Dr. Robert, born Robert Howard, is a British musician and lead vocalist of the band The Blow Monkeys. Emerging in the 1980s, the band found success with their distinctive blend of pop, soul, new wave. and Dr. Robert's socially conscious lyrics, all hallmarks of the band's soulful sound.

Their hits included "Digging Your Scene" and "It Doesn't Have to Be This Way" gained international acclaim.

Producer Alexx Antaeus was recently recognized with a Grammy for Best Reggae Album alongside Julian Marley for their collaboration on "Colors of Royal". Their work seamlessly blends reggae with electronic and experimental sounds, showcasing Antaeus's exceptional talent and creative vision.

Beyond this Grammy success, Antaeus has a diverse career producing for acclaimed artists and crafting evocative soundscapes as well as his own music - notably Byzantine Meditation. He was born in Patras in Greece but spent his teenage years in Athens before leaving for California when he was 17. His life has taken him from L.A., where he studied, became a DJ, and ended up with a studio in New York, and a chicken farm in Jamaica. It was on that island that he met many notable Jamaicans, including Julian Marley and after their initial collaboration on The Tide is High - a cover of Dancehall star of the 70s John Holt's track (the Blondie version is the one that become world famous), they decided to work on an album.

It was that album Colors of Royal that would win Alexx his first Grammy. And I'm guessing not his last...

Suzi Quatro, born Susan Kay Quatro on June 3, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, is a pioneering musician known for her influential contributions to rock and roll. She gained prominence in the 1970s as a bassist, singer, and songwriter, becoming one of the first prominent female musicians in the male-dominated rock genre. Quatro achieved international success with hits like "Can the Can," "48 Crash," and "Devil Gate Drive," which showcased her powerful voice and energetic stage presence. As a bassist, she challenged gender norms and inspired countless women to pursue careers in music. Quatro's impact extends beyond her solo career; she also had a successful acting career, notably portraying Leather Tuscadero on the TV show "Happy Days."

Suzi has remained active over the years, recently finally gaining a new audience. "No Control," her critically acclaimed studio album, which showcased her signature blend of rock and pop sensibilities, written mainly with her former husband Len Tuckey, and "The Devil in Me" in 2021, which was produced by her son RIchard Tuckey. In August 2023, Quatro released an album of duets with KT Tunstall entitled Face to Face.

She's currently gearing up for a new Australian tour, with dates from February 24th for a whole month across Australia. In Europe Suzi will be back on stage from May and then throughout the rest of the year - in Germany, Lithuania, the UK, and the Czech Republic.

Laurie Kaye’s memoir is the story of her rock radio-related early life leading up to John Lennon’s final interview. On December 8th 1980, Kaye co-conducted an interview with Lennon and Ono for RKO Radio at the Dakota in New York just a few hours before he was shot and killed.

But to be fair, to define Niki Haris and Donna De Lory only by their careers as backing vocalists for Madonna would do them a disservice. Both are distinguished artists in their own right, but certainly both would not deny that their work with Madonna helped their careers.

Niki Haris, born in 1962, is the daughter of the Grammy-nominated jazz pianist Gene Harris. Haris contributed her remarkable voice to some of Madonna's most iconic albums, including "Like a Prayer" and "Erotica," showcasing her versatility across various musical genres, from pop to jazz and gospel.

Donna De Lory, born in 1964, is a multifaceted artist and whose rich vocals and stage presence were integral to Madonna's sound, making her an indispensable part of the pop icon's musical journey. Her father worked closely with Jimmy Webb, and his work can be heard on some of the greatest tracks in pop history - Wichita Lineman, Pet Sounds amongst many other famous songs.

Beyond her work with Madonna, De Lory has explored diverse genres, incorporating world music and devotional chanting into her solo projects.

Ulf Ekberg, one of the founding members of Ace of Base along with Jonas, Jenny, and Malin or Linn Berggren, co-wrote most of the tracks on their debut album Happy Nation which included the hits All That She Wants and Wheel of Fortune, and which subsequently gave the band worldwide success.

At the height of their success in 1993, stories appeared in the Swedish press revealing his past as part of a neo-nazi band when he was between the ages of 13 and 16. He subsequently expressed his regret as to that involvement and has said many times that he does not agree with any extremist views.

In 1994, The Sign became the best-selling single in America. One morning that year back in Sweden, Jenny woke up at her parent’s home with a stalker holding a knife to her neck and she and her mother suffered a shocking attack.

This is Ulf’s story, his regret for his past, the effect on the whole of the band of that knife attack, and, of course, the story of the 3rd best-selling act to come out of Sweden - Ace of Base.

Following the break-up of The Bodysnatchers, Jennie Matthias got her big break in the 80’s all girl group The Belle Stars, later signed to Stiff Records, and hit the charts in 1982 with Iko Iko, a song which was to later again feature significantly in Jennie’s life, after it was used in the Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise film Rain Man.

In the UK, The Belle Stars released a further 7 singles after 'Iko Iko',

scoring their biggest hit with ‘Sign of The Times’.

This is Jennie’s story, which is deeper and more moving that the two paragraphs above could do justice to.

She witnessed her mother kill her sister in front of her.

She spent time in a children’s home

She was sent back to live with her mother, and again physically abused.

She became a pop star in The Belle Stars almost by accident

She became a heroin addict

She was in the States, trying to get off Heroin, when Iko Iko became a hit after bring used in the film Rain Man.

Her boyfriend of 7 years committed suicide. A moment that changed her life.

Today she works with disadvantaged children.

British singer songwriter Dee C. Lee rose to prominence as a session musician for Wham! and the Style Council. She had risen through the ranks of the Brit Funk movement of the late 70s, early 80s singing sessions for bands like Central Line.

Working with George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley raised her profile, and at one point, she had started singing with the Style Council when she became the first ever person to sing in two bands during the recording of one episode of Top of the Pops.

At first her solo career with CBS stumbled, but in 1985 she released See the Day, a song she had written at 18 years of age, and it became a massive hit in the UK.

She remained with the Style Council for many years, and her relationship with Paul Weller became official, and they have two children together.

Long separated, and after a period away from the spotlight she has returned to the music scene with a double A side single - Don’t Forget about Love & Be There in the Morning, and a forthcoming album.

Peter Straker - the man who was close friends with Freddie Mercury. ⁠

⁠When Peter Straker first recorded music he was the given the moniker of the Black Bowie. He was fresh from a career defining role as Hud in Hair - the musical that redefined the musical, outrageous, brave and trailblazing. His career as an actor, found him choosing roles which were audacious and bold - playing what we'd term today as a non-binary role in Girl/Boy - a film way ahead of its time. He was the narrator in the original Tommy musical, and much later in 2017 played the role that Tina Turner took in the film, the Acid Queen. His roles in the west end are numerous and has had a stellar career, his voice captivating.⁠

⁠Born in 1943 in Jamaica, Peter's recording career started in the late 1970s. He had just met Freddie Mercury with whom he was to become firm friends. Mercury helped him getting a recording deal with EMI and even co-produced with Roy Thomas Baker (who produced the first three Queen albums) This One's For Me, Straker's first album on the label.⁠

⁠His career as a recording artist stuttered and he reconsidered what was he doing. In the end he continued as a stage actor in countless musicals, and even in classical roles in the Bristol Old Vic and the National Theatre in London.⁠

⁠His close friendship with the legendary Queen frontman, Freddie Mercury, shines a light on the private side of Freddie - and gives an insight in that era, what Freddie's interests were, and humanises a person we often just see as an icon or idol - I found his insights fascinating.⁠

Scarlet Fantastic singer, Maggie K de Monde, reached the charts in the UK with her musical partner of the time - Rick P. Jones as Scarlet Fantastic. Well known for her sultry vocals and avant-garde fashion sense, they pushed musical boundaries and achieved success with 'No Memory', a track which was resurrected in the club scene of the 1990s.

