S4E3 - How the Media Landscape is Changing

Show Notes:

Kiley Jacques joined the Fine Homebuilding team as a senior editor in spring 2018. After years spent writing for home magazines, she is thrilled to be developing the department’s design content. The annual HOUSES, Kitchens & Baths, and Downsize issues are her purview, which means her time is spent looking for projects that are remarkable not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for the lessons they offer—her aim is to give readers thoroughly researched information that inspires. Kiley brings to the table a deep appreciation for design done right and an equally deep respect for the underlying construction methods and systems that make it work.

S3E30: Recycling The Built Environment

Erich Kruger

Erich Kruger has been in the building trades since 1997 when he was teaching carpentry in Antigua, West Indies as part of the Peace Corp/Crisis Corps.  In Vermont he has worked for several general contractors and on his own.  In 2005 he founded the non-profit ReNew Building Materials & Salvage, and has consulted with, and later ran, the deconstruction program at Finger Lakes ReUse in  Ithaca, New York .   He holds a degree in Wildlife Management & Environmental Ethics (minor).

Erich is happiest when he is diverting building materials at a job-site in the company of other like-minded conscientious deconstructors, or on the wood floors of a local contra dance with his family.  He lives in a straw bale home he built with ecological features, including solar electric, solar hot water, composting toilet, and masonry wood heater/oven.

 Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/deconstructionworksvt

Deconstruction Works specializes in the salvage and reuse (green demolition) of houses, outbuildings, and commercial interiors in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Western Massachusetts. Contractors and homeowners often lament the waste of perfectly good materials heading to the Dumpster every day.  If you have a project large (whole house or commercial interior) or small (kitchens, baths, additions), why not let Deconstruction Works quote for the recycling and reuse of those building materials?

About dEMios Architects

Your home is an intensely personal space. Your life unfolds there. Babies come home from the hospital. Puppies are gated in the kitchen during housebreaking. 90th birthdays are celebrated in the garden. You watch stupid movies in the family room, work on jigsaw puzzles in a snow storm, get bad news. Countless dinners and coffees and nights in bed. Laundry. Sleepovers. Teenagers playing ping pong or Dungeons and Dragons. Band practice, book club, holiday parties and just being still. How will you arrange your space to make the most of all this? We have been there, and we can help you imagine it all.
Most of our work consists of renovations and additions to existing housing stock in eastern Massachusetts. We prefer to work along with the client in the design process, which allows us to help the client realize their vision for their home and allows the client to participate fully in the process. We guide clients through the process of choosing their build team and ideally work closely with the contractor while construction is underway to minimize challenges and stress during that time.
While we are primarily a residential design firm, we also consider the entire property, including inside and outside of the house. The living exterior informs the interior. The wall is a lens through which we perceive the world. Landscape design includes the hardscape and permanent structures of a site as well as the appropriate trees, shrubs and perennial beds. I am especially interested in the landscape during the dark and cold half of the year.

Born and bred in Maine, I have been an artist and entrepreneur since I was young, and I have spent the last 20+ years in the practice of designing and building.  I have manifested a life centered around creation, and I have had the privilege of being a part of producing hundreds of custom homes, commercial spaces, pieces of furniture and fixtures. I began Hay Runner because for many of us, it is hard to separate what we do from who we are. What we do is make something from nothing and that is very hard to do, certainly hard to do well. Who we are is not just business people, designers and builders. We are problem solvers. We seek the chance to do exceptional work and be outstanding.

Show Notes:

Steve Baczek

https://stevenbaczekarchitect.com/info/

Steven Baczek Architect is a nationally recognized architect in the design and development of custom residential structures. I am located in the Boston Massachusetts Metro Area. Whether your need is a new custom low energy Passive House (the most stringent set of building performance standards in the country), or a zero energy home, an addition or renovation to an existing home, or a complimentary carriage house, pool house, or outbuilding, your project receives the same level of professional inquiry, respect, and understanding. My design process extensively scrutinizes every aspect of the development of your project. I employ a process of clear, practical, informational leadership that is never short of an opinion, or sometimes brutal honesty. My ability to listen, and flexibility to then adapt to each client and their respective project places my services in high regard, and high desire.

