Su Mei Tan, AThR: Enhancing Family Communication Through Art Therapy | All Together #41

I know what you’re thinking: How do art and communication go together? Family relationships can be conflicting, nurturing, or safe for each member. Sometimes individuals also perceive those relationships differently.

In today's episode of All Together, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Su Mei Tan, founder of Art Tearapy and an art therapist based in Melbourne. While she began her journey by building houses in third-world countries, she discovered her passion for helping children through art. This led to her exploration of art therapy, culminating in the creation of Art Tearapy. Art Tearapy focuses on using the creative mind to understand and improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Dina and Su Mei discuss the various dynamics within a family and how these dynamics can either facilitate communication or create resistance to healthy communication patterns. They share observations on how people communicate, including how certain patterns can foster negative relationships among family members. Su Mei also explores how art therapy can be utilized for team-building exercises involving the entire family, encompassing both verbal and non-verbal communication.

Dr. Jennifer L. Bevan: Communication Patterns & Social Support in Family Care | All Together #39

Every family has different ways they have learned to communicate. This particular pattern impacts how we speak to each other, how we solve problems that occur, and the ways in which we care for each other.

In this episode of "All Together: The Family Science Insights Podcast," host Dina Sargeant is joined by Dr Jennifer L. Bevan, a professor in the School of Communication at Chapman University in California, United States. Her research interests focus upon the negotiation of difficult relational interactions, such as ongoing conflict, jealousy, family caregiving, chronic illness, as well as related psychological and physical health correlates of these experiences. She has published more than 75 scholarly communication books, articles, and book chapters appearing in such journals as Human Communication Research, Communication Research, Social Science and Medicine, and Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. She was recognized in 2009 and 2016 as one of the most prolific and central scholars in the field of communication and received multiple book awards for her 2013 book The Communication of Jealousy (Peter Lang Press).

Dina and Dr. Jennifer delve into a deeper understanding of caregiving, widening the conversation to include not only elderly care but also the care for family members with disabilities. Dr. Stacey Gordon: Dynamics and Relationships in Aging Families | All Together #21

As we age, so too do our relationships with family members. The dynamics within an aging family are constantly evolving, and these changes can bring both opportunities and challenges. It is important to understand ageism as part of our lives, and the need for long-term care system to support people as they grow older in their homes.

In this episode of All Together, host Dina Sargeant was joined by Dr. Stacey Gordon, DSW, LMSW, Program Director of Next Phase Adult Caregiving and Retirement for the Work Life office at New York University. She provides personalized consultations and develops programs to address structural ageism, and is dedicated to elevating conversations and dismantling negative stereotypes around aging.

At the beginning of the episode, Dr. Stacey argues that ageism perpetuates negative stereotypes and can limit older people's abilities to be independent and points out that people age in many different ways. She discusses the negative consequences of exposure to negative stereotypes of aging and how exposure to positive stereotypes can lead to a longer life. Dr. Stacey also highlights the importance of promoting independence among aging family members, and suggests that families should focus on having conversations with the older family members to support their independence.

Gabriella Joustra: Screen-time Practice in Family | All Together #19

Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives, and the issue of screen time has become increasingly prevalent in families. It is not only adults who are dependent on their gadgets, but also children who have grown up with smartphones for their entertainment. This dependence on technology can impact the dynamic of relationships within families, and it is important to find a balance between technology usage and daily life activities.

In this episode of All Together, host Dina Sargeant was joined by Gabriella Joustra, host of the Home Organization Science podcast, Room by Room, and the Household Management Science podcast, On the House to discuss screen time and its impact on her family.

Gabriella shared her struggle with addiction to her smartphone and how it negatively impacts her life at home. She suggested scheduling times for phone usage, prioritizing important activities, and setting boundaries for app usage through features like time limits and notifications. They also discussed how the pandemic has affected screen time usage, making it acceptable to often use phones due to being at home all the time. Gabriella also talked about her passion for roller skating, and highlighted how roller skating is a great way to have fun, exercise, and socialize without the use of a phone.

Marie Stella: Challenges in Maintaining Relationships with Family | All Together #18

Maintaining relationships with family can be challenging, especially when dealing with traditional family dynamics. Meanwhile, family relationships are one of the most important aspects of our lives by providing us with a sense of belonging, love, and support.

In this episode of All Together, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Marie Stella, a student who was born and raised in Singapore for 20 years. Coming from a rather traditionalist household, she often found excuses to avoid social interaction with her family, whether it be skipping family events or locking herself in her room. However, after living alone for four years, she began to appreciate family time more. Quoting from a Roman Poet, Sextus, “absence does make the heart grow fonder”.

They started this episode with an icebreaker activity, where Marie shared her favorite movie, Coraline, and how she relates to the main character's desire for a different life. She described her parents differently: her dad was the strict one, while her mom was more nurturing and caring. Marie also shared challenges she faced while trying to express their opinions to their traditional Asian parents, and how their relationships with their parents are a lot better now than it was when they were younger. Here, Marie emphasized how distance from her parents has helped her maintain a positive relationship with them.