Both Maggie and Rick were former members of Swans Way who had a hit in 1984 with Soul Train featuring the vocals of Robert Shaw.

In 2016, Maggie De Monde brought back Scarlet Fantastic and released Reverie, and later with John L. Walters of Landscape released the Beyond Pluto EP. In 2021, Scarlet Fantastic released the singles "Better Day and "Make Way For Love" which was produced by HiFi Sean Dickson formerly of The Soup Dragons (his interview is available on the channel) as tasters for a new album to be released in 2024.

Maggie's story is of success, disappointment, loss, standing up and starting again. She remains a positive uplighting person, and continues to make music today.

Her dynamic vocals and stage presence is what Kym became known for, and gained widespread recognition - one of our friends at MTV Europe during the late 1980s with her breakthrough single, "Useless (I Don't Need You Now)," which not only showcased her impressive vocal range but furhter established her as a prominent figure in the emerging house music scene, after her first Marshall Jefferson produced single 'Taste my Love' in 1987.

Later Kym worked with Soul II Soul and Robert Howard of The Blow Monkeys. Kym's unwavering passion for music continue to inspire new generations of artists, and she remains one of the greatest icons of the house music scene.

Artist Mark Wardel on David Bowie and Cracked Actor: The Fly in the Milk - a new book!

Mark Wardel has been a fan of David Bowie since Ziggy Stardust. He won the Art prize at school for his1974 painting of Bowie, and in 1979 he received a Berlin Air Mail letter from the man himself thanking him for a piece of Cracked Actor inspired fan art he had made.

For Mark, creating the hand-painted artworks for this book really was just a natural extension of all of that. The Fly in the Milk is the story of the making, broadcast and influence of Alan Yentob’s groundbreaking 1975 BBC documentary. Including interviews with many of those involved and access to internal BBC files from the time – this book is a celebration of Bowie captured during this crucial period.

The book features artwork by renowned British artist and longtime Bowie fan Mark Wardel, previously unseen live ‘74 shots of Bowie by David Stratford and words by Susan Compo and Mark Wardel.

The book is printed in colour on art-quality paper and will be available on its own or in a limited-edition box including a copy of the life mask shown being taken in Cracked Actor. Bowie/Isolar purchased two of Mark’s masks for inclusion in the official Bowie archive.

With Drake releasing Way 2 Sexy with rappers Future and Young thug as the first single from his sixth studio album, Certified Lover Boy, the track 'I’m Too Sexy' by Right Said Fred which Way 2 Sexy relies heavily upon has come back into focus. A worldwide hit in 1991, 'I’m Too Sexy' even topped the US charts. Written by Richard and Fred Fairbrass along with Rob Manzoli, it’s a song that has seeped deeper into our popular culture.

From Jay-Z's nod to the song on his 2001 The Blueprint, As part of the dialogue on The West Wing, and even used to see the Toyota Camry. But Drake's Me 2 Sexy has given the track a new lease of life, and in my opinion, another nod to the credibility the guys deserve for their songwriting. Australian cultural critic Lesley Chow, associate editor of the journal Bright Lights, has published widely over the past eighteen years, in Salon, Times Literary Supplement, The Quietus, The Age, Pop Matters, and CNN. She has appeared on numerous film juries including Venice and Berlin, and was President of the Critics’ Jury at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018.

Chris Huelsbeck remains one of the most important composers in the area of computer games music. He was influenced by Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, and other experimental electronic bands of the 1970s. His sounds for Turrican, Star Wars, and The Great Giana Sisters rank amongst his most famous compositions but he has in total written music for over 100 games in his career. Born in Kassel in Germany, he was brought up near Frankfurt. At 17, he won a competition for the 64er magazine for his composition Shades, leading to a job at Rainbow Arts in music production.

His story is about genius, talent, aspiration, and hard work. He currently lives in the States but remains an understated, humble individual who, through this interview, gives us an insight into how it is to compose music for computer games.

‘The legacy of Leigh Bowery, king of queer’, written by Dutch journalist Bamber Delver, looks at the the career of this outrageous shapeshifter of the 80’s/90’s.

Decades after his death, Leigh Bowery’s influence is omnipresent. From Alexander McQueen to Cirque du Soleil, from Lady Gaga to the drag queens of RuPaul. In this book 15 artists (inc. Le Pustra, Trevor Messersmith, Paola Idrontino, Luis Peralta, Saskia Kemperman, The Huxleys, Kat Joplin and Venus Envy) from around the globe admire his guts, his looks and fashion-philosophy which is nowadays called ‘queer’: no boundaries, no gender, no age, no sexuality, no restrictions of the human-form. Ann Holt, with whom Leigh travelled to London at 17, shares her memories. Leigh's sister Brownyn tells about her childhood with Leigh.

Also in the book is an interview from 1989 where Bamber interviewed the artist Leigh Bowery, as well as lots of never-seen-before photos of three of Leigh’s creations. The book presents several timelines, of Leigh’s life and afterlife: his legacy. Like the annual Aussie-party Bowerytopia and the theatre named after him: the Bowery Theatre, Australia (native country of Bowery). A variety of performers pay tribute to Leigh, verbally and visually. The book comes in different versions. The hardcover in print is a real treat.

Leigh died in 1994, at just 33, but his creative legacy is bigger than ever. This is the story.

Dr. Alban, the 7th biggest selling Swedish artist of all time, who has sold over 14 million records, and who is best known for his 90s hits, Hello Afrika, It’s my Life, and Sing Hallelujah is featured in this interview. He talks about growing up in Nigeria, and what life was like in a family of 10 siblings. He also recounts his move to Sweden, the night the DJ didn’t turn up in the nightclub where he was cleaning, and how that changed his life.

⁠Born in 1947 in post-war Germany, Wolfgang Flür made his name in the Kraftwerk, a band that was formed in Düsseldorf where he has spent most of his adult life. The last time I met him was in 1997 when he released his first post-Kraftwerk album with his band Yamo. His latest album, released last year, Magazine 1, is a masterpiece, a mixture of old and new, a commentary on today's world, and also that of post-war Düsseldorf, from Flür's perspective. In this interview, we talk about his own personal history, about his plea for pacifism in Say No! through the Wolfgang Borchert poem of the same name, and the track Birmingham, the home base of his main collaborator on this album, Peter Duggal. He also talks about how Trans Europe Express inspired him to make his track Night Drive, and his emotional final meeting with ex-Kraftwerk bandmate, Florian Schneider, in Düsseldorf where he continues to reside today.⁠

With four new projects on the horizon after last year's release of Electribe 101's second album after 30 years, it was time to catch up with Billie Ray Martin.

