Bill McKibben On Tesla, Elon Musk, Unions, Cryptocurrency, & Social Trust
In the second part of my two-part interview with Bill McKibben, we spent a lot of time talking about Elon Musk, Tesla, and social trust. That included getting into the topic of unions, the UAW itself, cryptocurrency, and whether or not people with nefarious — or at least selfish and greedy — motives have intentionally split the "climate solutions community." This is surely a topic I will come back to repeatedly, and I'm almost considering writing a book on it, but it was good to get into it a bit with someone as notable, influential, and intelligent as Bill McKibben.

More Efficient Nitrogen Fertilizer For Farmers, Part 2
Michael Barnard sits down with Karsten Temme, PhD, geneticist and CEO of PivotBio. His company, founded with his long term academic collaborator Alvin Tamsir, is based on a eureka moment. They'd been analysing nitrogen-fixing microbes in soil, with the intent of inserting the genetic codes in plants. The microbes naturally fix nitrogen from the air in return for sugars from the plant roots, but that's suppressed by fertilization. But changing plant genetics was hard. Then, as they walked out for coffee one day, they asked "What if we turned off the nitrogen sensors in the microbes instead?" And now they have a million acres under cultivation and $430 million in Series D funding.

Rivian, Tesla, Auto Dealers, & Backwards State Laws — Part 2
In this episode, I talked with Vice President of Public Policy at Rivian James Chen for our CleanTech Talk podcast series. A video recording of our one-hour discussion is now online for CleanTechnica Members, Supporters, Technicians, and Ambassadors to view on YouTube. We talked a bit about the broader electric vehicle market and how the various EV startups and serious EV efforts from legacy automakers are all partners in the mission to phase out fossil-powered vehicles, but the bulk of the discussion was about why the ability to sell directly to customers is critical for EV startups and how that is being blocked in many US states — a problem found nowhere else in the world. Now that Rivian is on the verge of bringing its vehicles to market, it is facing the same challenges (and more) that Tesla has faced for years trying to sell its vehicles directly to customers in the United States. James Chen and his team are tackling the problem, and he spoke with CleanTechnica about many of the details of this and related matters. Jim has worked on this issue for a long time, as he was previously at Tesla from 2010 to April 2016, where he ended as Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Deputy General Counsel before moving on.

For the second episode of a daily Cleantech Talk Today show, Nicolas Zart and I talked about Tesla marketing, Tesla Model 3 battery production, Tesla battery recycling, and some other highlights from Tesla's annual shareholder meeting. But that was just to kick off the show. We also discussed the ongoing insanity of fossil fuel subsidies & politics. On a slightly more positive note, we discussed high-speed rail and a cool new Texas bullet train that connects to Amtrak. Of course, the US rail story is not super uplifting, but it was good to talk about a bit of progress. We ended our chatting with a long back & forth on wireless EV charging, BMW's leadership (more or less) in bringing a car to market that comes with wireless EV charging, and the super odd fact that it's a plug-in hybrid with a relatively small battery.

We highlighted the odd Canadian news about the government buying a Kinder Morgan pipeline, a topic we've had a couple more op-eds discussing since my chat with Nicolas. A couple of other quick notes were about Zipcar adding 325 Volkswagen e-Golfs to its London fleet and a 96-year-old auto mechanic and racing legend falling in love with his new Tesla Model 3. We spent the most time, though, discussing innovation at Tesla, Tesla Model 3 motors, Tesla batteries, and Tesla's unique over-the-air updates (unique for the auto world, that is).

Episode #39 of Cleantech Talk is here! A giant passive house project in Vancouver, a trackless train, and an unsatisfactory Tesla conference call stole the show in our opinion, so that's what we discussed.

Amazon's Mighty Wind (Cleantech Talk #38)
Episode 38 of Cleantech Talk kicks off with a discussion of how, while China may be overperforming with its solar panel buildout, those panels are underperforming due to the low air quality there. Which is a polite way of saying that coal-combustion aerosols are reducing solar panels’ electricity harvest -- by up to a third! (Dark aerosols, like soot, tend to absorb light; other aerosols such as sulfates and nitrates, reflect light. In both cases, the aerosols prevent light from reaching solar panels below.) There’s a Laffer Curve at play here, Laffer Curve being a wonkish way of describing the Goldilocks principle that the ideal porridge is between the two extremes of hot and cold. A fellow named Arthur Laffer once pointed out that if a government wanted to maximize revenue, it shouldn’t set the tax rates too high or too low. To his everlasting credit, he pointed out that others had the idea before him, but the name “Laffer Curve” has stuck.

Batteries by Land, Sea or Air! (Cleantech Talk #35)
Though cars get most of the attention, batteries will participate in our cleantech energy transition on land, in the air and by sea. And in today’s Cleantech Talk, we cover them all. It’s something of a “double-cheeseburger” episode, in that we stretched ourselves around four topics instead of the usual two.

