CHLOE'S PHILO CHOSES MOTHERHOOD OVER CAREER

The top British designer Phoebe Philo has resigned as creative director at Chloe to spend more time with her new baby.

Philo, who led the Chloe design team for the last four years, cited "personal reasons" for leaving in a Chloe statement.

Speculation has been growing that the 32 year-old designer, who gave birth to a daughter last year, planned to chose her family life over her stellar career.

The demands of running one of the fastest-growing European brands were at odds with her need to focus on motherhoodand the designer chose to opt out of the 2004 fall-winter ready-to-wear season after giving birth. Although her work was based in London, Philo spent eight days a month in Paris.

Philo, the 32-year-old winner of the top designer prize at the 2004 British fashion awards, succeeded Stella McCartney as the chief creative mind at Chloe and has been known for light, airy designs. She was invited to work for the company by McCartney, less than a year after her graduation from Central Saint Martins School of Art in 1996.

From the start, she was widely considered the more talented designer and where Stella's famous father brought much needed publicity, Philo's eclectic vintage-inspired look and more youthful and street-wise edge increased sales and brought critical acclaim. It came as no surprise to the fashion world that Phoebe took over the helm when McCartney left for Gucci in 2001.

As well as dressing a host of celebrities from Kylie Minogue to Kirsten Dunst, Philo was also credited for producing the 'Paddington' bag, a must have accessory in fashion circles.

Frenchman Roland Mouret, best known for his much imitated 'galaxy' dress is hotly tipped as her likely successor.