Her seminal hit was 'Your Loving Arms', a top ten hit in the UK, a massive club hit worldwide, and a song that remains one of the great dance anthems. Her story reads like a Hollywood movie, full of twists and turns. It even contains the obligatory 'singer looks for band' advert which leads to Electribe 101. But when a second album is rejected the band splits, Billie Ray Martin goes solo, and the album is forgotten for 30 years until it's released last year.

In this DEEP DIVE interview with Billie Ray Martin, she talks about her humble working-class beginnings growing up in the Reeperbahn district of Hamburg, moving to Berlin where she gains experience on-stage in bands, and her first impressions of when she first moved to London. Robin Scott, or as he's known - M, is a visionary, groundbreaking musician and producer who forever changed the landscape of popular music with his late 1970s hit POP MUZIK. As a pioneer of electronic music and a master of catchy synth-pop hooks, M's artistic contributions have resonated with audiences across the globe and continue to inspire generations of musicians.

Katharina Franck, the lead vocalist, and songwriter of the band Rainbirds, is known primarily for her distinctive voice and poetic songwriting. Rasmus Lindvall (sometimes spelled Lindwall) and Robert Wåtz made up the Swedish remixing, production, and scratching duo of Rob 'n' Raz, who came in prominence in the late 80s and scored international hits with Leila K. Got to Get and Rok the Nation charted all over Europe and in the US.

In the 90s they continued their success in Sweden with singer Lutricia McNeal and rapper David Seisay (D-Flex). In 1993, they hosted the show Clubhopping for ZTV in Sweden. Today they are no longer producing as a team, but Raz has continued on his own projects, including working with Papa Dee - the subject of another podcast - look out for that.

In 2022, THE JEREMY DAYS achieved the unexpected with an album on the German charts, the first in 27 years. LOUIS C. OBERLÄNDER is a keyboardist with The Jeremy Days, one of the bands that MTV Europe, where I worked, pushed back in the late eighties.

Influenced by Brit-Pop, The Jeremy Days were never identifiable as to which country they came from. They reached number 11 on the German charts in 1988 with Brand New Toy, and their first album reached number 18. For the next few years they remained successful in Germany, but their last album of that period, Punk by Numbers, flopped and the band pretty much went their separate ways.

In 2022, without Christoph Kaiser, their lineup still includes Dirk Darmstaedter, Louis C. Oberlander, Jörn-Christof Heilbut, and Stefan Rager, were back in the German charts with their 6th album Beauty in Broken, 27 years after their last album, and 33 years after their first eponymous album. Now usually when anyone interviews The Jeremy Days, they want to talk to singer Dirk Darmstaeder, who is a really nice guy. But I’ve chosen to interview Louis C. Oberlander, because his story is a little different from the others, and I’ve followed him with interest on social media over the years. Today, Louis lives in Los Angeles, this is his story.

To be back in the charts again, after a hiatus of nearly 40 years is truly beyond Belouis Some's wildest dreams. But it's true, his song IMAGINATION which was a hit in 1985, and from his debut album SOME PEOPLE only reached number 50 in the British charts on its first release, a re-release saw it rise to number 17, and now a remix in 2023 by producer Lee Rose, has seen it get to the top ten of the dance charts around Europe.

Joan Baez: The Last Leaf - written by Elizabeth Thomson, provides a picture of an artist who became a voice for social change.

And although she officially retired in 2021, a new documentary, I Am A Noise, which premiered recently at the Berlin Film Festival, and a book of upside-down drawings, Am I Pretty When I Fly? available in books shops, Joan Baez is once again garnering public acclaim.

In the Deep Dive interview which you can watch or hear through the link in the profile, Elizabeth explains how Joan Baez’s Quaker origins were to lead her into the fight for political and social justice, her friendship with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. which resulted in her being on the podium at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in August 1963, her musical success at just 19 years of age, and how she helped launch Bob Dylan’s career. It’s a loving biography of a woman who supported the downtrodden and disenfranchised and was clearly one of the most influential artists in the life of author Elizabeth Thomson, who had the honour of interviewing or just conversing with Baez herself over a period of four decades.

Alanas Chosnau is Lithuania's most famous singer. He's recently released an album of great electro-pop with Mark Reeder (listen to his podcast too - great cold war story). And he has lived ten lives in his one life.

His story reads like a Netflix movie. Born of a Lithuanian mother and Iraqi/Kurdish father, Alanas spent the first 8 years of his life in Baghdad in the late 70s. His mother died in his arms when he was 8 years old in a hospital in Cologne, and his father was back in Baghdad with his sister.

He moved to Lithuania and was brought up by his grandparents. He was an outsider at first, speaking only Arabic at first. Many years later, after being inspired by banned western music, he started a musical career.

Success came when Lithuania split from the Soviet Union. Then as his fame rose, and his musical career took out tragedy stuck - a car crash that left him in hospital for over a year.

Alanas returned to his band, and to greater success, eventually going solo and achieving ever greater fame and fortune.

A stroke of luck came at a film festival, a chance meeting with electro-producer Mark Reeder, and they started working together. Now on their second album - Life Everywhere -, Alanas sings in English - to Mark's music, a spectacular combination that has become one of my favorite albums.

This is Alanas' story - moving, emotional, and yet hopeful. We could have talked for many more hours because there was so much to talk about.

BISHI, born Bishi Bhattacharya, is a British singer-songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist, multimedia performer, producer, and composer - simply put a polymath. She was even a DJ having come through the London underground club scene.

The daughter of Bengali parents, BISHI's latest album, is Let My Country Awake, a title inspired by and using a poem of Rabindranath Tagore - another polymath and the cultural father of modern Bengal - in fact, her mother, Susmita is an acclaimed classical Indian singer, and also an expert in the music of Tagore.

For those who haven't heard of BISHI yet, this interview will definitely inspire your interest to hear her music.

With his celebration of one of the most influential bands of the 60s and 70s, journalist and musician Mike Evans has managed to bring together the story of the band, whose tumultuous history is as pioneering as their live performances, in his book - The Who - MUCH TOO MUCH.

This DEEP DIVE interview with author Mike Evans relates the story of The Who and explores their legacy. They were pioneers, and their attitude and aggressiveness of their performance was a prequel to Punk. Pop art inspired, their mod look was revolutionary then, as were Pete Townshend's ambitious operatic ventures with Tommy and Quadrophenia. The original line-up of vocalist Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle, and drummer Keith Moon became known for their legendary, equipment-smashing performances.

When Moon died on the 6th of September 1978, Townshend wanted the band to continue, and Keeny Jones joined the band over the following years. In 1983 they split but appeared together occasionally - e.g. for Live Aid, and a tour of Quadrophenia in 1996. In 1999 a full reunion started with Zak Starkey, Ringo Starr's son as their drummer. Since Entwistle's death in 2002, Daltrey and Townshend remain the only original band members.

