killed the married father, a truly shocking story unfolded.

Aron & Buzzo

Today’s case was one that was requested. Unlike most that are sent to us, we received many requests for it to be covered, and for good reason. When Aron left his camping party to go on a solo hike, it was nothing out of the ordinary. His friends started to worry when he wasn’t back in time for dinner, something very out of the ordinary. Things only got worse from there when he and his puppy were found dead on a trail. Confessions have been made and stories told, yet no one has been arrested and no one knows why. This is the story of Aron Christenson and Buzz and how the Lewis County Sheriff's office has left his friends and family with more questions than answers.

The Long haul

There were so many active serial murderers in the Pacific Northwest and their often cross-jurisdictional crimes demanded the development of a system called HITS, designed to make connections between reported crimes, in order to better pinpoint suspects and make arrests. In 1991, this system made a match in Seattle, where HITS was based, to a murder in Portland, Oregon. This link would lead them to a man, who for years had worked the highways of the American West as a trucker, and possibly a serial killer.

The Molalla Forest Killer Part 2

Part 2: “Screwdriver”

In last week’s episode, I introduced you to a man named Dayton Leroy Rogers, who was known by local sex workers as a creepy character they called “Steve the Gambler”; a man who enjoyed bondage had a foot fetish and enjoyed inflicting pain on women. Rogers was arrested for the murder of Jennifer Lisa Smith in the summer of 1987. Shortly after his arrest, while they prepared for his upcoming murder trial, authorities made the gruesome discovery of several bodies hidden in the Molalla Forest in Oregon. The similarities between the Molalla Forest discovery and Jennifer Smith were undeniable, and soon detectives would unveil a prolific serial killer who would go on to have the longest-running court case in Oregon history.

The Molalla Forest Killer Part 1

Part 1: "Steve the Gambler"

Oregon has seen its fair share of serial rapists and killers, but few have gained the term prolific. One, in particular, earned that title in the late 1980s. In today’s case, we discuss the origin story of a man who was known on the streets as “Steve the Gambler”, a man who had a wife and child at home, who owned a successful business, and who cruised the streets at night looking for a vulnerable female to be his victim. This is the story of the Molalla Forest Killer Part 1.

Street Kids Part 3

Part 3: “Multnomah County Manson”

For the past two weeks, I’ve told you the stories of the Street Kids of Portland that fell prey to the power of The Family- Led by Grant Charboneau and Greg Wilson. They had a hand in the killings of Hal Charbanou, Misty Largo, and Leon Stanton. One of their murderous helpers was James Nelson. While Grant and Greg spent their time behind bars, James finished his, was released, and soon found himself on the streets yet again. Finally, he could fulfill his desire to be the leader of a group of kids. But he would rule with a literal iron fist. When a young girl with disabilities enters the scene, she struggles to follow the rules and soon meets consequences she never imagined and certainly didn’t deserve. This is the conclusion of Street Kids- and the Multnomah County Manson family.

Street Kids Part 2

Part 2: “Fantastic Army of the Night”

Last week I introduced you to Grant Charboneau, Greg Wilson and the Family of street kids they ruled over. They had their own rules and if they were broken, there would be ramifications. Which was what happened to Misty Largo; a teenage girl who was murdered after a brutal 36 hours of torture, brought on after the family decided she was not abiding. Grant, as XO or the leader of the family, was starting to feel paranoid that his henchman, or hench-boy, 15-year-old Leon might spill about not only Misty, but the violent murder of Hal; Grant’s father. So, what would become of Leon? Today, I’ll be telling you about the death order put out on Leon and what Grant and Greg faced when the police came knocking.

Street Kids Part 1

Part 1: "Rambo Games"

Homeless rates have skyrocketed across the country over the last few years. But it isn’t anything new. But back in the 1980s there was a new scene brewing in the houseless community- street kids. While many of the street kids of Portland were simply looking for a new home, a new sense of community where they could feel safe away from abusive homes, others were finding opportunities to take leadership positions that would allow them to take control over the kids. Creating “Families'' which differed little from the Manson Family. Today I’ll be telling the first part of three surrounding Grant Charboneau, Greg Wilson, James Nelson and how their rule left Jessica Williams, Michelle Largo and Leon Stanton Dead.

Terribly Strong Part 1

Part 1: Nickel-Sized Holes

In 1972, Laura Brock, a college student in Washington, went missing while hitchhiking; her body was found hours later. She had been beaten, raped, and murdered. Eight months later, 15-year-old Kathy Miller got into a stranger's car and vanished. When her plastic-wrapped body was discovered, the beating death she suffered and the circumstances surrounding the murders pointed to a man with the strength of ten and a chilling criminal record. A man named Harvey Carignan.

Unprecedented

In the 1970 and 80s, a serial rapist plagued Portland, OR and surrounding areas. His modus operandi was that he would jog through neighborhoods in east Portland scouting for potential victims. When he found a young girl or woman that captured his attention, he would watch them, sometimes for days, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. When she was alone, he would break in, attack her, hide his face, and rape her before slipping back out into the night. It would take nearly a decade for police to capture him and 36 years later, the survivors of the Portland “Jogger Rapist” still band together in search of justice. We are merely weeks away from his release from prison, and I want to be sure you know who could be moving in next door to you.

