Today I'm joined by multi-certified trainer Sylvia Wes!
My name is Sylvia Wes, I have been a certified dog trainer for 7 years. I am currently working as an early developmental and reactivity/ aggression specialist. While I am a certified professional dog trainer, the majority of my cases revolve around behavior consulting and modification.
I have been working with dogs in a professional capacity for over a decade. I got my start in the rescue sector, running a huge no kill center in DTLA with over 200 animals in our care. I forayed into pet care as a special needs and geriatric care specialist before diving into the world of dog training.
I am passionate about science based, positive reinforcement training. I currently hold two certification and am seeking a new certification in behavior consulting. I believe in the power of individual learning, radical consideration and choice based learning models to help propel your relationship with your dog to next level.
Let me help guide you into a new world of better communication, meeting your dog's needs and human animal bonding to last your dog's lifetime. Anything is possible with though the power of love, patience and science.

Dr. Janet Cutler is a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist (CAAB) and Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA). She completed her MSc and PhD at the University of Guelph, specializing in the areas of ethology (the science of animal behavior), animal welfare, and epidemiology.
Janet helps people with dog and cat behavior problems, with virtual consultations to develop personalized behavior modification and training programs to suit the household and the pet. She is a Fear Free Certified Professional, and when not seeing clients teaches veterinary and undergraduate students about behavior, does behavior assessments for shelters, and writes about behavior and training science.
She spends time at home in the country with her three daughters, two Australian Shepherds, cat, and supportive husband.
Darcey Kearney is a highly motivated individual who has dedicated herself to improving the lives of dogs and their owners through positive reinforcement training. As the founder of Up Dog LA LLC, a private dog and puppy training provider based in Burbank, California, Darcey has spent the last several years focused on her Board & Train program. This program, located in her own home, allows her to work closely with puppies as young as eight weeks old and provide them with a transformative foundation that will last a lifetime. She then works with the parents to ensure that everyone is in harmony.
Before the pandemic, Darcey’s Up Dog LA was a premiere full-service pet sitting, dog walking, and training service with seven staff members for over eight years. Prior to that, she was one of the most requested walker/sitters for one of the largest dog walking/pet sitting businesses at that time, where she also handled dog’s with special needs physically and behaviorally.
When Covid hit, Darcey made the difficult decision to dial back the business and refocus on her true passion of helping dogs and their guardians. During the lockdown, she started the Board & Train program out of a need that was seen in the community with what dogs were lacking. She also began hosting a Puppy Social every Sunday. Darcey’s 10 years of hands-on training, coupled with her accreditation from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, has put her in the perfect position to help endless dog families learn how to be the best dog parents by understanding their dog’s needs better.
Darcey uses science-based, proven methods to help countless dog owners live happier, more productive lives with their furry companions. She emphasizes the importance of meeting their dog’s needs and how doing so can help relieve some of the undesirable behaviors that bring clients to her. Darcey’s deep connection with animals began at the age of eight when she started competing in equestrian events in her home state of Idaho. Her experiences with abused show horses led her to the professional rehabilitation of these sensitive beings when she was just 16, and she became known around town for her ways with them.
Although she has had a dynamic 23-year career as a professional DJ and music producer, Darcey left that behind when she moved from San Francisco to LA a few years ago to pursue a career in video editing. She began caring for dogs to make ends meet, and before long, she had so many four-legged clients that she didn’t have time to find her “dream job” Nonetheless, she found her calling in working with humankind’s best friend.

Shalina works as a dog trainer in Toronto, Canada. After completing the intensive
internship program at When Hounds Fly, she then earned her CPDT-KA certification.
Although her love of dogs began in childhood, her passion for science and psychology was born in university. After graduating with her degree in Psychology, she began to dive into animal psychology and learning theory. Keeping up with the latest "dog science" is what drives her to improve to become as effective and humane as possible.
After spending some time on dog training social media, it became apparent to her how critical it was to begin tackling some of the misinformation on Instagram and TikTok. She loves creating educational content on social media to help pet parents navigate the dog training world. Online advocacy work will continue to be a huge priority for her.