I have designed numerous projects across the spectrum of energy performance, comfort, and durability, to include many of the nation’s top energy conscious homes. While many state transparent labels of “green” or “sustainability” to their work, I provide good, sound design, of enduring value that includes sound environmental and energy conscious, “Truly Green” to mine. My commitment simply equates aesthetics and durability with performance and responsibility, an “integrated package”. My 28 years of architectural experience and knowledge coupled with an advanced understanding of building science founds my client’s pursuit for collaboration. My work is routinely found in numerous local and national media outlets to include Fine HomeBuilding, Journal of Light Construction, Green Building Advisor, and Environmental Building News. While I have and will do projects outside of the New England Area, my focus is on the Boston Metro Area, Cape Cod, and the Islands.

S3E9: Women In Architecure: Molly Bell

Show Notes:

Molly Bell

https://mbaandd.com/

Born and raised in Taos, New Mexico, Molly found herself yearning to move out of state to attend College. She first moved to San Francisco to attend the University of San Francisco, where she fell in love with Architecture. Here she realized, in order to pursue her career, she needed to transfer to a school with an established architecture program; so, she returned to the Land of Enchantment and graduated from the University of New Mexico with her Bachelor of Art in Architecture. After undergrad, California was still beckoning, so she moved to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California, where she received her Masters of Architecture. All the while, during her secondary education, she toured Central America, North America, and Europe. The experience of living in and traveling to other places has played a significant role in her understanding of design and her style of Architecture.

Molly also grew up around construction. Her father was a contractor so, from an early age, she was exposed to the building process and finds that it is one of her favorite parts of architecture. Understanding construction also exercises a “problem solving/solution finding” muscle that is an integral part of design.

Over the last decade, she has worked on everything from temporal architectural installations, design competitions, educational, medical, custom residential, multi-family residential, and institutional projects. All scales of architecture excite Molly and she likes the challenge of moving amongst different size projects.

Currently, Molly is thrilled to be living and working in the state that she grew up in. She finds endless inspiration in the landscape and the culture unique to New Mexico. Practicing in a state rich with natural beauty and history, inspires her to create architecture that reflects the environment and will similarly stand the test of time. Mixing the historical architectural language of New Mexico with the modern amenities of contemporary design, Molly is exited to develop her style and express herself through the buildings she creates.,

Growing up in a remodeling and repair business positioned him for success when building because of the vast amount of time fixing, repairing, and replacing the mistakes of previous methods of construction. All of this repair work has driven Jake to educate himself on building science and learn to apply those ideas to his high performance projects. Jake regularly writes for Fine Homebuilding, Journal of Light Construction, Pro Remodeler, and Pro Tradecraft. He is a weekly contributor to Buildshownetwork.com. As a speaker he has presented at JLC Live, Fine Homebuilding Summit, JLC Deck and Remodeling, and EEBA. Jake is currently raising a family of three children with his wife in Columbia Missouri.

Starting with just a couple of projects in Cavriago, Italy in 2009, we have invested a lot of time and heart into our company. We are constantly challenging ourselves to learn about new building science, design + construction methods, and innovative products.

We believe in the widely used maxim, ‘think globally, act locally’ an idea which we hope to bring to our practice through the study of international and local environmental and architectural conditions.

As such, we have been able to grow our client base, our platform of knowledge, and our international experience. We opened an office in Denver, CO, USA, in 2016, and we are constantly growing and changing with this complicated and exciting industry.

Emu Systems

Vision: Research based Passive design/build as the industry standard for mainstream construction.

Mission: To close the gap between mainstream construction practices and advanced, proven building science, and to empower our industry to build for the future and for resiliency through builder training and simple, standard, Passive systems.

We are experts in virtual prototyping for the construction industry, building science nerds, and Passive House enthusiasts with company origins in Australia, experience in Europe, and new roots in Colorado.

He has written almost 400 blog posts on topics such as marketing, branding, entrepreneurship, personal development, sustainability and more.

Casey is on a mission to help people build homes, businesses and lives in a more conscious manner and is co-authoring a book with Kevin Harrington, the original shark from the hit TV show Shark Tank.

When Casey started his first business and construction company, it was just like every other company. He just wanted to do good work and make a good living. It was not until he and his wife, Natasha, attended their first Tony Robbins event in 2012 that his mindset shifted and he started to ask himself "Why?"

Then, when he and Natasha found out they were having a child, everything clicked. If he was going to tell this child that he could do anything he wanted and become whoever he wanted, he would have to lead by example. He wanted his son to be proud of him and look up to him. He wanted to be the hero in his son's eyes.

That's when The Conscious Builder was born.