Black Friday Part 2

Last week we told the story of Mandy Stavik who was kidnapped and murdered while on a jog in her hometown. Years went on and her case went cold. Then detectives, inspired by a case in England, decided they would do a DNA sweep of the area. In today’s episode, we’ll talk about the lengths detectives and even a good samaritan went to in an effort to put a killer behind bars. Armed with a DNA match, the prosecution seemed poised for an open and shut case, but when the defense went after Mandy, her family and friends started to worry her killer could walk free. Would her murderer ever face consequences for his actions?

Black Friday Part 1

When Mandy Stavik went missing while jogging during the Thanksgiving holiday, her family was terrified they were going to live through the loss of yet another child, after her brother Brent had been tragically murdered years prior. Soon, those fears were realized when Mandy’s body was discovered in a river. Desperate to solve her case, detectives followed the trailblazing steps of British detectives who used a “DNA sweep” to catch a killer of their own. But even if a DNA match was found, would Mandy’s killer be brought to justice? This is part one of Black Friday.

Fear & Section 490

In today’s episode, Alisha shares two of her favorite Patreon episodes. First up is “Fear”. Can everyone feel fear? What scientifically happens when you feel fear? Can you be scared to death? This is the case of Mary Parnell whose life was cut short by a random turn of events that would quite literally leave her scared to death.

Next up, “Section 490”, the story of Manbir Kajila, Samandeep Gill and the importance of following protocol. When a newlywed couple is involved in a fender bender, the task of exchanging information becomes one of dodging bullets and what would have been a crash investigation becomes a murder investigation. The police work, or lack thereof, would end up determining the fate of the killer.

Many neighbors reflected that the Bever family kept to themselves and never really mingled with any of the people in the neighborhood. The family was such a mystery that the neighbors didn’t know their first names until news of a horrific tragedy of what happened to them would be plastered all over the media.

A Bad Deal

In the days before April 27th, our instagram, along with others, were posting phone numbers and information about how to contact Texas’ Gov. Abbot, requesting he grant clemency to Melissa Lucio- a woman who was set to be put to death. The outcry and calls worked and her life has, thus far, been spared. There’s additional good news- not only will she not be murdered by the state, but her appeals are being reviewed which could lead to a new trial and possible release! So, before her next hearing, let's take a look back at her case to understand why there was such an outcry surrounding her possible death and what chance she may have of being cleared of all wrong-doing.

The Night Shift

In the early 1980’s medical personnel at Bexar County Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, noticed that patients in the pediatric intensive care unit were dying at an accelerated rate. They suffered seizures, ceased breathing, some had their hearts completely shut down, and others would bleed uncontrollably after being given a shot or IV. After one nurse looked into the issue, she found that most of these deaths occurred during a single shift, the night shift, when one particular nurse was working. This is the story of Genene Jones, a nurse who was known as the Angel of Death.

Today, We have two more stories regarding missing children whose cases have never been solved. First, Teekah Lewis, a two-year-old who was abducted during a family night out over 20 years ago. The Cline Falls Axe Attack Part 2: "The Hatchet Man"

Part 2: "The Hatchet Man"

In last week’s episode “Leave Us Alone” we discussed the Cline Falls Axe Attack from 1977. College students Terri Jentz and Avra Goldman were in Oregon starting their summer cycling trip across the TransAmerica trail. A few days into their trip they were attacked while camping in Cline Falls State Park. The attacker drove his vehicle to the women’s tent, got out, and hacked at the girls with a hatchet. Miraculously, both women survived. After three years, the case was essentially closed and no one was arrested. Unfortunately, due to the statute of limitations, the Cline Falls Axe attacker would never pay for his crimes. Victim and advocate, Terri Jentz, decided that 15 years later, she wanted to solve her own case. In today’s episode, we explore the journey Terri took interviewing witnesses, gathering clues, and discovering who The Hatchet man was.

The Cline Falls Axe Attack Part 1: "Leave Us Alone"

Part 1: "Leave Us Alone"

The 1970s was a decade where women lobbied and protested and people enjoyed the fashion and musical freedom the decade could offer. More than ever, women were going to college and breaking into careers that used to be solely for men, trying new things, and even going on new adventures. In 1977 two Yale University coeds embarked on the adventure of a lifetime when they decided to dedicate their summer to cycling the TransAmerica Trail. Terri Jentz and Avra Goldman had no idea that when they kicked off their trip in the beautifully scenic Oregon, that they would be stepping into a nightmare. Today, we’ll be discussing the infamous case of the Cline Falls Axe Attack.

Nowhere to be Found

There seems to be no heavier pain to carry than the loss of a child. It’s hard enough to lose a child to a health issue or accident, but when a stranger and violence are involved, it seems unimaginable how a parent or any family member could get through the day when their heart has been shattered by the loss or worse when they don’t know where or what happened to their child. Today, I’ll be telling two stories of young children who went missing under bizarre circumstances. These cases are considered open, but are they in essence, solved? And in both cases, were family members involved? These are the stories of Wallace Guidroz and Lenoria Jones and their mysterious disappearances.