Tesla Model 3 & Nissan LEAF 2.0 Impressions — CleanTech Talk Returns! (CTT #33)
Hello again, listeners and readers. After a longer than expected off-season, Cleantech Talk is back! Season 3’s contributions should be a bit more regular than Season 2 was, given that I’ve moved -- “pivoted” in Silicon Valley lingo -- from his full-time engineering job to communications consulting, specifically to be able to dedicate more time to the podcast and related activities. Some pre-emptive apologies are in order for this week’s audio; I didn’t set my levels correctly, so there could be some hissing. I’ve also clearly forgotten the old Toastmasters rule about not using filler words like “um” and “uh”. Always room to improve, eh? We’ll also have time, now, to figure out how to improve the sound quality. Our two big stories related to summer’s big Tesla Model 3 announcement, and September’s new Nissan Leaf unveiling.

The Two-Wheel rEVolution. And, Is Uber Goobered? (Cleantech Talk 32)
Nicolas started us off with his report from the San Diego Electric Bike Expo. Gocycle's use of lightweight magnesium for its bike frame is surely an expensive one, but on further reflection, it might be that for mass-market bicycles, as with mobile phones, there’s no such thing as “too light.” Easy disassembly should add greatly to the convenience factor, as well. ... + Uber: Goobered?

Canada Cancels Coal, Nissan Kiboshes Keiretsu, VW's Electric Pivot (Cleantech Talk 30)
Nicolas and Matthew kicked this week’s episode of CleanTech Talk off with the news that the Canadian government had committed to phasing coal out by 2030. Carlos Ghosn has continued his iconoclastic ways — at least by Japanese corporate standards — by having Nissan jettison its 41% stake in Calsonic, its biggest supplier. What can we say? VW’s diesel scandal is so bad, the company’s been forced to commit deeply to electric vehicles to rehabilitate its image. And while part of its plan involves expanding its presence in the United States, Volkswagen's never really been strong in North America.

It is all about his vision for the BMW i5. We then delve into a fascinating recent acquisition -- Total's acquisition of Saft -- and the general topic of Total's apparent leadership among oil companies in the transition to clean energy.

Cleantech Talk #12
In this week's second episode of Cleantech Talk, Chris DeMorro and I kick off the show by talking about an Edmunds study released on Earth Day that illogically bunched plug-in electric cars with conventional hybrids (and bashed them). I get a little worked up. We also talk about why electric cars are great first cars for teenagers, and why they love them. We go from there to another fun one about a Bosch autopilot video that features a Tesla Model S. And we close with a discussion about some electric car early adopters (true early adopters) who have been driving electric for at least a decade. Thanks to our friends at Plug In America for that one.

Crazy Kia Dealer, Tesla P85D Test Drive, BMW i3 On Amazon, Electric Mustang... (Cleantech Talk #10)
1. The first story we ranted about was the story of a Kia dealer in Vancouver who very blatantly pushed away a customer who was looking to buy a Kia Soul EV. The story is a really absurd one, but it's also a good demonstration for why Tesla doesn't trust dealers to sell electric cars. 2. That led us into a future in which we can simply skip the sketchy dealers and buy our cars online. Sure, galleries and test drives are still a must, but there's a lot of benefit to purchasing online. Aside from Tesla, one car company bringing us into that future is BMW. The news is that BMW is now selling its i3 on Amazon Japan. 3. Another interesting BMW i3 story we decided to discuss was based around recent information from BMW of North America. Basically, while many people think of the i3 and most other electric cars as city cars, the i3 is proving very popular with drivers outside of big cities in Texas, South Florida, etc. This actually matches really well with research I learned about at EVS27 which argued that people living in small cities would benefit from electric cars more than people living in big cities. 4. Then there was this story: 800 HP Zombie 222 Electric Mustang Goes 174 MPH At The Texas Mile. Yes, 800 HP. Yes, 174 MPH. Yes, the Zombie is back. 5. And a really, really fun one: Chris's test drive of the Tesla Model S P85D. You've got to listen for that one.

Cadillac CEO & Electric Lineup, 2016 Chevy Malibu, Tesla 70D, & Tesla Pricing (Cleantech Talk #9)
This week's Cleantech Talk podcast was an especially interesting one, imho. The first story Chris DeMorro and I discussed was a particularly fun one because it's about the CEO of Cadillac, Johan de Nysschen, and Johan dropped several comments on Chris's article in response to the article. The short story is that Johan said in 2009 (when he was heading up Audi) that anyone who bought a Chevy Volt was an idiot. Now, he's the CEO of Cadillac, and the company is reportedly pulling the plug on the Cadillac ELR. I think you get the idea. Johan, however, jumped onto the Gas2 article (on a Sunday, no less) to defend himself and Cadillac's electric interest and ambitions. That led us into a discussion of the 2016 Chevy Malibu Hybrid, a car that is bigger than the Toyota Prius but has almost the same efficiency... and is largely based on the Chevy Volt drivetrain (despite not being a plug-in car). Of course, we got around to some Tesla news, talking about the Model S 70D, Tesla's current lineup, and Tesla's super controversial website pricing approach.
