Director Alfonso Cuarón had an idea to have the main characters wear everyday clothes more often than their Hogwarts uniforms to show more of their personalities. This decision was made to bring a greater sense of realism to the wizards' school, and to make the characters feel more relatable and individualistic, instead of just being identified by their school uniforms. Additionally, Alfonso Cuarón gave the rest of the Hogwarts students permission to wear their uniforms any way they wanted to, this decision led to some students wearing the uniforms very neatly, while others have the shirts and ties hanging out, giving them their own individual personalities and attitudes.
