Although the magnitude 4.8 earthquake this morning in the New York City region may have come as a rattling shock, it's not the first time the East Coast and New York City have been hit with a quake. In January, a 1.7 earthquake struck Astoria, Queens, and in 1884, a 5.0 earthquake was measured in New York City. There's a major fault line in New Jersey called the Ramapo Fault, which stems from the Appalachian Mountains, and there are at least five smaller fault lines under Manhattan Island. Luckily, standards exist to assure our safety.