Briahna Hendey has a Masters of Science in Environment and Natural Resources (Environmental Social Science), and an undergraduate background in Biology and Psychology. She is very interested in how well-being and sustainable lifestyles intersect, and in turn, helping people live more mindful, connected lives. As an avid dog lover herself, she believes that dogs and sustainability aren't mutually exclusive. After rescuing her own dog Boba, she was shocked at the absence of sustainability information in the dog community, so she took it upon herself to help provide it. Some of her previous work experience includes an educational role at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, which reaffirmed her passion for consent-based, positive reinforcement training for all species

This is possibly the most important topic in Dog Training today. Do Methods Matter? YES! We break down why using aversive techniques is damaging to your relationship with your dog and to their very welfare. I'm joined by Dr Karen London, who breaks it down for us!

You can get a good dog from anywhere! My guest Trish McMillan says good (and bad) dogs can come from any source; shelters, rescues, and breeders. But many have vilified purchasing dogs from breeders so it can be hard to find good information about what makes one ethical. Listen in to learn the red flags that should make you run for the hills, and what to expect from an ethical breeder who’s breeding behaviorally sound puppies. Click the link in my bio to listen, or find it on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you like to listen!

This is a delicate issue, and it was difficult to cut our conversation to 30 minutes! Even with adding a part 2 (next episode we'll talk about choosing a good Breeder if you go that route) we couldn't cover everything. But we tackle the reasons why Rescues turn people down, why "No Kill" has done more harm than good, and some of the ways Rescues could help more families adopt pets and help those pets succeed in those homes!
My guest is Trish McMillan, MSc, CPDT-KA, CDBC, ACCBC
Trish McMillan holds a Master of Science degree in animal behavior, and is a certified professional dog trainer, certified dog behavior consultant and associate certified cat behavior consultant. She has been involved in the animal rescue and sheltering world since the mid-1990’s, starting out as a volunteer and working her way up to director of animal behavior. She worked for the ASPCA for nearly eight years; first as Director of Animal Behavior at their NYC shelter, then as a behaviorist on their field team, helping assess and rehabilitate dogs from cruelty cases, dogfighting and hoarding situations, then she joined the Shelter Research and Development team.
Trish currently does animal behavior consulting near Asheville, North Carolina, working with dogs, cats and horses. Her farm, Pibble Hill, is home to a happy herd of animals of five species. Trish speaks and consults nationally and internationally on animal sheltering issues, dog, cat, and horse behavior, dog aggression, and defensive handling. Her online shelter dog behavior mentorship has helped students from around the world apply best practices at their respective shelters and rescues.
Most of our talk about Behavioral Euthanasia didn't make it into the episode - it's not something to really cover in passing. But if you've had a pet who lost their life to their own behavior, Trish is part of an amazing group on Facebook, Losing Lulu. This group is ONLY for people who've lost pets to Behavioral Euthanasia, not old age, accident, illness or any other way. If that's you, I encourage you to apply for membership.
Find more about Trish at her website below! She also recommended this form, Adopters Welcome, for any Rescue looking to implement what she refers to as "Starting from Yes"!
Also cut from the episode was a discussion about the legal aspects of adoption. I mentioned a lawsuit filed in California against a rescue for placing a dog that turned out to be dangerous. Trish mentioned another California law, Hayden Act.

Joining me today to talk about Noise Aversion (Fear of Thunderstorms, Fireworks, Trash Trucks etc) is Gwen Podulka, Owner of Dog Trained! Gwen does a little of everything over here at Dog Trained. She works with her awesome co-Trainers to build, learn, and teach you the most effective training methods possible. She will also be that voice you get when you call the office during office hours and you can hear the joy in her voice as she helps you choose your classes.
Gwen landed in the Dog Training world more than 20 years ago after a great stint managing bookstores. She looked around and said “I love this hobby of training my own (at the time) Deaf Dalmatian” and soon moved out to California to train service dogs and advance her own teaching skills. You can meet Gwen at any Play and Train date on the weekends and she will be teaching the in person Reactive Dog 2.0 class in early 2021.
Gwen would personally like to give a shout out to the following for being great advocates in helping me, my dogs and my clients overcome their fear of thunderstorms, fireworks and city noises.
Dr Karen Overall has a great study: Canine Intelligence Test Protocol that looks at pet and working dogs (aussies, border collies and german shepherds) that evaluated noise reactivity in non and noise reactive dogs. That showed some interesting data points on canine cognition and noise reactivity. It shows that something on the right side of the brain is working profoundly differently.
Shout out to Dr Amy Pike at Animal Behavior Wellness Center for being there and guiding Bug and I and so many of our clients through the advantages of behavioral medication.