His childhood was far from easy. He suffered parental abuse, & sexual abuse. He left home at 13. He was 14 when he first went to Studio 54, lying about his age to get in. He was among the most creative people of that era. Andy Warhol named him. He was friends with the Club Kids leader, Michael Alig, who later spent 15 years in jail for murder. He was ripped off by one manager and earned nothing.

Man Parrish's life is not for the faint-hearted. He's forthright, he doesn't hold back and this is the wildest ride of an interview I have ever experienced. ⁠In many ways, this interview is a fast ride through the 1980s.

Spandau Ballet's 'True', Imagination's 'Body Talk', Bananarama's 'Cruel Summer', are just some of the albums (and also the singles) that Tony Swain, one-half of the production duo Jolley and Swain produced during the early to mid-1980s.

In the mid-1970s, Tony's career started as a camera operator on The Muppets where he witnessed many star performances, maybe the strangest one, the Bowie-Bing Crosby duet 'Little Drummer Boy'.

But it was in 1981 that his production skills were first feted after producing Imagination's 'Body Talk', an album so new and fresh, that Frankie Knuckles cited one track - Burnin' Up as an influence on House Music. Even Madonna, whose career was about to make it through the wilderness, called him up, desperate to work with him.

But Tony's schedule didn't fit with hers. Instead, he, along with Steve Jolley went on to produce the first two albums with Imagination, and work with Spandau Ballet, Bananarama, and Alison Moyet.

Tony's story is of a man who has remained fascinated by technology, and its uses in creating new and inventive sounds. One of the reasons he believes is why the 80s remain attractive to music lovers today.

With the release of a new album - Number 8, Sam Brown has recorded an album of electronic music, something that seemed impossible when she lost her voice a few years ago.

In this interview, recorded when Sam was starting to record, she talked about her life, how she was brought up around music - and not a fan or her father's tastes, instead her mother's. Her first album and single Stop! brought her to the attention of fans all over Europe, but Sam was never comfortable with many aspects of fame, and as her sales faded she gained something far more important - the will to be a true artist.

In this Deep Dive interview, she talks about the loss of her mother and how that affected her, and also the loss of her voice.

Last time, we learned about the loss in her life, of her mother who died at the height of her fame, and in recent years of her voice, a devastating loss for a singer. Lanah P is new on the podcast this week. A pioneering LGBTQ Person of Colour, Lanah was born in Grimsby, an English fishing port. Often derided in earlier times with the words - It's grim in Grimsby, it clearly was for Lanah, who left at 17 for Manchester. There, Lanah became a drag artist, performed at the notoriously tough working men's clubs of the era, and quickly learned the art of putting down the hecklers.

Lanah's time in Manchester led to a friendship with Mark E. Smith of The Fall and ended up supporting the band on tour. It was one of many directions Lanah's career was to take.

Lanah came to my attention during the 1980s, through Leigh Bowery, and a pop single, Pistol in my Pocket. Produced by Pete Waterman the single became a hit on the Australian charts. Leigh dressed Lanah, and they became friends.

In Britain, Lanah's probably best known for the Comic Strip Presents film Eat the Rich, a role that came about after meeting actor and writer Keith Allen, the father of pop star Lily Allen.

There's more to Lanah's story, the stage, and film performances, but this hour gives an insight into the life of an LGBTQ pioneer who has led an uncompromising life through the bigotry and hate-filled 70s through to the more accepting days of today.

With David McAlmont's and Hifi Sean's album 'Happy Ending' just out, the time was ripe to interview one of the great vocalists of the current era.

The track 'Yes' from David and Bernard Butler (then of Suede), became the anthem of the Britpop era, but David, who started out in the band Thieves, was never going to be reduced to such trite classification - his career has seen him develop and change, with his constant groundbreaking collaborations.

P. P. Arnold, born Patricia Cole, is one of the world's greatest soul singers. Her career spans 7 decades, starting off as an Ikette with Ike & Tina Turner in 1965. Just over a year later she came to London as part of the Ike and Tina revue, supporting the Rolling Stones, and launched her own solo career on Andrew Oldham's (the then Stones manager) label. Her hits were The First Cut is the Deepest and Angel of the Morning. Her story, which you read in her best-selling autobiography ‘Soul Survivor’, is summed up by her at the end of the book "I’m a thriving soul survivor still going strong". And the woman who survived abuse at the hands of her first husband, and by Ike Turner, who had affairs with Mick Jagger, and Jimi Hendrix, and who experienced the highs and lows of the music business is indeed still going strong.

She has just released a seasonal single, ‘It Won’t Be Christmas Without You’, produced by Mark Taylor & Patrick Mascall for Metrophonic Production Ltd., and has a Phil Spector-type sound.

She has had a fascinating life, and this podcast is well worth a listen.

This week a look at DECADES Joy Division + New Order from John Aizlewood. ⁠

⁠Both bands were genre-defining, Joy Division consisting of Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris, proponents of dark and gloomy atmospheric music, and whose legendary status remains intact through Ian Curtis' suicide shortly before the release of Closer. And the band's remaining members were, with the addition of Gillian Gilbert, to become - New Order, with their dance-infused music which would make them one of the most influential bands of the 1980s. ⁠

⁠Author John Aizlewood relates the story of both bands in the podcast. His book DECADES Joy Division + New Order provides a fascinating insight into these influential bands, and the unique story of what was to start as a close friendship between Sumner and Hook, and end in its dissolution.⁠

In Shakespear’s Sister she was known as Marcella Detroit, but for most of her career, she has gone under the name Marcy Levy. It may surprise you to hear that Marcella, who sang lead vocals on their biggest hit ’Stay’, was already a successful songwriter before teaming up with Siobhan Fahey. She co-wrote the Eric Clapton classic ‘Lay Down Sally’ with George Terry in 1977, and sang backing vocals on ‘Wonderful Tonight’ amongst other tracks.

Her early work includes touring with Bob Seeger in the band Julia, singing backup vocals on his ‘Back in ’72’ album, and even playing support with her band Julia at a David Bowie gig. She has worked with numerous artists over the years, and after the success of Shakespear’s Sister, who eventually, and not on the best of terms, split, she continued with a solo career.

In 2019, Shakespear’s sister reformed, and Marcella and Siobhan were able to make peace again.

The interview is wide-ranging and provides a fascinating insight into a prolific songwriter and artist, who continues to make great music today.

ABBA at 50 by Carl Magnus Palm.

There probably isn't a better authority on ABBA than author and historian Carl Magnus Palm. His first book on ABBA was in 1994, and his eighth book is titled ABBA at 50, which is available now. ABBA at 50 is a fascinating read, and takes us through the whole ABBA story from the beginnings of each of the members, and takes the date for the band's formation as ABBA as 1972. His insights into one of the world’s best-selling bands, whose music is still universally enjoyed, are fascinating. The relationships, the personal backgrounds, the roles adopted within the band, the fallout, breakups, the comeback, and of course, their music including the current continuing success through musicals, films, and their digital avatar concert.

