This is a speech as an assignment for my Year 2 Term 2. She had only picked up Cantonese her own before joining my Year 2 course by surrounding herself with Cantonese. I was impressed by her existing level before joining us.

This is a speech from Year 2 term 1 class.  Give it a listen and learn some potential new vocabulary.

Year 2 classes are perfect for people who has learned a bit of Cantonese and can perform basic communication while travelling in Hong Kong. We will further build vocabulary to speak about these topics:

- Chinese New Year traditions and turnip cake recipe
- getting to know your colleagues at work
- speaking about your travels and hobbies
- booking a table; ordering food; asking for directions in town
- speaking to relatives to learn more about lives of immigrants
- communicating with minibus drivers & getting boat tickets
- talking about symptoms and comparison between Chinese & western medicine

In year 2, we dived deeper into grammar, lexical variations and colloquial expressions. Combined with 12 units of listening, vocabulary sets made ready for you on Quizlet, impromptu questions and occasional speech,  my goal is to prepare you to feel comfortable and build confidence using Cantonese if you were to move there.

Hopped on a plane to Berlin to attend a yestheory meetup, which last for three days, followed by the premiere of Project Iceman on the forth day. I've built a pretty good momentum of meeting new friends during my trip, so meeting hundreds of people feel natural to me! And I did quite enjoy it. But two straight days of networking proved to be too draining for me. I ended up avoiding the crowd on the third day, but making myself re-join them on the forth day was so worth it. I'll tell you more in the next episode.

My ferry was scheduled at 6:45 am but the second time I opened my eyes after the alarm at 5:30 am, it became 6:30 am!  Was I going to miss all my transportation connection to Greece? 

Out on a date to Ocean Park, once in a while, is not a bad idea. Let's learn some animals that you will see in Ocean Park.

Four days in Naples- this is the reason I came to see. This is somewhat what I expected, but I couldn't deal with the madness. I needed a change so I can continue travel and working. So it's time for island escape. Amalfi coast day trip, followed by a week on an island called Ischia. 

There's a quite popular dish called gau2 jai2 fan2 (little dog noodles), is believed to be originated in the 50s and 60s in Hong Kong. One potential reason of the name is that the shape of the noodles resemble the shape of dog tails. Another reason may be that Gau2jai2 resembles the sound of gau3 jai3- to give relief, when Hong Kong was in war times. 

In this episode, I will introduce a few popular dishes you can find in one of these noodles shops. 

Having met a new Slovenian friend at a hostel in Rome, we were headed the same way, Naples. It was a shame because we had great conversation to start with. As he further told me his political views as we were travelling, I started to see him differently. But despite of our difference, we saluted, shoke hands then parted ways as he finished his short trip in Italy.  

Learn a few basic food names, then learn few phrases such as discount, soup base, what's included, what's not included. After hot pot, you are headed to Yau Ma Tei Theatre searching for a potential Cantonese opera show. 

I've said it. It may be a stereotype. But it's my observation but not conclusion.

1) The Italian: funny and loud
2) The American: chatty, chilled and relaxed
3) The Irish: unintelligible English. Sorry, it's probably just my problem
4) The British: a bit quite and reserved; complained about the beautiful sunset view because a tree was within the view
5) The Hong Kong: just quiet
6) The Slovenian: I don't know, we just talked basketball
7) Oh, the Mexican: I almost forgot about him

What else can you say other than "leng3" to describe a beautiful view? Listen on. 

So three girls and I were set off to the Colosseum, missing one person on the way, and I had to part ways with them. Why? Take a listen.

Let's use your existing Cantonese knowledge and convert them to new knowledge. From what you may know, you can already have a good guess of what these colloquial phrases mean. What does "no sand, run milk" mean for a drink? What does "walk street" mean when ordering food? What does "pretty boy" and "pretty girl" mean? 

Well done to my students for completing their speeches! Now, it's time to showcase them and you can also learn something. I have broken down some vocabulary and left you with two questions at the end.