Less House, More Home

Like you, Corinne Watson, founder of Tiny Homes of Maine, dreamed of having a tiny home on wheels. She envisioned an alternative to the mainstream: a tiny home, a smaller footprint and more freedom to live the lifestyle of her choosing.

Since selling their first tiny home in 2017, Tiny Homes of Maine has been designing and building custom tiny homes and tiny spaces for customers across Maine. The family-owned business is on a mission to make the tiny home dream attainable for more individuals.

Why Choose Tiny Homes of Maine?

Tiny Homes of Maine offers a customizable design-build solution, including a 3D virtual walk through to help customers envision their tiny lifestyle. “This allows customers to experience the space before they buy, which is so important when going Tiny,” says Corinne.

Design-Build Expertise

Corinne and her husband Tom have the design expertise to ensure form and function, and their manufacturing and building industry backgrounds guarantee solid construction. Tiny Homes of Maine can also design, build and deliver mobile offices, retail space, art studios, vacation cottages and more. There is also an option to order a partially finished tiny home.

BIO

Michael grew up on an old farm in central Maine, learning practical skills and spending a lot of time working and playing outdoors in woods, fields and water. During high school he became interested in timber frame construction, where the skeleton of the building is expressed with large timbers and traditional all-wood joinery. He knew he wanted to design and build beautiful, natural, expressive homes for a career, but was torn between going to college for architecture, engineering, or another field. He chose to attend Tufts University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, with a minor in Architectural Studies, graduating with honors and with an award for entrepreneurial achievement. He had spent every break during college working as carpenter or woodworker, and used his savings and award money to buy an old Volvo station wagon and some tools, and spent the next several years working as a fine woodworker, carpenter and contractor all over New England, mostly in Cambridge and Nantucket, MA.

Michael and his wife-to-be decided they would move from Somerville, MA to Portland, ME in August of 2001. The events a few weeks later hastened their move, and in early 2002, Michael found a job as a drafter at a respected residential design/build firm near Portland. Over the next twelve years, Michael worked in various roles at the company as they grew to more than five times their size when he started, including a stint back in the field as a foreman and project manager, but for the last several years he managed the design department and business development as they established a new cabinetmaking division and took on some of their largest and most successful projects to date.

Throughout his career, Michael had studied building science and energy efficiency, and the more he learned, the more frustrated he grew with not being able to convince clients to implement strategies that were better for the environment. He and his wife had also decided to relocate from their small urban lot to have more land for their growing homesteading activities, and to be closer to their parents, so in 2014 they moved to a farm established in 1830 in Palermo, Maine, between Augusta and Belfast, about 75 miles north of Portland.

Michael had been interested in the Passive House building energy standard since he had first learned about it in 2006, and got a job with one of the premier builders of Passive Houses in the US, who happened to be starting a shop to build the most energy efficient buildings in the world, indoors, in Searsmont, Maine. Michael’s title was Operations Manager, but he performed a wide variety of tasks to help bring the new business from concept to a successful venture. He learned a whole new paradigm during his 15 months as an employee there, and subsequently earned the designation “Certified Passive House Consultant,” which means he is qualified to design buildings that use 80-90% less energy to operate than conventional buildings, and that are healthier and more comfortable than other buildings as well.

As exciting as it was to help start a new venture, Michael missed using the skills he had learned helping hundreds of clients design new homes and renovations, so in early 2015 he started a new firm, Michael Maines Residential Design. He understands that not every client is interested in building a certified Passive House, but he works with them to find a balance of efficiency and cost, while making sure that the home or renovation is beautiful, functional and healthy for its occupants and the environment. Michael works all over Maine, with current projects in Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Belgrade and Rockland. He also works on more remote projects, currently including Rhode Island and Chicago, using the advantages of digital communication whenever possible.

Patrice has 20 plus years’ experience as an entrepreneur in Maine, most recently working in real estate and development. She is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island, with a B.S. in Textiles, Merchandising & Design. Her love for construction began while developing a 5 lot subdivision of luxury ski homes in the mountains of western Maine. After working with “typical” builders, she felt the industry was in need of a more creative, soulful eco-friendly process for building homes.

With a passion for the outdoors, naturally, Patrice gravitated towards the building net-zero homes in harmony with the elements here in Maine. After years of research and building relationships within the industry, Patrice built her own net-zero home. She has become proficient in managing the process of building highly functional, thoughtfully designed, creative net-zero homes. Her passion for green building is unprecedented, and she hopes she can share that passion throughout your personal home building experience.
