Jock Zonfrillo, an immigrant to Australia, rose to prominence as a chef. Following his success at the national and international levels, he was invited to serve as a judge on the popular cooking competition series MasterChef. The life of the celebrity chef and TV host, who passed away on April 30 at age 46, was not without private and public tragedy.

Born Barry Zonfrillo, he grew up in Ayr, Scotland. His Italian-born father Ivan worked as a barber, while his Scottish-born mother Sarah came from a long line of farmers.

Zonfrillo got his start in the food industry at a young age, when he was hired as a dishwasher. After dropping out of high school at age 15, he began an apprenticeship as a chef at the Turnburry Hotel, a popular golf resort. It was there in 1993 that he won the title of Young Scottish Chef of the Year. His early career took him steadily south, first to Chester and then to London, where he worked for Marco Pierre White, whom Zonfrillo often cited as a formative inspiration and whom many regard to be the first rock star chef.Substance abuse and bouts of homelessness also plagued this time period, as described by Zonfrillo in his memoir, Last Shot.

Zonfrillo spent a year in Australia beginning in 1996, and he eventually settled there, taking a position as the head chef at Restaurant 41 in Sydney.

He joined the Penfolds Magill Estate in South Australia as its chief chef in 2011, however he left the position 18 months later. While the restaurant's management claimed that creative "differences" were to blame for Zonfrillo's departure, the chef later claimed that the establishment was reluctant to use Australian native ingredients because of cultural bias.

Zonfrillo was praised and criticised for his infatuation with Australian natural ingredients in the kitchen. With an original cuisine that includes kakadu plums, bunya nuts, and native marine succulents, he founded the fine dining establishment Orana in Adelaide in 2013. In 2018 and 2019, it was named the best restaurant in their respective guides by Gourmet Traveller and the Good Food Guide. Before becoming Bistro Blackwood, Street ADL opened in 2013 as Restaurant Blackwood, directly below Orana.

Zonfrillo founded the non-profit organisation Orana Foundation in 2016. Its goal was to draw attention to the usefulness of traditionally Australian foodstuffs. To create a database of Australian natural substances, the foundation received a $1.25 million grant from the South Australian government in 2017 and established a research cooperation with the University of Adelaide.

The Basque Culinary World prize, given annually to chefs who are "transforming society through gastronomy," is a prestigious award, and in 2018, Zonfrillo received it in recognition of his efforts with the organisation. The prize comes with €100,000.

However, the foundation's database project would spark legal disputes with the University of Adelaide and an Australian newspaper, proving the organization's controversial nature.

In 2014, Zonfrillo hosted the UK Discovery Channel show Nomad Chef, and the following year, he hosted the short-lived restaurant reality TV show Restaurant Revolution, whose judges included chef Neil Perry, restaurant critic John Lethlean, and writer Jess Ho.

Zonfrillo was already a prominent figure in Australia's food sector when he was appointed as a judge on MasterChef in 2019. The original judges Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan, and George Calombaris were replaced by Zonfillo, writer Melissa Leong, and previous participant Andy Allen for the show's twelfth season in 2020.

Zonfrillo was well-liked by both the competitors and the audience thanks to his candid and rogue-like judging approach.