If you have been to Hong Kong and speak a bit Cantonese, you'll know what I mean... at markets you won't be surprised to hear people call you leng nui or leng jai. Equivalent of saying "my love" or "darling" just so people feel happier. (maybe with a purpose?)  It's not exactly flirting, just having some fun. You get the idea. Try to say call people leng jai/ leng nui out of nowhere and I'm sure you'll make them smile!

Another good speech from another student. She has really good listening ability when she first started lessons with me, so we mostly worked on getting her speaking going. By making some short speeches, I think it really helps with forming ideas in Cantonese! 

I met my student when I was trying the #90dayscantochallenge on Instagram. She was in Canada back then, but now moved to Hong Kong.  This speech came out really great- with great stories and use of vocabulary.  Just to say, she's been learning Mandarin to HSK 5 I believe, so she has good Chinese foundation. Plus! We edited the speech for quite a few weeks to get this good! Overall, I am very happy!

We hopped on the overnight bus, praying nothing bad would happen like getting robbed, then tried closing my eyes to sleep. Bus was stopped and some guards asked me to show him my passaporte. When we kept going and thought that'd be it, the bus suddenly stopped where the driver said "Todo bajan!"......

I was on my way down South, finding myself at the border of Ecuador and Peru, with only myself as a backpacker walking across a strangely busy strip of street, with stores on both sides. I was told to hop on a taxi instead to get to the immigration point, so I did. Literally there was no one at the line, so I made it to Peru, meeting two couples who were also travelling down South.

Fastfoward to January 2015 - I spent the December in Galapagos, feeling a bit too comfortable there, so decided to make a move. 

From September - November, I made my way from Central America to South America. Spent a few days in Nicaragua doing touristy things like night hikes to a Volcano, volcano boarding, then to Costa Rica in a birdwatching lodge, stayed at a beautiful house by the sea in Panama, flew to Medellin, before taking a bus to Quito and catching a flight to Galapagos Island. I wanted to make it to these places, but yet I found myself wanting to move. You can find more stories in English in my blog.

I first moved to England in 2017. While living with one Italian and French (in a same room) while looking for a job, we had some interesting discussion. The French guy inspired me to think- the first time in my life I am thinking to an extent where I cannot sleep and focus for a day. I went for a walk, chat with some good friends, reflected a bit and wrote this blog. It's been 4 years and do feel a bit strange recording this again. In this final episode wrapping up 90 days of your hard work, I've summarized the past 89 episodes into five parts

1) Self-Introduction, speaking about your background and motive of learning Cantonese or visiting Hong Kong
2) Scheduling time to have a meal with friends
3) Getting to the venue, asking for direction briefly, meeting new friends and buying drinks at local shops
4) Basic ordering and measure words, chatting about hobbies, past events, exchanging contact information, asking where people live and getting the bills
5) Calling friends and ask what they are doing, ask if friends have had breakfast yet, finding friends at meetup location, asking for future plans 

Now you know you friend is going to China. Ask them how long/ how many days will they go for? 

Further catch up about plans for the following week. One asks :what are you doing next week?  We will go travelling to China! And you? Will you go travelling? No, we are staying in Hong Kong. We will go camping. 

You meet your friend to play pool. You all had a drink, and see what you all are up to the next morning. 

It's another day. You are asking a friend what's his/her plan for the night.  You are going to play pool with a friend and asked him/her if s/he wants to join. 

Recap: what are you doing? I am working; I am eating; I am drinking; did you eat breakfast yet? Did you eat breakfast? I did. I didn't yet. I did not. I do not. Are you hungry? What are you doing in the morning? Are you free to eat breakfast together? I want to, but I have to work. Next time! 

You finally finished the steep hike up to the Peak! (Remember to find the secret lookout spot! Shh.....) But you friend has to leave to get back to work. 

After a quick break, someone can't help but ask "how long more (till arriving the Peak)?"  Almost there!

While hiking up from Central to the Peak, it is obviously not a flat hike! Let's learn how to say "I'm tired" and ask for a quick stop. 

We are hiking to the Peak! Let's learn how to say "where are we going?"  and also do  "where are we?" ? 

Let's learn how to use the -ing form, using "gan2" after the verb. 