A Private Hell

"By nightfall, the buildings were burning; the commissary had been looted, blankets and bedding were brought to the yard by the inmates. Small make-shift tents sprang up. Convicts were seen eating fresh bread by the loaf, and sheet cakes by the dozen. They drank milk by the gallon and cooked meat and steaks over large bonfires built from the wreckage of the prison. The loud strains of steel guitars played in the background as a night of destruction…occurred. There were many assaults, several knifings, and total destruction of property. Taunting profanities were thrown at the guards whom they knew could not take action." This is the story of the 1968 Oregon Penitentiary Riot.

Excedrin Murders Part Two: SeaMurs

Last week, I told you about Bruce Nickell, a man who mysteriously collapsed and died. Then, just a few days later, also in Auburn, Washington, 40-year-old mother and banker Sue Snow also collapsed and died. When her death was ruled a homicide via cyanide poisoning, her husband Paul was looked at as a suspect and the country was terrified to hear there might be another murderer tampering with capsules. With a nationwide recall, those who had bottles of Excedrin at home were checking the bottles so they could call in if they were in possession of one from the same lot as those Sue Snow had ingested. That was when Stella Nickell, Bruce’s wife, realized they not only had a bottle from that batch, but Bruce had died right after taking a few capsules. So perhaps his death wasn’t caused by emphysema after all.

Excedrin Murders Part One: Darlin' Sue

The Tylenol murders of Chicago in 1981 brought a flurry of change. They inspired a total redesign of medical packaging, to hinder tampering and it spawned the creation of a new anti-tampering federal law. The ripple effect of change went as deep as homes and individuals. Some were so fearful there would be another attack by the uncaptured perpetrator, or perhaps a copycat, they wouldn’t even buy medication in capsule form. Which was why it was so shocking to find Sue Snow, someone who was worried about capsules, in possession of some the morning she collapsed on her bathroom floor. Was this another attack at the hands of the same person from Chicago? Was there someone in the house who wanted Sue dead? Or even worse, was Sue simply a necessary casualty in the eyes of a villainous killer who needed Sue to die for her own benefit? In today's episode, we'll hear the story of Sue Snow, Bruce Nickell, and the Excedrin murders that rocked Washington in the 1980s.

No Stone Unturned

In December of 2011, the tiny city of Deer Park, Washington, was shaken by the horrific news that a local mother of five was found murdered in her own bed. Over the course of the investigation, police pieced together a grim scene. A man broke into her home and laid in wait for his opportunity to strike. He then violently murdered her and left her body in a state to humiliate and degrade her. To this day, there is a line drawn in the sand, and a family is divided on who that man was. Was it a stranger? Was it an online lover? Was it her ex-husband? Though a man sits in prison convicted, by his peers, of the horrific murder of Chanin Starbuck, some of the people closest to her can’t agree that he is the one who actually did it.

A Long Run in the Shadows

In 1923 rural Oregon, a brazen daytime train robbery ended after a strong-arm takeover and a massive dynamite blast, deployed to open a safe containing an alleged fortune, destroyed the train's mail car, setting it ablaze. As it charred to ruin, one person was consumed in the fire and three others were brutally cut down by gunfire. These crimes resulted in a years-long manhunt for the three-man team who had fled far and wide from their epicenter. This is the story of The DeAutremont Brothers, their folly in taking after the Old West outlaws they had grown up worshiping, and the railcar they stopped one cloudless October afternoon: Train Number 13, The Gold Special.

Maintain Dignity

So often in true crime, we hear about the Bogeyman; the Westley Allan Dodds, or Gary Ridgways. An animalistic creature that stalks a person like prey with no rhyme or reason. But too often, the perpetrator of violence is someone within the home; a family member who takes domestic violence too far and ends up killing their family. These horrendous acts leave people wondering how well they know those they share a home, and sometimes a bed with. Today, I’ll be exploring three cases of full or partial family annihilations and speaking with Dr. Stephanie Leite, clinical and forensic psychologist to discuss the signs of someone who may go over the edge and what you can do if you think you’re seeing them.

A Million Other Little Lies

The bodies were discovered nearly 48 hours after their car was found abandoned with its doors hanging open, its occupants vanished in the surrounding woods. It was an execution-style killing, times two. The dead were discovered with their watches and shoes missing, their wallets emptied. Gags were found stuffed in their mouths and both had been fatally shot in the head. And though the FBI took over the investigation, the leads winnowed away to an infrequent drip, which kept it on life support, waiting for someone to uncover the truth. Decades later, a relative of one of those killed will reach across time in an attempt to put the case's scattered pieces together and shine a light on those responsible. Today, I'll tell you about the unsolved Crater Lake Double Murder of 1952, that may have been solved.

Crossed Paths

“When we tie you to the theft of something and that shows deception being part of your character you forfeit the right to be believed you forfeit to be treated as an honest person. And that’s the way it is,” Sgt. Reagan of the Spokane police department was quoted as saying during the investigation surrounding today's case. Perhaps your first response was “screw this guy, people deserve second chances.” But maybe the biggest and perhaps hardest lesson of the pandemic has been to see the true colors of those you thought you knew. While investigators should always process things through the lens of evidence and facts, at what point do we let someone’s history dictate their future, and when should we let bygones be bygones? This is the story of the life and murder of Kenneth Cross of Spokane, Washington, and all the red flags and herrings along the way.