Even if you don’t like ABBA’s music, this interview provides a fascinating insight recounted with affection into the extraordinary lives of Benny, Björn, Anni-Frid (Frida), and Agnetha.

Chris Huelsbeck remains one of the most important composers in the area of computer games music. He was influenced by Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, and other experimental electronic bands of the 1970s. His sounds for Turrican, Star Wars, and The Great Giana Sisters rank amongst his most famous compositions but he has in total written music for over 100 games in his career. Born in Kassel in Germany, he was brought up near Frankfurt. At 17, he won a competition for the 64er magazine for his composition Shades, leading to a job at Rainbow Arts in music production.

His story is about genius, talent, aspiration, and hard work. He currently lives in the States but remains an understated, humble individual who, through this interview, gives us an insight into how it is to compose music for computer games.

Sue Tilley was a regular on the nightclub scene in London during the 1980s and early 1990s. She was friends with Leigh Bowery who became a fashion designer, artist, and muse, and Boy George described him probably the best as 'modern art on legs'. Leigh introduced Sue to artist Lucian Freud who he also sat for. One of the two paintings of her. titled Benefits Supervisor Sleeping - was at the time of its sale for 33.6 million dollars, the most expensive painting sold at an auction in history.

Sue was in many ways a witness to the fascinating culture of the 1980s, the wild times with Leigh Bowery, and eventually the attention of the world for being the muse of Lucian Freud. A fascinating, almost normal tale, of a woman who was happy to hang out with others who were making cultural history and who eventually became part of that herself.

On this week’s podcast, a look at Stockholm’s clubland between 1992 and 1995. It was an era in Stockholm that mirrored the Blitz era of London, a group of creatives coming together, the future famous designers, photographers, actors, musicians, and video and film directors.

Stefan Holm Mardo leads us through this era, his book No Limit; Stockholm Clubland 1992-1995 - the story of how Stockholm became cool was released towards the end of 2019. Helped by Mikael Bohman, a content creative and TV producer, the book is a homage to that time through photos and interviews with the Club Kids of that era, of which Stefan was one.

His interview is a fascinating look at how a scene can have an enormous impact on the creative output of a country. Stefan studied at Stockholm’s Beckmans School of Design, where he combined photography with graphic design.

He realized he had taken a huge amount of photos documenting the club scene back then, and set about trying to find the people in the photos. In all, he found 108 of the former club kids and 20 years later photographed for the book again.

Rusty Egan’s influence on New Romantic music is often overlooked and underplayed. He was the drummer in Rich Kids where he met Midge Ure, and after collaborating in a few other bands, he eventually formed Visage with him. He brought on board Steve Strange and Billy Currie who was in Ultravox with Midge joined. They were the seminal fashion/music band of the early 80s, combining a heavily styled look and electronic music. Their hits included ‘Fade to Grey’, ‘The Dancer’, and ‘Night Train’. When Visage was in their early phase, Rusty and Steve Strange opened 'Blitz’, the legendary London club which became the focal point of the New Romantic movement. Boy George worked on the coat check, Steve Strange on the door, and the later fashion and film director luminaries were the regulars, who used to dance to Egan’s choice of music that in itself had an impact on the music that was to come to prominence and be influential in Britain during that era.

Rusty is a fascinating, entertaining, and opinionated character. He doesn’t hold back on his views of that time, and his role in the music of the 1980s.

Suzi Quatro's self-titled album was released in 1973. Since then, she has sold 55 million records worldwide. Her singles, 'Can the Can', and 'Devil's Gate Drive' were among her massive hits in Britain, Europe, and Australia. It was almost 50 years ago that this solo rocker broke through the glass ceiling and opened the door for other female rockers. Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club), Joan Jett, and Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) all cite Suzi as an essential influence. She's still making albums today, her latest 'The Devil in Me' was released in 2021, and she continues to tour.

HiFi Sean (Sean Dickson) was the singer and main writer of The Soup Dragons, who charted in Europe in 1990 with 'I'm Free', an indie dance cover of the Rolling Stones hit. Later, in 1992, their track 'Divine Thing' was a top 40 hit on the Billboard chart in America. After their first album, 'This is Our Art', the band developed their sound in a more dance and less indie direction. Ten years after the band was founded in 1985, it disbanded. Sean Dickson came out as gay, an event that led to a breakdown, he formed The High Fidelity and. after DJ-ing already earlier in his life, became successful under the name HiFi Sean.

Today, he continues to DJ, and make music. HiFi Sean's album Ft. includes tracks by Crystal Waters, Yoko Ono, Dave Ball, Billie Ray Martin (check out her podcast), and David McAlmont, with whom he has already recorded an album that will be released next year.

His story is fascinating, and he's able to relate the events in his life with a healthy distance, as someone who is now a happily married gay man.

⁠On Electronic Music Cities week - today, Wolfgang Flür. He spent most of his adult life in Düsseldorf. ⁠

⁠Born in 1947 in post-war Germany, Wolfgang Flür made his name in the band Kraftwerk, a band that was formed in Düsseldorf. The last time I met him was in 1997 when he released his first post-Kraftwerk album with his band Yamo. His latest album, Magazine 1, is a masterpiece, a mixture of old and new, a commentary on today's world, and also that of post-war Düsseldorf, from Flür's perspective. In this interview, we talk about his own personal history, about his plea for pacifism in Say No! through the Wolfgang Borchert poem of the same name, and the track Birmingham, the home base of his main collaborator on this album, Peter Duggal. He also talks about how Trans Europe Express inspired him to make his track Night Drive, and his emotional final meeting with ex-Kraftwerk bandmate, Florian Schneider, in Düsseldorf where he continues to reside today.⁠

On Electronic Music Cities week - WestBam, was born in Münster but spent his adult life in Berlin. ⁠

German DJ WestBam talks about his early life in Münster and his unconventional upbringing. This episode is an insight into an artist born into a culturally privileged background, but who, like many children do, rebelled against his hippie-era parents. He also talks about how he developed a manifesto as a teenager which described the DJ as the star of the future, and how music played a role in bringing down the Berlin Wall.⁠

On Electronic Music Cities week - Mark Reeder, born and Manchester but moved to Berlin where he still lives.⁠

⁠Mark Reeder has become the go-to man for the Berlin music scene. He moved to the then-divided city from Manchester in 1978 and quickly ensconced himself in what was then the West Berlin scene. He played in various bands, arranged the legendary performance in the then East Berlin for Die Toten Hosen, a german punk band, and was the first person to get an East German band on the influential 80s TV show The Tube. He was the face of the documentary B-Movie about the Berlin music scene between 1979 and 1989, which led to him traveling around the world and giving lectures about Berlin. He is credited with launching the career of DJ Paul van Dyk and is still active as a musician, music producer, and remixer. His latest release, in March 2022, is with Alanas Chosnau, a Lithuanian singer and producer of Iraqi/Kurdish origin, and is titled Life Everywhere. His insights into Berlin are enlightening for anyone interested in the historical importance of that city during and after the Cold War, and the development of the Electronic music scene.⁠

Why have certain cities around the world developed as Electronic Cities?

