Baietan, also referred to as Etan, is located on the Pearl River south of Shamian Island in Guangzhou City, China. It is the intersection of three sections of the Pearl River-Guangzhou River, namely the West Channel, the Front Channel, and the Back Channel. The ancients called it "giant dip". This section of the river has a wide surface, deep water, fast currents, vast waves, and beautiful scenery. At night, the breeze blows refreshingly and the moonlight shines brightly. "Moonlight over Etan" was rated as one of the eight scenic spots in Yangcheng in 1963. The Guangzhou Municipal People's Government usually holds fireworks displays here.
It is said that during the Zhengtong period of the Ming Dynasty, several natural disasters occurred in the South China Sea of Guangdong, making people's lives difficult. In September of the thirteenth year of Zhengtong (1448), a young man named Huang Xiaoyang launched an uprising and gathered more than 10,000 people to attack Guangzhou. In June of the following year, the rebel army defeated the officers and soldiers who came to suppress it on the river surface of Baietan. Legend has it that during this battle, two big white geese that often cruised on the river guided the rebels. Later, due to being outnumbered, the uprising was suppressed by the Ming government, and Huang Xiaoyang also died in the battle. Folk legend has it that at the critical moment when Huang Xiaoyang retreated to the Pearl River, two big white geese emerged from the center of the river, carrying Huang Xiaoyang on their backs, and swam towards the center of the river, disappearing in the heavy fog. From then on, people called this section of the Pearl River Baietan based on this legend.
Baietan is the widest and deepest river on the Pearl River flowing through Guangzhou. It has been an important transportation waterway for Guangzhou's external trade since ancient times. During the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, thousands of flower boats gathered in the Baietan area, which was very lively. The flower boat is elegantly and beautifully decorated, with birds singing and dancing on the boat, and music playing all night long.
During the Qing Dynasty, it was under the jurisdiction of Shunde Xieying (garrison), Nanhai County, Guangzhou Prefecture.
After the outbreak of the Second Opium War, Shamian was classified as a British and French concession, and the Baietan area became a harbor for foreign ships to berth for shelter.
After 1949, there were still many Dan people living on boats in Baietan. In the 1950s, Premier Zhou Enlai decided to allocate funds from the central government to build residential buildings and gradually arranged for Dan people to settle ashore. After the reform and opening up in the 1980s, due to the construction of the White Swan Hotel, White Swan Lake has since been used as a place to set off fireworks during the Spring Festival.