Eye For An Eye

The 1980s which were smack dab in what criminal justice experts call the “Epidemic Years” or “The Golden Age of Serial Murder”, was nothing if not a hodgepodge of frenzied criminal activity: from bogus claims leading to the Satanic Panic to falsely accused Daycare child sex abuse, the rumors of heinous crimes were rampant. In a time when people were fixated on stranger danger, hunting monsters, and saving the children, some of those monsters slipped through the cracks. The bad guys of the 1980s weren’t exactly as the rumors described, but they did do reprehensible acts. Today’s case took place in the final year of that decade; A man known as The Vancouver Child Killer, who could have been the most prolific and horrific child sex abuser of our time, was apprehended thanks to a combination of impatience, coincidence, and the bravery of two people.

Grizzly Summer, Part Two - The Ragged Bear

In Part One of Grizzly Summer, Josh detailed the mauling of two visitors to Glacier National Park and the desperate late-night search for survivors that ensued in its wake. In Part Two, the attack appears to repeat itself hours later, though it occurs miles from the first and seems that a different bear, fearless in the face of humans, had dragged another camper into the moonlit woods, this time as their friends sought safety in trees, forced to hear the crunching of bones as they perched waiting for the moment to flee.

Grizzly Summer, Part One

On a silent August night in 1967, Screams ripped through the darkness in Glacier National Park, Montana. A visitor to the park camping under the stars was attacked in their sleep and dragged away from camp. When an injured survivor of the same attack stumbles upon another camper hundreds of yards away, it triggers a frantic middle-of-the-night search-and-hopefully-rescue mission, crewed by both brave park rangers and overnight visitors, who hours later, would hear word that miles away, there had been another attack that night and another camper dragged into the woods.

End of Trail, Part Two

Last week was the first part of the story of Josh Wade, the disappearance of Mindy Schloss, and the murder of Della Brown, whose beaten body had been found in a shed. In part two, after Josh’s friends wore a wire, Josh Wade had an arrest warrant out and police were starting their hunt for him. This all took place 7 years before Mindy Schloss, a nurse who divided her time between Fairbanks and Anchorage, went missing from her home. When authorities, who all knew the infamous case of Della Brown, learned that Joshua Wade lived next door to Mindy, their instincts told them she had probably met a terrible fate. Now if they could just find her…and him.

End of Trail, Part One

When a well-known and adored nurse went missing in Anchorage, the city was literally brought to a halt in searching for her. It didn’t take long for a suspect to catch the detective's attention. Their concern wasn’t just because he was a neighbor, nor was it because he had outstanding warrants. It was because he had been suspected of killing before. For the next two episodes, I will be telling the stories of Della Brown, Mindy Schloss, and Joshua Wade. Three Alaskans whose lives, and deaths, would become intertwined, generating conversations about the treatment of Indigenous victims, state responsibility, and all of the hurt that could have been avoided.

Invisible

Nestled next to the Canal Acres and Bryant nature parks in Lake Oswego, Oregon, is a stereotypical little cookie-cutter neighborhood. On any given day you can find people outside mowing their lawns, taking a walk with their dogs, or waving at a friendly neighbor, but on a summer evening in 2012, the neighborhood would be disturbed by the sound of gunshots. No one could have imagined the grizzly event that would take place in their quiet neighborhood and how one man could take the lives of those closest to him. This is the case of Adrien Graham Wallace and the innocent lives he stole.

Fallen Angel

In recent episodes, we’ve had Josh talk about the killing of Cassie Jo Stoddart in his Scream inspired Patreon mini and Emily’s stories of catfishing gone wrong in our episode, “Plenty of Catfish”. I wasn’t searching for a similar story, but I stumbled upon one that eerily resembles a mash-up of both of those cases. This is the story of the murder of Cynthia “CeeCee” Hoffman and the alleged catfish that orchestrated her killing.

A Good and Brave Ranger

When a New Year’s Eve party near Seattle, Washington transformed into a shootout, one of the gunmen fled the area after retrieving multiple firearms from his home. The man started driving, ending up high in the Cascade Mountain Range, where he then fled into the wilds after shooting a park ranger. A massive, unrelenting manhunt unfolded over the next 24 hours, with hundreds of searchers tracking snowy foot impressions and following the shooter’s trail through chest-deep snow, icy creeks, and the looming danger of an unstable man with his back against a mountain. Today, I’ll be talking about Benjamin Barnes and his day in Paradise.

When a young trans woman went missing in Vancouver, Washington, her mother and friends knew something terrible had happened. Eventually, investigators narrowed in on a suspect, but he claimed to have simply left her standing at the side of the road. That was until he was taken to court and his story changed, from one of dismissal to self-defense and trans panic. Today, I’ll be telling the story of the inspiration for the newly signed Nikki’s Law: Nikki Kuhnhausen.

Plenty Of Catfish

Technology facilitated sexual violence or TFSV, is a term that was created to describe digitally-focused harassment that can include sexual harassment, gender and sexuality-based harassment, cyberstalking, image-based sexual exploitation, revenge porn, and sexual abuse and violence. And unfortunately, the violence doesn't always stop there. More and more we are seeing cases of murder facilitated through dating apps. Today, Emily will share two cases, both tragedies that occurred when two people made a connection on the popular dating site Plenty Of Fish. These are the murders of Ingrid Lyne and Christine Wood.