This is the question that a new book, Electronic Cities aims to answer. ⁠ ⁠ ⁠This week on POP; The History Makers, I'll be looking at certain European Electronic Cities with one of the book's editors, Sébastien Darchen, who holds a Ph.D. in Urban Studies.⁠

⁠⁠Electronic Cities looks at the connection between music and planning policies and the development of urban electronic scenes in specific cities around the world. ⁠ ⁠ ⁠Other editors include Damien Charrieras, an Associate Professor at the School of Creative Media (City University of Hong Kong), and John Willsteed, an academic who was a former member of the Australian band - The Go-Betweens⁠. ⁠

⁠Contributions are from a combination of urban scholars and musicians - I'll just mention a few of the musicians - Rudi Esch, former bass player with Die Krupps. Erik Stein, the musician and writer, and Berlin-based musician and record producer Mark Reeder. ⁠

Jonas Åkerlund is one of the great music video directors of the modern era. He has worked with Madonna, Prodigy, Rammstein, Lady Gaga, and many more. Second Interview! Kevin Godley

Kevin Godley is one of the most creative and experimental people in the music industry. He was part of the 70s band 10cc which enjoyed world hits with I'm not in Love and Dreadlock Holiday. He went on, with partner Lol Creme to become Godley & Creme, not only a musical partnership but a video director pairing, who produced some of the greatest videos ever made e.g Herbie Hancock's Rockit.

This interview covers his life, 10CC, and his work with Lol Creme as an artist and as a video director, Their videos included Don't Give Up - Peter Gabriel, Don't stand so close to Me - Police, A View to A Kill - Duran Duran, and Victims - Culture Club. Kevin has remained at the center of creativity, always leading and never following. He's a fascinating man, with an engaging story.

He was the Music Video Director of 80's Icons He directed Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean', a-ha's 'Take on Me', Dire Straits' 'Money for Nothing', and Madonna's first video, 'Burning Up'.

Steve Barron was one of the shapers of the 1980s music video.

In this uncut version of the podcast, Steve tells his story of learning his craft on the job and almost getting fired when working with David Putnam and Prince Charles. His inside stories of Morten Harket, Madonna, and Michael Jackson are fascinating, and he gives his insights into MTV, the first video on MTV Europe from Dire Straits that he directed, and how that channel became a pop cultural phenomenon.

Steve Kilbey is one of the most prolific songwriters around, having released in the region of (roughly) 70 albums and 1,000 songs in his career. ⁠

This podcast interview concentrates on Steve's early life and the period in the 1980s where The Church achieved first Australian then worldwide success.

Of course, no interview with Steve is complete without talking about Under the Milky Way from the album Starfish which he wrote with his then-girlfriend, and mother of two of his children, Karin Jansson. That track remains one of the greatest tracks of the 80s, covered by numerous other artists.

George Michael: Portrait of an Artist is a wonderful, revealing, and moving documentary on iTunes and Amazon (if not in your territory yet it will come soon). Directed by Simon Napier-Bell who co-managed Wham! in the 1980s, he was responsible for their concert in China - the first by a western band.

The documentary features interviews with only those who knew George Michael or had worked with him. (Stevie Wonder, Stephen Fry, Rufus Wainright, Andrew Ridgeley, Sananda Maitreya (fmr Terence Trent D'arby), Tom Robinson, and George's long-time partner Kenny Goss. In the podcast, Simon talks extensively about George, his life, and his demons, in addition to giving us a portrait of his own life.

His songs are infused with house music and an element of fun, but when you talk to him, you realize there is much more to Mousse T. He’s affable, thoughtful, and intelligent. On July 23rd, 2022, Madeline Bell was 80 years old. She started her career in the mid-1950s and has since become one of the best-loved singers to have come out of the UK. She was a backing singer for Dusty Springfield, and as a session musician has been featured on tracks where she worked with the likes of Joe Cocker, Elton John, the Stones, and even John Lennon. Her distinctive voice took her to the top of the charts with Blue Mink, and as part of the French disco combo Space. She still tours regularly and played at Ronnie Scott’s in London just last month. She’s a powerhouse of talent, who has an incredible life story. And this is 'I’m Gonna Make you Love Me', the Dee Dee Warwick cover, made famous by Diana Ross and the Supremes. Bell’s version peaked at Number 34 in the States in 1968. ⁠

Between 1985 and 2002 the Scottish band Del Amitri released 6 studio albums, five of which charted in the UK. Their biggest single 'Roll to Me' reached the Billboard top 10 in 1995. After 2002, when the band split, the lead singer and main songwriter, Justin Currie went on to release 4 solo albums. Not long ago the band reformed, with both Currie and Iain Harvie, and released their 7th studio album, Fatal Mistakes. And since then they've embarked on a US and European tour.

I caught up with the charismatic singer, Justin, and talked to him about childhood, the early days of Del Amitri, a formative trip to the States, the split of the band, their reunion, and what being Scottish means to him.

Back in 1989, when I was at MTV Europe, Papa Dee had been labeled as the next break-out artist from Sweden. His early career was full of promise, from execs who were determined to make him the next big thing in Europe and the States. But although he didn’t reach the international career heights of Shaggy, whom Clive Davis saw him as, he still maintained a long and successful career in Sweden, and the maturity to choose the music he wanted to do.

This is a very human story. Born in Sweden to a Swedish mother and a Ghanaian father who left when he was very young, music became the compensation for his father’s departure. He’s had success, experienced the highs and lows of fame, and even been falsely accused of grave assault. Yet music, whether pop, dancehall, reggae, soul, or funk, has clearly been a motivator, and compensator, and provided a backbone to his life.

I liked Papa Dee back in 1989, and listening through his catalog of music for this interview was an immense pleasure, and it was great to see that he’d lost none of his humor, humility, and charm from over 20 years ago.

A milestone in sampling culture, Pump Up The Volume started as an original basic idea by Ivo Watts-Russell. He was the label boss of the two bands that he brought together to make the track, Colourbox - an electro outfit and A. R. Kane, an indie band. But what made the track a phenomenal success were the samples, scratching, and effects that C.J Mackintosh and Dave Dorrell provided.

Dave Dorrell is the subject of this podcast. He's one of the most influential pop-cultural figures of the last 30 years, not only for the era of modern dance and electronic music that Pump up the Volume ushered in, His contribution is far deeper. He started a fanzine at 15 and interviewed the Sex Pistols. He was partly responsible for the development of early 80s warehouse club culture, wrote for the NME and The Face, has been a producer and remixer of a number of well-known artists, has been manager of the Pet Shop Boys and Bush, and is an Art Curator and Artist. He is even involved in a sustainable farm outside Berlin, which he believes is the future of farming - the new pop culture.

Two guys, Al Mackenzie - a DJ, and Peter Cunnah, with a more popular approach to music. They meet in the club that Al plays in and start writing and recording tracks which would eventually be under the band name D: Ream.

Their first single 'U R the best thing' is a club hit, and their second release 'Things can only get better' reaches number 24 in the UK charts. Then Al Mackenzie left the band. But it doesn't end there. Peter works on the tracks and gets the song to the top ten of the charts in ten countries.

