new fully electric Volvo EX30 is designed to be as safe as you’d expect from us. It is designed to have the smallest CO2 footprint of any Volvo car to date, and to make people’s lives safer, more convenient and more enjoyable through cutting-edge technology and Scandinavian design.
Volvo hasn’t revealed the dimensions of its smallest offering, but according to various news reports, the EX30 measures in at 4,233 mm long, 1,837 mm wide and 1,55) mm tall, with a 2,650 mm-long wheelbase.
The minimalist Scandinavian design features Volvo's hallmark Thor's hammer headlamps, which frame the SUV's grilleless fascia. C-shaped LED tail lights punctuate the rear end, while the passengers inside are treated to an interior that balances a fairly spartan design with an interesting variety of materials and textures. Overhead, a massive glass roof lets in light, visually expanding the compact cabin.
A single large display graces the EX30's dashboard featuring the latest generation of Volvo's infotainment software with Google built-in, wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity and over-the-air update capability. Like the Tesla Model Y, there's no instrument cluster ahead of the EX30's steering wheel -- digital or otherwise -- so speed, range and real-time driving info live in a dedicated area along the top edge of the center screen. Volvo's designers continued to simplify the cabin, opting for a full-width Harman Kardon soundbar at the base of the windshield and consolidating the door locks and window controls on the center console to eliminate speakers and hardware from the doors, and opening up more space for storage.
Ambient lighting, digital phone-as-key and the latest generation of Volvo's driver assistance round out the small SUV's technology suite -- though the EX30 lacks the EX90's lidar hump.
The EX30 is built on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) electric platform that was developed by Geely, Volvo's Chinese parent company. The little ute is offered with two powertrains. There's a single-motor rear-wheel-drive configuration that generates 268 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant delivers a combined 422 horses and 400 pound-feet. Volvo claims that's enough punch to launch the EX30 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds.
Every EX30 features a 64.0-kWh battery pack. Volvo estimates a full charge will send the single-motor model 275 miles, while the extra motor is expected to shave 10 miles off that figure. Neither range rating has yet been certified by the EPA. With a peak charging rate of 153 kW, Volvo claims it takes about 27 minutes to charge the EX30's battery from 10 to 80 percent when plugged into a DC fast charger.
