Plot Summary: Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) is a popular silent film star who barely tolerates his vain, spoiled, conniving, and shallow leading lady, Lina Lamont, (Jean Hagen) though their studio, Monumental Pictures, links them romantically to increase their popularity. At the premiere of their latest film, The Royal Rascal, Don is forced to escape his adoring fans and jumps into a passing car driven by Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds). She drops Don off, but not before claiming to be a stage actress and sneering at his "undignified" accomplishments as a movie star. Later, at an after-party, to Don's amusement, Kathy pops out of a mock cake right in front of him, revealing herself to be a chorus girl. Furious at Don's teasing, she throws a cake at him, accidentally hitting Lina in the face, and then flees. Don becomes smitten with Kathy and a budding romance starts. After rival studio, Warner Bros., has an enormous hit with its first talking picture, the 1927 film The Jazz Singer, the studio head (Millard Mitchell) decides he has no choice but to convert the next Lockwood and Lamont film, The Dueling Cavalier, into a "talkie", but the initial preview screening is a disaster. Don and Kathy, aided by Don’s musical sidekick, Cosmo Brown (Donald O’Conner), set out to try to save the movie and their careers. The Artist (2011) ft. Sarah Duncan

This week, we had an unexpected emergency, and Dana and I had to take a quick break. We will be back to our regular schedule next week, but this is the episode I recorded as a birthday favor for my little sister, Sarah, last year in August during the middle of the pandemic yet. It's a bit of a blast from the past as this was done before we really started to develop a lot of the newer production and editing on the show or some of the new feature parts we've added this season, and so this certainly will sound a lot different than the recent ones we've put out.

Tom and Sarah discuss The Artist (2011): written and directed by Michel Hazanavicius, starring Jean Dejardin, Berenice Bejo, Malcolm McDowell, and John Goodman.

Plot Summary: In the 1920s, actor George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a bona fide matinee idol with many adoring fans. While working on his latest film, George finds himself falling in love with an ingenue named Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) and, what's more, it seems Peppy feels the same way. But George is reluctant to cheat on his wife with the beautiful young actress. The growing popularity of sound in movies further separates the potential lovers, as George's career begins to fade while Peppy's star rises.

A Bridge Too Far (1977)

Dana and Tom tackle one of Dana's favorite genres this month, war movies, in honor of Memorial Day, and start with one of Dana's favorites growing up, A Bridge Too Far, directed by David Attenborough; starring Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Caine, Elliott Gould, Gene Hackman, Robert Redford, and Laurence Olivier.

Plot Summary: In 1944 as the Western Front is bogged down by supply shortages, the Allies look for a deceive victory to end the war. General Bernard Montgomery proposes Operation Market Garden which envisions 35,000 men being flown and dropped behind enemy lines in the Netherlands. Two divisions of US paratroopers the 101 and the 82 lead by Generals Maxwell Taylor (Paul Maxwell) and James Gavin (Ryan O’Neal) are responsible for securing the road and bridges as far as Nijmegen. The first British Airbourne Division, under Major-General Roy Urquhart (Sean Connery), is to land near Arnhem and hold both sides of the bridge there reinforced by a brigade of Polish paratroopers under General Stanisław Sosabowski (Gene Hackman). The Arnhem bridge is the primary target, as it serves as the last means of escape for the German forces in the Netherlands and a direct route to Germany for the Allies. The road to it, however, is only a single highway linking the various key bridges, and vehicles have to squeeze to the shoulder to pass. The drop proves troublesome, and a Battalion lead by Lt. Cor. John Frost (Anthony Hopkins) is able to reach the bridge but is soon surrounded. XXX Corps lead by Lt Colonel J.O.E. Vandeleur (Michael Caine) finds progress slowed by German resistance and the narrowness of the highway. The race is on to reach the Arnhem bridge and save the First British Airbourne.

At a time when gunslinging days are reaching an end, Adams helps recruit a band of men each with their own reason for taking on what appears to be a lost cause.