Even though both have a different musical focus, they have a strong connection, and eventually, Al returns to D:Ream.

This is a story of twists and turns, friendship, and above all good music.

My personal memories of an interview with Brian Wilson, the singer, songwriter, and co-founder of the Beach Boys. Brian is known as the person who threw away the rule book and changed production and recording forever.

Season 3 starts on POP; The History Makers with Man Parrish. With hits like Hip Hop, Be Bop (Don't Stop), and Boogie Down (Bronx), his stripped-down early hip-hop/electro music was to prove influential, and his single Male Stripper with Man 2 Man was to be his biggest hit.⁠

He suffered parental abuse, & sexual abuse. He left home at 13. He was 14 when he first went to Studio 54, lying about his age to get in. He was among the most creative people of that era. Andy Warhol named him. He was friends with the Club Kids leader, Michael Alig, who spent 15 years in jail for murder. He was ripped off by his manager and earned nothing. His life is not for the faint-hearted. He's forthright, he doesn't hold back and this is the wildest ride of an interview I have ever experienced. ⁠This is a fast ride through the 1980s with Man Parrish.

Dr. Alban, the 7th biggest selling Swedish artist of all time, who has sold over 14 million records, and who is best known for his 90s hits, Hello Afrika, It’s my Life, and Sing Hallelujah is featured in this interview. He talks about growing up in Nigeria, and what life was like in a family of 10 siblings. He also recounts his move to Sweden, the night the DJ didn’t turn up in the nightclub where he was cleaning, and how that changed his life.

And I ask him about the Swedish maestro producer, the late Denniz PoP with whom he worked, who also created the hit sound of Ace of Base and the Backstreet Boys and who sadly died in 1998.

Martin Glover aka Youth, who is probably still best known for his time in Killing Joke, is one of the most prolific producers of our time. He has worked with Durga McBroom in the band Blue Pearl, with Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Erasure, INXS, and Paul McCartney.

Youth has been at the forefront of new styles, from post-punk to trance, ambient, and dub. In Part One of this two-part interview, I talk to him about his childhood.

Part Two is a continuation of the interview with Louis C. Oberlander, keyboardist with The Jeremy Days. If you're not from Germany you may not have heard of the band, but their music is Brit-pop influenced, and they were one of the bands that MTV Europe, where I worked, pushed.

They reached number 11 in the German charts in 1898 with Brand New Toy, and their first album reached number 18. For the next few years they remained successful in Germany, but their last album of that period, Punk by Numbers, flopped and the band pretty much went their separate ways.

Today, without Christoph Kaiser, their lineup still includes Dirk Darmstaedter, Louis C. Oberlander, Jörn-Christof Heilbut, and Stefan Rager, and they are back on the German charts with their 6th album Beauty in Broken, twenty-seven years after their last album, and 33 years after their first eponymous album. This is the second and final part of his interview.

An interview with Louis C. Oberlander, keyboardist with The Jeremy Days. They were one of the bands that MTV Europe, where I worked, pushed. That was back in the late eighties.

Influenced by Brit-Pop, The Jeremy Days were not identifiable as to which country they came from. They reached number 11 on the German charts in 1988 with Brand New Toy, and their first album reached number 18. For the next few years they remained successful in Germany, but their last album of that period, Punk by Numbers, flopped and the band pretty much went their separate ways.

Today, without Christoph Kaiser, their lineup still includes Dirk Darmstaedter, Louis C. Oberlander, Jörn-Christof Heilbut, and Stefan Rager, and they are back on the German charts with their 6th album Beauty in Broken, 27 years after their last album, and 33 years after their first eponymous album. Now usually when anyone interviews The Jeremy Days, they want to talk to singer Dirk Darmstaeder, who is a really nice guy. But I’ve chosen to interview Louis C. Oberlander, because his story is a little different from the others, and I’ve followed him with interest on social media over the years. Today, Louis lives in Los Angeles, this is his story.

Marian Gold’s career stretches 38 years. 8 studio albums with Alphaville, a number of compilation releases, and two solo albums. But it was the first two Alphaville albums that had enormous success, not only just within Germany and the German-speaking territories, but worldwide and their hits Big in Japan, Forever Young, Dance with Me, and Sounds like a Melody became household staples.

Marian has been the one constant in Alphaville, always looking for a new challenge, and recently he found it with the German film Orchestra Babelsberg. A double album of tracks spanning his career has been re-recorded, some in a completely new style, and was released on September 23rd of 2022. In Part One of this interview, Marian talks about his upbringing and the inspiration of Berlin, and the development of Alphaville in Münster.

Ulf Ekberg, one of the founding members of Ace of Base along with Jonas, Jenny, and Malin or Linn Berggren, co-wrote most of the tracks on their debut album Happy Nation which included the hits All that she wants and Wheel of Fortune, and subsequently gave the band worldwide success.

At the height of their success in 1993, stories appeared in the Swedish press revealing his past as part of a neo-nazi band when he was between the ages of 13 and 16. He subsequently expressed his regret as to that involvement and has said many times that he does not agree with any extremist views.

In 1994, The Sign became the best-selling single in America. One morning that year back in Sweden, Jenny woke up at her parent’s home with a stalker holding a knife to her neck and she and her mother suffered a shocking attack. This is Ulf’s story, his regret for his past, the effect on the whole of the band of that knife attack, and, of course, the story of the 3rd best-selling act to come out of Sweden - Ace of Base.

Rasmus or 'Raz' Lindwall, as half of the production team Rob n Raz, scored an international hit with Leila K in the late 80s. Got to Get charted in 1989 all over Europe and the US. They both worked extensively as remixers, and on production and scratching. Their careers have included work with Papa Dee. Raz is still producing music - amongst others with Papa Dee, and as Rob'n'Raz DLC with singer Lutricia McNeal and rapper David Seisay (D-Flex). In 1993, they hosted the show Clubhopping for ZTV in Sweden. Today they are no longer producing as a team, but Raz has continued on his own projects. In Part One he talks about his early DJ-ing, the DMC competitions, and the beginning of working with Leila K.

In Part Two of this interview with Marcus Vere from Living in a Box, he talks about what happened after 1990, when Richard Darbyshire left, and the band split in accordance with the contract they had signed in 1985. In 2004, they reformed for one gig with the original lineup. But this was not to be. And over a decade later, Tich and Marcus returned to the stage with a new vocalist, Kenny Thomas. This year they are out on the road again, not with Kenny as he had other commitments but with Bryan J. Chambers, who has sung for Pink Floyd, and Beverly Knight, and who has been a backing singer for Prince, Marc Almond, and Grace Jones. The story of the band, and particularly Marcus Vere’s story, is intriguing, as he has become successful with Kids Trucks TV, a youtube channel inspired by his own children.

Living in a Box, with Marcus Vere on keyboards and synthesizers, Anthony Tich Critchlow on drums, and Richard Darbyshire on vocals, formed in 1985. and released their first single, also titled Living in a Box in 1987. That track reached the top 5 in the Uk and the top 40 on the Billboard charts.