Ingrid’s Lynes family has set up a GoFundMe fundraiser in the hopes of raising money for her three daughters.

Catching Cletus Part 2 - A Man Who Cared

Carl Cletus Bowles was serving concurrent state and federal sentences at Oregon State Penitentiary, one of which was for murder. In Part 1 of Catching Cletus we learn that he and another ex-convict had gone on a four-day multi-state crime spree in 1965, robbing a motel and raping the desk clerk, committing a brazen mid-day bank robbery in Portland, Oregon, killing a Sheriff’s Deputy in Eugene, kidnapping multiple families, and fleeing from authorities through Oregon, California, and Nevada. Both men were sentenced to life in prison and were never to be considered for parole. In Part 2, the conclusion of this case, we learn that in 1974, Bowles somehow acquired a conjugal visit pass, which he used as cover to escape custody and act out a sequel, of sorts, to his earlier crimes.

Catching Cletus Part 1

When two men cross paths in jail, they become fast friends, but their plans for release don’t include rehabilitation. What their plans do include are repeating the type of crimes that got them imprisoned in the first place; robbery and assault. That was only the start of the men's spree. After four days, they left in their path of destruction a rape victim, a club shootout, multiple abducted families and a dead cop. This is the first part of the story of Carl Cletus Bowles and Wilfred Gray and the terror they inflicted across three states in 1965.

The Last Seduction

When a body is discovered on a remote road in Hope, Alaska, names on the documents found in the dead man’s pockets lead investigators to the deceased’s girlfriend. Or was she his fiance? Or was she just a cover for his sexuality? The trail of circumstantial evidence took officers down a wild path of exotic dancers, multiple finances, and living arrangements that seemed odd to even the most open-minded. Today, on Murder in the Rain, listen to the story of the murder of Kent Leppink and his relationship with Mechele Hughes.

At The Fair

In the Pacific Northwest, we have many mysterious disappearances, in particular, missing children. Two notorious missing children have eerie similarities between their cases, though they are completely unrelated. Both kids were 14 year old, both spoke to their mother on the phone right before going missing, and both disappeared from their local fair. Today, I’d like to tell you about the disappearances of Jeremy Bright who went missing in 1986 and Misty Copsey who went missing in 1992.

Overcorrecting Their Failure

Among the many serial killers who have crossed paths with Portland, Oregon, there is one killer whose shocking attack and dismemberment of a woman shook the city and changed the rules for the FBI. Luckily he was caught and put away before he could hurt anyone else. But then, he was paroled, and exactly what you would think would happen, happened. Leaving body parts and devastation in his path, Richard Marquette is still behind bars but it was quite a journey to get him there.

For Ransom

Kidnapping for ransom is still prevalent across the world, however, in today's United States it is essentially obsolete. Today’s episode covers three historic US kidnappings that helped to fuel the American parent’s fear for the wellbeing of their child. While the cases are unique in their own way, each child’s parents agonized over whether or not they would see their child again, and not all of them did. Listen in while we discuss the cases of Charles Lindbergh Jr.,Marion Parker, and George Weyerhaeuser.

Record-Breaking

Perhaps it’s the distance of a shooting that keeps our interest at a distance. We tell ourselves we will never be in that situation. We aren’t ‘thugs’ or ‘gangsters’, but it’s victim blaming like that which allows these murders to continue without the same concern and outrage we have towards a serial killer stalking and killing someone. Today we discuss the record amount of shootings in the Portland, Oregon area, share stories of some of the unsolved shooting deaths, and try to understand what is causing the record violence.

The Cunning Of A Man

In February of 1990, a Beaverton teen was lured from her house by a school friend, a former boyfriend. He raped her, murdered her, and hid her body in hopes that he could get away with it. What ensued after the murder of 16-year-old Erin Reynolds was a complex court case that brougt both families in and out of court for decades while Oregon changed the sentencing of Conrad Engweiler multiple times and eventually set him free.

Being Creeped

It’s that time of year again, the best time, Halloween time! I think part of Halloween’s appeal is how it can be a mix of Disneyland with Las Vegas but with lots of candy. We decorate our homes with things that, any other time of the year might be deemed “macabre”. Excuses need not be made to act wild, silly or child-like. Costumes of clothing we would never dream of wearing around our friends and family become totally accepted. Rules become obsolete and the line of expected behaviors begins to blur. Today I’ll be telling two stories of lives lost on Halloween. A pair from Alaska and a teen in British Columbia. All three victims having held out hopes for an enjoyable Halloween night while falling victims to the horrors the holiday can bring.

What Happened To Gracie?

As the summer of 2021 came to an end and the fall began, we saw the internet come together to try and locate missing 22-year-old Gabby Petito. From true crime podcasters to video gaming dads with a proclivity to finding hidden details in surveillance footage, we saw a massive nationwide fixation to help bring Gabby home. We also saw anger from the underserved families of missing people of color. What about MY child? What about MY sister? What about MY mom? There are thousands of missing people of color who are “lucky” to get a brief mention on the nightly news - it isn’t until families take it upon themselves, begging for attention from anyone with a platform, that they seem to be heard. Today we’re sharing the case of missing mother of four Graciela Garcia, a case I hadn’t heard about until her daughter reached out, one that hasn’t garnered much media attention at all, and one that seems like it should be solved by now.

