Roger Federer has announced that his final professional tournament will be the 2022 Laver Cup in London.

The tournament will take place from Friday 23rd September to Sunday 25th September.

The three-day Laver Cup will be staged at the O2 Arena in Greenwich.

On Thursday, Federer stated that he is retiring from tennis at the age of 41.

The 20-time grand-slam champion has been struggling with a knee problem for the last three years and has decided now is the time to step away.

He has not played a competitive match since losing to Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last summer.

Federer will play in next week's Laver Cup in London, the Ryder Cup-style competition, that was his brainchild, but will then leave the professional game.

The Laver Cup is an international indoor hard court men's team tennis tournament between Team Europe and Team World. The tournament is named after Australian tennis legend Rod Laver and it was first held in 2017.

In May 2019, the Laver Cup became an officially sanctioned ATP Tour event and it will be Federer's last one on the Tour.

The format pits teams of six against each other. Three players are automatically enrolled due to ATP rankings. The other 3 are captains picks. There are 12 matches played over three days. Nine singles matches and three doubles games.

Each match victory on day 1 is worth one point, on day 2 two points, and on day 3 three points. The first team to claim 13 points wins the tournament.

Each player takes the court once or twice for singles, with at least four of the six taking part in doubles. All matches are played as best-of-three, with a 10-point tiebreaker if play goes to a third set.

The two confirmed line-ups for the 2022 edition are as follows:

Team Europe:

Captain: Bjorn Borg.

Casper Ruud, Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer.

Team World:

Captain: John McEnroe.

Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Diego Schwartzman, Francis Tiafoe, Alex de Minaur, Jack Sock.