Dr. Marissa Holst: Maintaining Healthy Relationships With Extended Family Members | All Together #17

While a nuclear family (parents and children) is typically the most emphasized in most family talks, extended family can actually play a significant role in shaping a person's identity, values, and beliefs too. That’s why maintaining healthy relationships with extended family members is important to provide a proper sense of support and belonging. However, extended family relationships can be challenging to navigate as they can have different perspectives, experiences, and values in a family.

In this episode of All Together, host Dina Sargeant was joined by Dr. Marissa Holst, an assistant professor of Psychology and Human Services at the University of Minnesota-Morris. She received a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, and an M.S./Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from Iowa State University. At UM-Morris, she teaches courses on human development and family studies. Her research focuses primarily on family relationships and well-being. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, watercolor painting, being outdoors, and spending time with her family.

Dr. Holst addressed the challenges of navigating and maintaining relationships within extended families, which can be complicated due to various factors, and mentioned the impact of sandwich generation as one of the challenges. She also emphasized the importance of building healthy relationships with extended family members and offered some best practices to do it, and the importance of setting boundaries within a family, particularly with extended family members.

Dr. Caroline Sanner: Making A Second Marriage Work | All Together #16

In a world where people come and go, some individuals decide to seek opportunities to find new love and companionship after experiencing the end of a previous marriage or long-term relationship. This can be a challenging experience, as navigating step-families and becoming new parents to children from our partners’ previous spouse requires careful consideration.

In this episode of All Together, host Dina Sargeant was joined by Dr. Caroline Sanner, an Assistant Professor of Family Science at Virginia Tech. She studies family complexity, including how structurally complex families (e.g., post-divorce families, stepfamilies) adapt to change and transition. Her research seeks to identify invisible processes in complex families and understand how these processes are shaped by taken-for-granted aspects of culture and society, including norms, ideologies, policies, and institutions.

Dr. Sanner discussed the importance of listening and open communication in relationships, both in romantic partnerships and in families with children. She emphasized the need for self-awareness and making conscious efforts to form new, healthy habits in second marriages or relationships. Additionally, Dr. Sanner shared advice for parents on how to prepare their children for a new step-parent, including taking the time to introduce the new partner slowly and being honest about the changes to the children.

Gabriella Joustra: Changing Dynamics in An Aging Family | All Together #15

As society has progressed, gender roles have become less rigid, and new forms of family have emerged, this has led to a shift in the dynamics within an ideal family and how it differs from person to person based on their upbringing and current situation.

In this episode of All Together, host Dina Sargeant is joined by Gabriella Joustra, host of the Home Organization podcast, Room by Room, and the Household Management podcast, On the House. Gabriella shared her perspective on the historical shift from a larger family group to the nuclear family, which she grew up with. The discussion also touched on how a family can be differently structured from the other ones, for example, a family with divorced parents. Here Gabriella shared her experience of a conflict she went through and how it changes her perspective on many things, especially relationships.

Lu Ngo: Communicating with Family while Living Abroad | All Together #14

Once in a while we all find a need to fly the nest and explore the world around us, that could be by moving into your own space, moving cities and sometimes moving countries. It’s an inevitable part of growth in this day and age. We all, in some time, become expats in the world.

In the 14th episode of All Together, Dina Sargeant, was joined by Lu Ngo, host of the Happiness podcast, Seroboost, and the Wellbeing podcast, Doing Well, on the LMSL Team. 5 years ago, before becoming a podcast host and a part of the LMSL family, she made the decision to move to Melbourne and start her life in a completely new country. Lu was not only learning about the culture she immersed herself in but also learning about the people she wants to be surrounded by.

During the episode, they both shared their new view on family as being who they can open up to the most. While family used to mean parent and child relationships, it now means so much more, with having the right kind of people around you can feel you always have family around. Lu shared her experiences on how she re-adjusted her mindset, and how she was able to let go of the guilt of leaving family behind. Dina and Lu connected on the importance of finding your place to live before settling down and dealing with the later regret. They both spend some time sharing their contrasting decision when given the same situation of moving to a new place, Lu taking the opportunity whilst Dina decided to stay in the same place.

Kylie Meyer: Caring for the Caregiver | All Together #10

While some can hire caregivers to provide that support to family members, sometimes it is the family member who is responsible for providing that level of care. Being a caregiver to a family member can allow a sense of trust between the two individuals. Sometimes, however, constantly attending to a family member's needs takes a toll on the caregiver themselves.

In this episode of All Together, Dina Sargeant talks with Kylie Meyer— a gerontologist and Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve University.

Her research is focused on psychoeducational interventions to support family caregivers in multiple domains. These include complex medical/nursing care, healthy caregiving relationships, and financial well-being.

Dina and Kylie both tackle the importance of taking some time for yourself as well as the current process of government support for their respective countries.

    E. Jeffrey Hill, Ph.D.: Money Talks in The Family | All Together #5

Arguments about money, between family members, are the second highest cause of divorce in the US. The focus on oneself and the inability to communicate with their partner in life concerning money, are two of the main causes of such a situation.

We also asked Jeffrey about how the pandemic changed family finances in society and how important it is to have conversations about money in a family — which he answered by hundreds over ten scales along with the reasons behind them.