I'll break down the how to say  1) my pineapple bun (ge or measure word), 2) my pineapple buns, 3) this pineapple bun and 4)these pineapple buns so you have a better understand of using ge3, go3 and di1.

Amazed by the variety and awesomeness of bakery/ pastry, you ask the shop keep what this is and what these are. They tell you about pineapple bun, cocktail bun and egg tarts. 

You friend said "s/he is outside of the MTR station" while you didn't see him/her. Now you guys meet. Before setting off for a hike, let's get some breakfast! 

Meeting up your friend the following week for a hike. You two met up at an MTR station. Of course you won't be able to see each other for some reasons... so you decided to call! "Where are you?" "I can see you" "But I cannot see you!" 

When it comes to paying, some like to play the staring contest mid-meal. Let's learn how to say "My treat" and "you returning to Hong Kong, I'll pay". 

We looked at an example " take a look"- tai2 ha5 in the last episode. We further applied this to go verb phrases "go on holiday" and "travel".  We looked at "Did you go on holiday/ travel?"  You then invite the friend to see if he is free to go on a hike.  

You are meeting up your good old buddy at the usual breakfast spot (true story...) You two haven't seen each other for a while, and catching up! Asking each other how's work, how's your partners and how's life. 

Short listening exercise, introduction of "lou5 dei3 fong1" - old place/ spot (aka tacit location where good friends know without stating where), and brief explanation of difference between " yau mo + verb " vs " verb + jor + mei" from the last two episodes. Examples: when to use "lei yau mou sik jou chaan ?" vs "lei sik jor jou chaan mei?"

Building on what we learned about Did you + eat breakfast - "lei yau mo sik jou chaan?", let's try how to say did you have breakfast yet? -  "lei sik jor jou chaan mei aa?"

Supplementing day 36, let's build up sentences of "Did you + verb" questions. We also looked at "Do you + verb" questions in this episode. 

Example:
Do you know where is Time Square?
Do you want to go eat?
Do you speak Cantonese?
Do you like Hong Kong?
Do you eat meat?

Did you eat breakfast?

In this episode, we discussed how to say " I eat... ", " I don't eat ...", "I ate" and " I did not eat". Example sentences: 

1. I eat cakes.
2. I don't eat meat. ( One way to say you are a vegetarian or vegan in Cantones)
3. I ate breakfast.
4. I didn't eat breakfast.  

We exchange contact information, trying to persuade everyone to go on a hike on Sunday. To say "yes", as in "sure, that's a good idea", you can go with "hou2". In this episode, I explained briefly how the use of ending particles (a3, wo3, la1) changes the tone of the sentence. 

Finally we finish dinner at the Japanese restaurant. We got the bill, then plan for future events, and exchange contact information. 

Applying what we learned about ending particles, we'll try some sentences you can incorporate them. Example: it's late already! It's 10 pm already. Really? It is 10 pm already? It is. It is just 10 pm!  Still at the Japanese restaurant, let's learn what to say to get the bill.

Further our discussion of the use of a few ending particles, we dive a bit deeper to find out when we changes the tone (6 Cantonese tones)  of the ending particle 

In Beginner's Day 42, I introduced 6 ending particles and briefly introduced a few examples(la1, ga3, ge3/2, wo3, me1, le1).  In this episode, I'll attempt to illustrate why and how we use ending particles (la3, ja3, je1, a3). These are the most commonly used ones and should get you a long way. 

In this episode, I'll prepare you to my student's speech. I'll lay out and explain 1) grammar/ sentence structure and 2) potential vocabulary for you before the next intermediate episode. You will probably be learning Cantonese for 1+ years to be comfortable with this. 

Amazed by your Cantonese, your friend asks: what languages do you still speak?  Do you like learning Cantonese?  Amazing! I only speak Cantonese!

You friend said s/he went to Thailand. You as well! You asked "where in Thailand?" , "is it fun?", "what did you do?"

Responding to "what sports do you like to do?", one friend suggests swimming. S/he also asks "do you like swimming?" You say "No, I don't like swimming" and further expresses what you like to do - running. 

Further discussing what the group like to do, let's learn how to say "sports". We will also learn to ask the rest of the group - "What sports do you like to do?" 