Mindy Tenenbaum holds a master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine with a specialist in Veterinary Forensics. She founded DNA My Dog, a canine genetic testing company, in 2008. The company’s canine intolerance and sensitivity test, Allergy Test My Pet, was launched in 2018.
This test was created in response to a lack of affordable allergy testing options for dogs. It seemed that the primary options available for pet parents were to spend hundreds, even thousands, of dollars on allergy testing, switch to low-nutrition foods to avoid a response in the dog or rely on steroid and other allergy type drugs to control the response.
Mindy has over 20 years’ experience in Canine Rescue. She is Vice President of Basset Hound Rescue of Ontario and is on the Field Deployment team for the ASPCA. She has helped with emergency responses for a number of hurricanes, dog fighting cases, hoarding and puppy mill cases.
It was through her work with Basset Hound Rescue that she first started seeing dogs presenting with intolerances and allergy issues. Itchy ears, gas, upset stomachs, etc can be quite common in many dogs and a sign of a food or environmental intolerance.
Allergy Test My Pet tests for over 100 food and environmental factors that may be causing the dog to react. The test offers a tool for owners to learn some of the factors that may be causing their dog discomfort. Avoiding these items and/or switching diets can go a long, long way in a dog’s wellness.

Professional Photographer Molly Condit didn’t plan on photographing so many animals, it just sort of worked out that way. Luck for us! Because we get to learn from her how to take better pictures of our furry family members!!
About Molly:
As a former Air Force kid, New York City transplant and self-prescribed wanderer, I’ve had the chance to see a lot of the world and meet a wide variety of people. Working as a professional photographer over the past eight years has cemented a passion for documenting humans and animals and the inextricable bonds between them.
Commercial work is also a main focus, from producing stills for advertising campaigns to capturing behind the scenes production magic. The goal is for everyone who steps in front of my camera to leave feeling engaged, happy and most importantly, proud of the images that we create together.
My passion for animal advocacy has led to work with local rescue organizations and sanctuaries as well as volunteer work abroad. I’m fortunate enough to live with rescue felines who remind me daily just how lucky I am to be their human.

We’re seeing more and more Reactive Dogs everywhere lately! It’s one of the most common behavioral issues dog owners run into. We can do things to treat and prevent it though, if we strive to understand how our dogs see the world.

Happy 4/20! What better topic for today’s show than CBD for Dogs!?!?!
I’m so excited to welcome a licensed veterinarian, renowned pet cannabis expert, and founder of VETCBD based here in California. Having dedicated his life’s work to the health and well-being of animals, Dr Timothy Shu founded VETCBD in 2015 to help pets safely benefit from the multiple therapeutic uses of plant-based solutions including cannabis and hemp. Today, the California-based company VETCBD is the #1 veterinarian-formulated pet cannabis brand in America, and has been featured on TODAY, The New York Times, NBC News, NPR and more. His formulas are triple-tested, responsibly grown and come with free veterinary nurse support. Isn’t that incredible? It’s because he is passionate about educating pet owners about cannabis uses and sources — encouraging them to “Know your CBD” so that they keep their pets healthy and safe.
Check out www.vetcbdhemp.com You can purchase full-spectrum tinctures available in three sizes (125mg CBD, 250mg CBD and 500mg CBD) in addition to a 200mg CBD balm and a 3000mg CBD broad-spectrum tincture specifically for equines.
You can follow VETCBD on Instagram and Facebook @vetcbdhemp
Additionally, they’re working on a bill to legalize cannabis for pets in California whereby it would allow veterinarians to recommend cannabis products for pets and advice on dosage in addition to permitting the labeling and marketing of cannabis for pets in CA dispensaries. You can find more information about this effort at www.petcannabis.org

Kellie Stevens is a CPDT-KA certified trainer in New York City. She began studying and working with dog behavior when her first rescue, Sebastian Dangerfield (aka Cbass), turned out to be more of a challenge than she initially expected. Muzzles have a real stigma, that only vicious dogs wear them and they carry a lot of shame for dogs and owners in the general public’s eye. I’d like to change that!! Muzzles, when approached correctly, can be a part of positive training and a literal lifesaver for some reactive dogs!
Natahnee and I talk about what dogs benefit from wearing muzzles, what situations to use them in, how to choose and fit a muzzle, and MOST IMPORTANTLY how to properly introduce your dog to it. I hope you come away from this episode with a greater understanding of the role muzzles can play in a positive training regime.