The family of Graciela Garcia is currently trying to raise money to obtain a lawyer and a private investigator to help locate her. Please consider donating to their GoFundMe if you can: Missing Gracie Garcia from Hermiston OR

You can also donate amounts under $10 directly to Murder in the Rain over the next two weeks. We will combine any donations with our own that will be given to Gracie’s GoFundMe on October 15th. We’re accepting PayPal (murderintherain@gmail.com) and Venmo (@murderintherain)

Cosmic Coincidence

We’ve heard many stories of “cursed lands''. Usually, it’s surrounding a colonizer building on indigenous American land who is then dealt a nasty curse, think Poltergeist. Cursed land stories only continue the misconceptions surrounding what are perceived as “mysterious” cultures like indigenous Americans or gypsies. If a piece of land isn’t cursed, can it still harbor evil? Can a location continually be a draw for those that wish others harm? Today I’ll be telling the stories of Barbara Tucker, Jennifer Tchier, Mindi Thomas, Lila Moler, Stephanie Russell, and Alexandria Ison- connecting a serial killer to bodies that have been found on or around a community college in Gresham, Oregon.

The Backup Plan

Today’s case shows you how an average American family can have dark secrets behind closed doors. A couple once totally in love can turn on each other for lust or money, or to avoid the inconvenience that breaking up can inflict. What exactly can make some turn from committing to spending the rest of their life with someone to plotting to commit the murder of that same person? How can one person be totally in love only to find out the object of their affection wants them dead? This is the story of Michael Christopher MacCallum; a son, a father, a husband, a fiance, and a victim of murder.

Soon, Cindy

More often than not, a case appears to be cut and dry. At the very least, a death is usually obvious as to if it was caused by an accident, by the victim, or by foul play. But in today’s case, none of those answers are clear. Was Cindy James a tortured victim that was hunted and haunted for 7 years by a perpetrator who eventually caused her death, or were her own mental health issues causing her to attack herself? I’ll let you decide as I walk you through the evidence of the stalking and killing of Vancouver, BC’s Cindy James.

X Marks The Spot

Can livestock be the perfect coverup for murder and the TV tropes about pigs true? After a farmhand goes missing in southwestern Oregon the gruesome details around his “disappearance” begin to unfold. Is it possible that a female serial killer remained hidden in the farmland of the Rogue Valley avoiding detection and preying on the nomadic locals that helped her on her farm? In today’s case, we talk about the infamous Susan Monica and the details around her 2014 arrest for the murders of Robert Haney and Stephen Delicino, a story straight out of a crime novel. The question remains, were there more pieces of men buried in the ground of her quiet slice of farm paradise?

Gravitational Attraction

When people hear “Murder” they usually think of a gun, knife, or strangulation. What if the murder weapon is a combination of choices, actions, and a vehicle? Every day, an average of 102 lives are lost due to car crashes in the US, 27 of which are due to an impaired driver. That breaks down to about 1 death every 14 minutes. Car accidents are just that right, accidents? What if what caused the accident was avoidable? What if political connections led to an alleged murderer being released? Would those be considered accidents too? Today’s episode is the story of Stacy Morrow, Ryan Sorensen, and Brandon Clements and how their murderer went from being a neglectful driver to the US Marshall’s most wanted list.

Bumper

In the early 1980s, several girls went missing in the Salem, Oregon area. Some disappeared with hardly a trace while others turned up dead. An 18-year-old recent high school graduate disappeared while delivering pizzas on the night of July 4th, 1982 leaving behind her car with the engine still running. The hunt for her abductor would lead those working on the case down many paths, but no one expected how it would be connected to multiple murders years later. In today’s episode, we explore the cases of Sherry Eyerly, Rebecca Darling, Katherine Redmond, and Terry Monroe; four young women who were taken when their lives were just beginning.

Abnormal, Wrong, Unnatural, And Perverse

When a lesbian couple went missing for three days in Medford, Oregon, concerns for their safety were immediate. Roxanne and Michelle were partners and vocal supporters of gay rights. When their bodies were discovered, it led investigators down a path of destruction left behind by a homophobic man obsessed with an exotic dancer who had already committed another hate-fueled murder mere weeks before he was caught by police. Today’s story is about the murders of Roxanne Ellis, Michelle Abdil, and Scott George- those that lost their lives due to hate, fear, and judgment.

Stay tuned at the end of the case today as we will be joined by Nancy Duffy, the executive producer of Forensic Files 2 on HLN for an exclusive conversation where we discuss how they were able to safely make a new season of our favorite true crime series even during a pandemic, the challenges they overcame and she’ll even share some clues with us as to what kind of mysteries we can expect from the new season!