During my early days at MTV, their songs were played on heavy rotation. They released two successful albums and a string of hits singles. But in 1990, when Darbyshire left, the band split in accordance with the contract they had signed in 1985. In 2004, they reformed for one gig with the original lineup. But this was not to be. And over a decade later, Tich and Marcus returned to the stage with a new vocalist, Kenny Thomas. This year they are out on the road again, not with Kenny as he had other commitments but with Bryan J. Chambers, who has sung for Pink Floyd, and Beverly Knight, and who has been a backing singer for Prince, Marc Almond, and Grace Jones. The story of the band, and particularly Marcus Vere’s story, is intriguing, He might call it luck, the right place right time, but in the end, it’s also the story of a combination of great songwriting and the right talent.

Mark Redder has become the go-to man for the Berlin music scene. He moved there from Manchester in 1978 and quickly ensconced himself in what was then the West Berlin scene. He played in various bands, arranged performances in the then East Berlin for Die Toten Hosen, a german punk band, and was the first who managed to get an East German band on the influential 80s TV show The Tube. He was the face of the documentary B-Movie about the Berlin music scene between 1979 and 1989, which led to him traveling around the world and giving lectures about Berlin. He is credited with launching the career of DJ Paul van Dyk, and is still active as a musician, music producer, and remixer. His latest release, in March 2022, was with Alanas Chosnau, a Lithuanian singer and producer of Iraqi/Kurdish origin, and is titled Life Everywhere. His insights into Berlin are enlightening for anyone interested in music and the historical importance of that city during and after the Cold War.

In Part 1 we talk about his route from Manchester to Berlin and his early years in what was then a divided city.

Born in 1947 in post-war Germany, Wolfgang Flür made his name in the band Kraftwerk. The last time I met him was in 1997 when he released his first post-Kraftwerk album with his band Yamo. His latest album, Magazine 1, is a masterpiece, a mixture of old and new, a commentary of today's world from Flür's perspective. In the first part of this two-part interview, we talk about his own personal history, about his plea to pacifism in Say No! through the Wolfgang Borchert poem of the same name, and the track Birmingham, the home base of his main collaborator on this album, Peter Duggal.

Record producer, film composer, DJ, and judge on Deutschland Sucht den Superstar - Germany’s version of Pop Idol, Mousse T. has achieved worldwide success with his written and produced tracks Horny '98 and Sexbomb, his collaboration with Tom Jones. His songs are infused with house music and an element of fun, but when you talk to him, you realize there is much more to the Mousse T. He’s affable, thoughtful, and intelligent. And in this first part of the interview, I talk to him about his early life, his Turkish heritage, and his route into music.

Al Green is often referred to as ‘The Last of the Great Soul Singers’. In the 1970s the masterpieces he released, like ‘Let’s stay together’ and ‘Tired of being alone’, were in part due to record producer and vocal mentor Willie Mitchell, who signed him to his label Hi Records.

Mitchell's influence stretches from the Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, Wu-Tang Clan, to Kanye West. Back then, Green enjoyed seven consecutive million-seller hits. But slap-bang in the middle of his success, he was ‘born again’, brought on after his girlfriend, Mary Woodson White, poured a load of grits (boiled cornmeal) over him, causing severe burns before committing suicide.

She was furious he wouldn’t marry her despite the fact that she was already married. By '76, Green had become a Reverend, and in '78, when his commercial success faded, he started recording Gospel music for which he won eight Grammys over a period of a decade.

In 1988, he returned to his soul roots and alongside Annie Lennox, recorded ‘Put a little love in your heart’. A year later he released ‘The message is Love’ with Arthur Baker. By the time I met Reverend Al Green at the Full Gospel Tabernacle in '93 for an MTV News at Night special on Memphis, he had released the widely underrated album, ‘Don’t Look Back’, which featured the song ‘Love is a beautiful thing’.

He played and sang for us. That particular song starts with the words ‘This is what I believe’ and towards the end references his greatest hits. When I asked him about his own influences, he cited Elvis Presley. He told me that Elvis was the forerunner, not only for him but for all others of his era. Green had bought all Elvis’s music and told me that he had met him in the urinal of a Beale Street club in Memphis, where they instantly bonded. Later, in an often repeated quote, he has said he would have shaken Elvis’s hand but it just didn’t seem appropriate at the time!

After chart success in the 1970s, Jimmy went back to session playing, but by the late 80s, he was desperate to get his own band together. Finally, it happened and Londonbeat hit the top of the Billboard charts in February of 1991 with I've been thinking about you. Jimmy realized a dream that he had been working for his whole life. In Part Two of this interview, Jimmy talks about how the record company wanted changes, and how that success changed everything. We also talk about one of the great parties that neither of us has a great memory of!

When Londonbeat hit the top of the Billboard charts in February of 1991, Jimmy Helms realised a dream that he had been working for his whole life. He was approaching his 50th birthday. He had achieved chart success earlier, in 1973, with ‘Gonna make you an Offer’, a song inspired by the most famous phrase from the Godfather movie - I’m gonna make you an offer you can’t refuse. Helms has one of the greatest soul voices ever, today in his eightieth year, he continues to tour as Londonbeat. In Part One of this interview - from Münster to Berlin.

German DJ WestBam talks about his early life in Münster and his unconventional upbringing. This episode is an insight into an artist born into a culturally privileged background, but who, like many children do, rebelled against his hippie-era parents. Part One - On the way to 'I'm Too Sexy'.

With Drake releasing Way 2 Sexy with rappers Future and Young thug as the first single from his sixth studio album, Certified Lover Boy, the track 'I’m Too Sexy' by Right Said Fred which Way 2 Sexy relies heavily upon has come back into focus. A worldwide hit in 1991, 'I’m Too Sexy' even topped the US charts. Written by Richard and Fred Fairbrass along with Rob Manzoli, it’s a song that has seeped deeper into our popular culture.

From Jay-Z's nod to the song on his 2001 The Blueprint, As part of the dialogue on The West Wing, and even used to see the Toyota Camry. But Drake's Me 2 Sexy has given the track a new lease of life, and in my opinion, another nod to the credibility the guys deserve for their songwriting. In this podcast, Richard and Fred Fairbrass talk about their lives pre-Sexy and how that track has stood the test of time. Note - I do not talk to them about their stance on the Covid vaccine - this podcast is about music!

From punk to new wave and beyond. This was followed by three albums, Changing Places (1983), Joined up Writing (1984), and Hopeless Cases (1987), where she was joined by David Harrow, author of the music and producer. The singles, Sleeper in Metropolis, and Our Darkness became staples of the 1980s, and remain two of the great tracks of that era. He used his experimental talents as part of the 70s band 10cc which enjoyed world hits with I'm not in Love and Dreadlock Holiday. He went on, with partner Lol Creme to become Godley & Creme, not only a musical partnership but a video director pairing who produced some of the greatest videos ever made e.g Herbie Hancock's Rockit. In Part One of this interview, he recounts his early days, how he got into music, and the role his art teacher paid up until his time with 10cc.
