Watches And Wonders 2024 - Tudor Watches and Patek Philippe Watch Predictions

Watches & Wonders is coming, and Tudor will be there alongside is larger sister Rolex. The "junior" brand from the Rolex universe has no qualms about coopting the history of its big sibling, and many of the most recent Tudor Black Bay models reflect famous watches from Rolex's back catalog. Will Tudor launch a "Tudor Daytona" at Watches and Wonders 2024? Tim Mosso predicts major new watches at the biggest show of the year.

In 2018, Tudor launched its own "Pepsi" GMT alongside the Rolex GMT Master II. In 2022, Tudor gave us the Black Bay Pro, a Rolex Explorer II 1655 tribute in all but name. And in 2023, the famed Rolex GMT "Pan Am" executive dial returned as yet another Black Bay GMT. What does 2024 hold? How about a Tudor branded tribute to the original Rolex Daytona 6239?

It makes sense that Tudor would introduce such a watch. Rolex doesn't do retro and mostly avoids nostalgia. Its watches are modern and forward-looking with only an occasional glance over the shoulder - 2023's Daytona Le Mans (Paul Newman) was an example. But Tudor can go all-out with things Rolex cannot. A Tudor Daytona tribute can be 39mm in diameter with pump pushers, plexiglas crystal, manual wind movement, and Singer "exotic" dial (i.e., Paul Newman).

Tudor, which already uses the Breitling caliber B01 chronograph movement, can call upon Breitling to deliver the manual wind version, caliber B09. Rolex would never go back to a plastic crystal, but Tudor might. At the very least, Tudor could specify a sapphire crystal with the same bulbous curvature as plexiglas. And Tudor already uses vintage inspired "rivet style" bracelets on various versions of the Black Bay dive watch. With some adjustments for size, that style of bracelet would be perfect for a "Tudor Daytona."

Why stop at the Paul Newman? Tudor could offer a few interpretations of classic Rolex Daytona dials. "Big Red" Daytonas, "Double Swiss Underline" Daytonas, and perhaps even the prototype late sixties Rolex "Yacht Master" dial could be resurrected at Watches & Wonders 2024.

What will Patek Philippe launch? Why not a return of the 1950s 3417 Amagnetic? Like Rolex, Patek Philippe generally avoids exact re-issues of past watches. But a quick review of Patek's current catalog reveals a gap big enough to fit a modern "engineer's" watch. Could a spiritual successor to the Patek Philippe Amagnetic be coming? As ever, part of the fun of Watches and Wonders is the opportunity to make predictions.