He Was Counterfeit

Waldport, Oregon is a small quiet town along the Pacific Coast located south of Newport. With a little over 2,000 permanent residents, your chances of being a victim of a violent crime are pretty low, but it happens. While we were all reeling from the immediate aftereffects of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, no one was prepared for the shocking case that would rock this small coastal town in December of 2001. In today’s case, we explore the details around the first case of family annihilation in Oregon state; an entire family died all at the hands of the father who should have protected them. This is the case of the narcissistic Christian Longo; a man who was charming, cunning, and counterfeit.

Ten Times More Likely

In today’s episode, you’ll learn about two cases of missing children who disappeared under incredibly suspicious circumstances. Cody Haynes was 11 years old when he disappeared from his bedroom in Kittitas, WA leaving his stuffed animals in his bed to look like he was asleep. In the days that followed, it became clear that Cody didn’t just run away and his father looked more and more like he might have something to do with his disappearance. Sky Metalwala and his mother were on their way to the doctor when car troubles left them stranded on the side of the road in Bellevue, WA. Sky disappeared from his car seat after his mother left him alone, it wasn’t long before people started pointing their fingers at her.

For tip regarding Cody Haynes, please contact the Kittitas Police at 509-925-8534

The Massacre

When the Whitman family wagons made their way to the Pacific Northwest, they were literal trailblazers. Not only were they some of the first non-native people to cross the Rocky Mountains, they included the first white woman to make it so far West. Accomplishments aside, the Whitman’s brought more than their own curiosity and sense of adventure. They also brought religion, other settlers, and eventually death. As the white man took over more and more land, the Native American’s asked, then begged for the colonization to stop. And when the Whitman’s refused to heed the warning, they were met with a massacre.

Join Murder in the Rain as we take you waaaaaay back to learn about some of the Native American history of the Pacific Northwest, the journey of the Whitman family, and why it shouldn’t take an axe to the head for people to respect the space of others.

What Happens In The House

Angela McAnulty was no stranger to trauma after growing up in a household of abuse and tragically losing her mother to murder in 1973. After being arrested for drugs and having her children taken away, she went to jail and then got clean in the hopes of restarting her life. However when the opportunity came, rather than a reunion filled with laughter, love, and the start of a wonderful new beginning, she became a monster.

In today’s case, you’ll learn the horrific story of what happened to 15 year old Jeanette Maples at the hands of the people who should have protected her. Angela McAnulty’s trial was notorious in Oregon as it was one of the few death penalty cases against a woman and brings the idea of “justice” to a new light.

Today’s promo was from A Little Bit Grim podcast; a weekly podcast covering Paranormal, True Crime, Folklore, Conspiracies, Cults, and Disasters.

A Waking Nightmare

In 2020, Asian American and Pacific Islanders in the United States were faced with a barrage of hate crimes. From getting punched while walking to the store to spat at by strangers passing, fear is rippling through the AAPI community, rightfully so. While his death was not targeted because of his heritage, the loss of Matthew Choi was a huge loss in Portland. Everyone from his Korean family and friends to the local foodies that loved his kimchi were hurt and scared by the senseless taking of his life.

In today’s episode, Murder in the Rain will be discussing the numbers surrounding AAPI hate crimes, share some local examples, and talk about the shocking murder of entrepreneur, Matthew Choi.

2,640 Days

In 1977, a young woman was kidnapped by a seemingly safe-looking couple while hitchhiking from Oregon to California. For over seven years she would be held against her will, suffering daily whippings, rapes, and other unimaginable tortures. When she was finally able to make her escape, the public was horrified and baffled. Horrified after hearing the details of her life of captivity in a box and baffled that this young woman wouldn’t take advantage of her small bouts of freedom to run for her life. When she finally escaped, she had a whole new battle to survive; convincing a jury to recognize Stockholm Syndrome.

In Murder in the Rain’s episode ‘2,640 Days’, you’ll learn about Colleen Stan, the woman who was kidnapped by Cameron and Janice Hooker and held captive in the most unspeakable conditions. She started as ‘The Girl in the Box’ but soon became ‘The Girl that Survived’. You’ll also learn about another girl, the first victim, one who didn’t survive; Marie Elizabeth Spannhake.

Slick

This week’s story isn’t about moving, and the murder doesn’t take place in the northwest (I know!), but its origins do. So let’s Haul...ass to Ridgefield, Washington, 1943 where fate would have two lovers meet, start a company that would change how we move, lead to one of the most public and expensive family feuds in modern history and leave a family destroyed by suicide and murder. Today I’m talking about the ubiquitous brand, U-haul, and the murder of its founder’s daughter-in-law, Ava Shoen.

Hearts & Death

Valentine’s Day is usually a day for lovers, one where they can dote on each other and express their love in the form of special time and presents. But in today’s episode we learn that for some, the happiness of Valentine’s Day can be replaced with heartache, fear, and even death. Gerald Dean Krein Jr. was a depressed man who desired to take others down with him when he was ready to complete suicide. He planned an extravagant sex and suicide party for Valentine's Day 2005. Miles away and years prior Delmar Anholt Jr., a troubled man about to become a father, would commit one of the most atrocious killings in Oregon’s history on Valentine’s Day 1982.

Any Hate

In the last few weeks, we’ve seen just how much can happen when a group of white supremacists gets together. In 2011, the terror came not from a large group, but a young couple with shared beliefs in hatred. Once they found each other through white supremacist groups, Joey Pederson and Holly Grisby went on a 10-day spree of terror through Washington, Oregon, and California that would leave four dead and the west coast shaken.