After ordering, old and new friends are sitting together, trying to break the ice by asking the newcomers the deep question: do you like Hong Kong? 

In this episode, we will continue to use measure words to do some ordering: 

- A bowl of beef rice
- A plate of sushi
- A cup of beer

8 more commonly seen measure words:
yat1 tiu4- long, curve, soft e.g. cable, string, hair
yat1 ji1- long hard, sticky like. e.g. wooden stick, pencil
yat1 jeung1 - flat, e.g. paper, table, chair, bed
yat1 bun2 - book-like objects, e.g. book, dictionary, magazine
yat1 faai3 - slice , e.g. biscuit, leaf
yat1 bou6 - some electronic products, e.g. TV, phone, computer, camera, washing machine
yat1 jek3 - most animals, small things, cute things, e.g. dog, cat, elephant, cup, stuffed animals
yat1 ga3 - mode of transpottation, e.g. car, ship, train, aeroplane 

We are now at the Japanese restaurant and get ready to order, but we must understand the use of measure words. We reviewed 

- a can of
- a cup of
- an individual of/ a/ an (gor, the generic measure word)

and will introduce
- a bowl of
- a set/ portion of 

Learn to catch and respond to the following:
1) This is a gift for you!
2) Here are some red packets for you!
3) The bride/ groom (probably you) is very beautiful/ handsome today!
4) Let's kneel down
5) Call them Mom and Dad now
6) Pour some tea to Mom and Dad

You are going to attend a wedding and have Cantonese speaking mother-in-law and/or father-in-law. Learning some vocabulary and phrases will get you more involved or take some stress out of you. In part 1, you will learn some vocabulary that you may hear on the tea ceremony day. In part 2, you you will have to respond and react do different scenario. 

Someone compliments your Cantonese while in Hong Kong- you know how to respond. Someone asks you how long you have been in Hong Kong- you know how to respond to that. Someone asks you why did you come to Hong Kong- you also know how to respond to that. How about when someone asks you why do you want to learn Cantonese?

You and your friends are going to a restaurant. You invited Jenny, but without knowing Jenny also invited her friend. You were surprised, but still played cool, and asked, "how did you meet Jenny?" followed by questions we already learned: "What do you do?" , "where is Jenny?"

This is the second half of my student's short speech. You can practice your listening skills, then I will introduce your some potentially new vocabulary and sentence structure for you.

You and two of your friends are going to a new restaurant. You also invited your friend Jenny to come. On the day, one guy suddenly comes up to you and knows your name! You were not expecting this guy, but you use all the Cantonese you know to get acquaintance with him.   A conversation is included in this episode for listening practice. 

In the last part of our catch up, we spoke a bit what we have been up to during the lockdown and how the outbreak of virus changed our way of living. 

Manyee and I continued to chat about life in Chinese school. She said nobody would say they love going to Chinese school, and she didn't think quitting was even an option. I am sure she is glad she did, because she is not able to converse fluently and able to communicate with her relatives in Hong Kong with no problem. 

Earlier in May, I caught up with a friend who speaks perfect Cantonese. We had a chat about her life growing up in Birmingham and how her household only speak Cantonese.

So you ask "What is it/ what does that mean?". You find out they are into hiking, and so are you! You then say: "I like to go hiking as well. Where do you want to go?"

You were tasked to buy some drinks while in a party in Hong Kong! You got the drinks- your friends doubled checked if you have got the drinks they want. So they ask: did you buy water/ fizzy drinks/ beers? You said: yes, is this enough?

You will learn to ask in a polite way, using "ching man" plus " do you have ... ?".  We will also re-visit the structure "can we ... ?" and learn a new measure word- "gwun", meaning a can of drink.

There are 90, 10-minute recordings which covers the basic for you to visit Hong Kong or speak to a Cantonese speaking person. I am a language teacher and learner myself, and I truly believe recordings can get you a long way.  

This episode is an introduction and explains to you how to use the recording effectively. Each recording will be about 10 minutes, and I recommend listening to one episode a day. Feel free to go back as much as you need before progressing.
