The Toyota Crown might not be familiar to most Americans, but the nameplate has a long history stretching back decades in Japan. The Crown replaces the Avalon in North America, and it's every bit as spacious as the car it replaces, but with a much more luxurious interior and a hybrid drivetrain that delivers both impressive fuel economy and serious performance numbers.

Toyota Crown is based on a version of the Toyota New Global Architecture K (TNGA-K) platform, which also serves as the foundation for some of the company's sedans and crossovers.

It has a length of 4,928 mm, a width of 1,839 mm, and a height of 1,539 mm with a wheelbase length of 2,850 mm. When compared to the Avalon, it has a shorter wheelbase.

The 2023 Toyota Crown combines Toyota's latest design language with a fastback shape, as it has a modern sporty design that incorporates some cues from the bZ4X, such as the front fascia. It has a sleek front fascia with sharp headlights linked by an LED lighting element. The faux grille and air dam are finished in gloss black at the bottom. It has a coupe-like roofline that leads to a blacked-out, rugged-looking back end with narrow LED taillights.

The interior of the Avalon can be seen evolving in the Crown, and the layout will be familiar to anyone trading in. It is, however, much more technologically advanced. A fully digital 12.3-inch gauge cluster is linked to a second 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, keeping everything close to the driver's fingertips. There is an optional 11-speaker JBL Premium Audio system, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be used wirelessly while your phone is charging on the standard Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charger. Heated front seats are standard, with the option of adding heated back seats and upgrading the front seats to heated and ventilated.

The Crown is available in three trim levels and two hybrid drivetrain options. The XLE and Limited trims have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine mated to three electric motors, totaling 236 horsepower. Meanwhile, the Platinum trim has a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 340 horsepower mated to an electric motor on the rear axle. Both drivetrains come standard with all-wheel drive, but only the XLE and Limited have an EV mode.

Prices start at $39,950 for the XLE, $45,500 for the Limited, and $52,350 for the Platinum. All prices do not include the $1,095 destination charge.