Uncle Joe

The man now known as “The Longview Serial Killer” was once a child victim to a time in our history where native children were plucked out of their homes to be adopted out to white middle-class families. The little boy who was affectionately called “Joey” by his adoptive mother, grew up to be a terrifying nightmare to many children in the Pacific Northwest. Today’s case is about Joseph Kondro. He found the vulnerable, the less fortunate, and the impressionable and lulled them into safety with his affection and attention. “Uncle Joe” as they called him would steal their childhood and leave them scarred, but for some little girls, he also stole their lives.

Trunks

Small, tight, confined spaces. Not many people like them and most of us have been feeling claustrophobic while stuck at home. One of those small places would be the final resting place for 4 women in the Portland area. It seems shocking and unexpected, especially for Portland, but many people end up having their bodies stuffed in the trunks of cars. In this episode, Murder in the Rain will share four stories about women who were taken, killed, and hidden in their own trunks.

Ice Cold

It’s the holiday season and many of us are celebrating with a Christmas tree and the promise of Santa’s visit. While this is normally a happy time for us all, it’s a time for great sadness for one family in Washington State. Ed and Minnie Maurin were an elderly couple who disappeared just before a Christmas party in 1985. Their bodies would later be discovered and the entire town would be left asking what really happened to them. The case quickly grew cold and for over 30 years we were left wondering if anyone would be held accountable for their deaths. In the latest episode, we will share how one man bravely broke his silence and helped uncover a secret buried in this small town.

The Wrong Track

Kurt Cobain. A household name synonymous with grunge, the 90’s and unfortunately, suicide. Although it’s yet to be proven otherwise, for 26 years rumors have persisted that someone besides Kurt took his life. In this week’s episode, Murder In The Rain will examine Kurt’s childhood, his history of mental health and addiction struggles and the so-called evidence presented by a private detective with his own agenda, preventing Kurt from resting in peace. So did Kurt hate his life and want to die or did something more nefarious take place?

The Beginning To Her End

In today’s case, Emily will talk about how childhood bullying can be more dangerous than hurt feelings and tears. The impact of bullying stretches from depression and anxiety, to alcohol and drug abuse, and in some cases, the trauma is too much to come back from. This is one of those stories; how a teenage decision to get a little bit of revenge impacts an entire community. This is the story of Reena Virk and how a group of peers lured her out and attacked her.

Wicked Part Of Me

Since 1849 there have been 110 executions in Washington State. In recent years, capital punishment was abolished in the state, however, not in time to save the lives of the three men we’ll discuss today. In today’s case, Emily tells you the events that resulted in the three most recent executions in Washington State. Three men who were deemed too monstrous to keep their lives; one child rapist, one violent repeat offender and one torturer.

Non-Unanimous

Systemic racism might be a new term for a lot of people, but today we’re going to dive into the judicial side of it. In this episode, Alisha will hold our hands through Oregon’s historically racist laws, but this time it’s to celebrate their undoing! By revisiting the infamous murders of a couple caught up in the Portland mob, we’ll learn about racist roots as to why this law was created in the first place, the lives it affected for nearly a century and how its being overturned will continue to affect Oregonians that are in the appeal process.

Tell Everyone On This Train I Love Them

Lately, it has felt that every day brings new tragedy and heartbreak. The loss of lives from civilians standing up to racists and white supremacists is nothing new; it has been going on for generations before us. It’s just that now we can watch it unfold live in the palm of our hands.

Today’s story is one of those heartbreaks. The story of citizens that wanted to stand up for what is right and were met with hate and death. When Demetria Hester, Micah Fletcher, Rick Best, and Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche stood up against a coward, they had no idea that for some, their lives would change. For others, it would end.

Number 5

In a span of three months, dozens of crimes took place along the west coast’s Interstate Five. What was seemingly multiple culprits committing burglary, rape, and murder turned out to be just one man. Law enforcement agencies worked together to share information and with the help of numerous witnesses they put together at least over 20 sketches of the face of a man dubbed the “I-5 Bandit”, a man who would eventually be known as the “I-5 Killer”.

Negative Corpus

Derrick and Roxanne Duehren were living their dream life just outside Portland, Oregon in 1996 until a mysterious fire in the garage would take her life and leave all eyes on her husband Derrick.

In today’s episode Alisha will tell us the story of 34 year old Roxanne Duehren; how her murder, presumed to be a closed case, may leave some feeling a lack of justice. Emily will share a little bit about the history of fire science. As a special treat, MITR is joined by our delightful friends from the podcast Forensic Myles to discuss everything about this case!

Wallowing

Today’s episode will introduce you to a sadistic monster who masqueraded as a good samaritan and a loving mother. She hid over 10 years of torture abuse behind the closed doors of a cute little house nestled in a tiny rural town. Plug your headphones in and come meet the mother you never wish you had. Check out the episode blog for photos!

Special guest psychologist Dr. Joni Jonston will join Emily to chat all about Michelle Knotek and why it’s probably not the best idea to let her out of prison. Don’t forget to check out Dr. Joni’s YouTube series Unmasking a Murderer and her blog on Psychology Today, The Human Equation.