She now works to increase access to service dogs for people with disabilities and helps people train their own service dog.

Molly and I talk about the differences between Service Dogs, Therapy Dogs, and Emotional Support Animals, fake Service Dogs, what makes a dog a good candidate for training, how they're trained, what they can be trained to do, and what people should/shouldn't do when they encounter Service Dogs.
Here are some links to some of the things we discussed in the episode:
ADA information about Service Animals
FAQs about Service Animals from the ADA
Emotional Support Animals in California
NPR article about Emotional Service Animals on Planes (Dec 8, 2020)
Texas Toddler attacked by dog in a Service Dog Vest
And I did find the article with the Emotional Support Alligator (I think I said Crocodile in the episode) and I will say, nowhere in the article does it say that his owner has ever tried to take Wally on a plane.

The amazing Irith Trietsch Bloom joins the podcast today to talk about How to Properly Socialize a Puppy (Even During a Pandemic).
Irith Trietsch Bloom has been training animals since the 1980s and has worked with everything from chickens and rabbits to dogs and horses—not to mention humans. She is regularly invited to give presentations and loves the learning that comes from taking part in conferences, seminars, and webinars.
Irith is faculty at Victoria Stilwell Academy for Dog Training and Behavior and DogBiz’s Dog Walking Academy. She is also a CPDT-KSA, a CBCC-KA, a CDBC, a CSAT, a VSPDT, a KPA CTP, and a CBATI, as well as being certified in TAGteach, a positive-reinforcement method for teaching humans.
Irith has a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania and lives in Los Angeles, California. In addition to running her company, The Sophisticated Dog, LLC, Irith volunteers with National English Shepherd Rescue and is a member of the Advisory Board for Daily Paws.
You can join her Facebook group for puppy (and other dog) owners, which is called Puppy Help Hotline:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/1096139067450795
Irith wants to help you Socialize a Puppy by giving you a FREE Socialization Checklist
If you want more from Irith, check out her website, www.TheSophisticatedDog.com, and follow her page on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/TheSophisticatedDog.
Irith reached out to me after we recorded with a few more ideas of ways to expose your puppy (or young dog) to more things:
- Dress up in costumes to help your puppy get used to people looking different.
- Use decorations, etc., to set up a socialization adventure in the yard.
- Put different things around your home as socialization adventures indoors (e.g., let the vacuum cleaner sit out, set an automated toy to walk across the floor, etc.).
Basically, be creative! Try to introduce them to as much as you can, little by little, and let their reaction be your guide!

From listening, you can see that Resource Guarding can be a complex behavior to tease out the cause of. It also involves making sure the dog is calm and happy (not over threshold) during the treatment plan. If all this is overwhelming, that’s what Dog Professionals are for! Don’t hesitate to reach out to me, Denise (we both offer virtual sessions) or another Professional Trainer or Behaviorist in your area to help with your particular dog and their unique situation.

Are you curious about what it takes to Foster a Dog?
This week I’m talking about Fostering Dogs During a Pandemic. I’m joined by Meghan Smith, who volunteers with Love Leo Rescue in Los Angeles and is currently fostering her 11th dog since March.
There are many amazing rescues in Los Angeles and around the country and the world, and I hope to feature many over the course of the podcast. This episode is not intended to be an endorsement of this particular rescue above or to the exclusion of another. Neither Meghan nor I are representatives of Love Leo Rescue, she is simply sharing her experience as one of their volunteers.
If you're interested in learning more about Love Leo Rescue you can find them at http://loveleorescue.org/
On Instagram: @loveleorescue (Meghan is @smithmegk)
They also have an Amazon wish list you can find at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2V72O4ERQ86FX?ref_=wl_share

My guest Stephanie Zikmann, The Holistic Groomer, points out that the groomer is the Pet Professional who probably sees your dog the most times during their life, but most people don’t think about what a grooming session feels like for their dog or how stressful most find it. She walks us through her process of making grooming more comfortable for each dog, step by step, using a holistic approach and classic training techniques geared at training a dog to love grooming!
