The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred shortly after 21:30 local time, was located about 50 km north of the city of Taitung.
The earthquake occurred at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
The tremors were felt in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.
According to eyewitnesses, the buildings swayed during the impact.
"The shaking lasted about 40 seconds, the ground moved left and right."
At this stage, local media are not reporting any injuries or damage.
Taiwan and its environs regularly suffer from earthquakes due to its location near the junction of two tectonic plates.
The island does not issue a tsunami warning for earthquakes below magnitude 7.
