S3E07 - Pink Cardigans of Justice

In this episode we find out who the traitor in the Council of the Great River (hint: it's not one of the unnamed extras). Things go sideways pretty quickly as Millie attempts to grab power with the help of the Camarilla. Because things never go wrong for native people when they put their trust in the American government, amirite?

Anacostia inexplicably thinks this would be an ideal time for her to peace out and go on her own side mission, so it's left to Abigail and Adil to defend the Marshalls and the other people in the Cession. Abigail kicks some ass, snaps some necks and is generally awesome as she rallies the witch army to subvert the Camarilla's plans.

Meanwhile, the unlikely duo of Tally and Scylla get together to free Thelma Bearkiller and the other Council members. They get an assist from the local Dodger community along the way.

Sarah Alder takes a trip to Spain where she runs into the former lore master of the Camarilla. They have a tense exchange but Alder gets the info she's looking for. You can tell the lore master wants to ask her a bunch of questions, but she just leaves him hanging. Literally.

Finally, Raelle returns! So I guess that means it's Scylla's turn to be kidnapped, because god forbid we get our gals in the same place this season. Having said that, we do get two favorite pairings back together, as Talder reunite to do some kind of back to the future magic spell and Anacostia and Nicte decide to join forces.

Sorry this episode took so long, but we're staying firm on our commitment to finish out the season, so we've still got 3 more to go. Hopefully we'll get them all out in 2023 ;)

S3E06 - Book Club Bandits

After a hiatus of approximately eleventy billion years, your trusty co-hosts are finally back on the mic and ready to recap the rest of season 3 of Motherland Fort Salem.

In this episode, the gang splits up to do a variety of side quests. Tally goes home to find her mother a little less peace-loving-hippie and a lot more let's-burn-this-mf'er-down. Abigail escorts Alder back to Fort Salem, where some people (Petra) are happy to see Abigail but other people (Feral Penelope) are a lot less pleased. Finally, Scylla and Edwin go on an epic road trip together, featuring lots of terrible dad jokes and some teary reunions with dead terrorist mushroom spouses.

Luckily everyone gets their errands done just in the nick of time, because an invasion force is headed right for the Cession. Ruh roh.

S3E05 - Meet the Council

In this surprisingly short episode, the Unit finally gets their day in court, as they are called before the Great River Council to answer for their mischief in the Cession. We love the diverse range of characters representing the seven languages and people of the Cession. Of particular interest is the salty Thelma Bearkiller, who makes an instant impact.

While the group awaits the verdict, Tally is busy trying to figure out if you can fight the future, or if fate is pre-determined and unchangeable. Alder shows off her mycellium vacation home to the other Stewards of the First Song, before she heads back to the surface to say hi to Tally and also to pulverize some Camarilla who dare to attack my precious Edwin Collar.

Alban Hearst yet again escapes his fate, which is annoying, though we love the campy goodness the actor continues to bring to the role.

Also: Anacostia and Sterling escape the Camarilla's clutches. But they have troubling intel to share, since the army that the Camarilla has assembled is pretty scary looking. Dun dun dun!

We review how we felt about the first half of Season 3 and what we're most looking forward to in the back half. We also take your questions. As always, we appreciate you leaving ratings or reviews on iTunes, Spotify and other platforms. Hit us up on Twitter (or Instagram and Tumblr) and talk with us about the show! S3E04 - President Wade Gets Some

In this episode, we get a variety of interesting pairings: some spicy (Nicte/Scylla), some sweet (Adil sexy dancing for Abigail), some sexy (Wade/Marshall), and some just packed with raw, unclassifiable chemistry (Tally and all her scene partners). Tally and M have a particularly nice moment where M discusses the difficulty navigating a witch world divided along gender lines as a non-binary person.

Meanwhile, the pairing of Anacostia and Sterling attend a very un-fun party, where they're made to fight to the death against other witches. Things get very stabby.

The Camarilla make their next move, as newly sworn in President Silver appoints a civilian oversight committee to make the witches' lives that much more miserable. I can't wait for Wade to come back and crush this bug, y'all.

Finally, Tally has visions of the future, and things like a little too explode-y for Raelle for my taste.

S3E03 - Roadhouse Reunion

In this episode, the Bellweather Unit gets even more fractured. Adil, Abigail and Tally seek out Khalida, but end up picking up Sarah Alder in the process. Talder fans had a good number of moments between Tally and Alder. Alder is definitely changed - no longer is she the stern general with the perfect hairdo. This Alder wants to nothing more than to drink tequila, eat nachos, and watch Tally Craven dance sexy for her. We here at the podcast approve of this new version. Alas, the fun can't go on forever, because Alder is on a quest to collect all the seeds of the First Song.

Meanwhile, Nicte and Scylla spend some quality time together working on their hand-to-hand combat techniques. It doesn't matter, because the Marshalls easily capture them, along with the rest of the unit. Cession jail looks nicer than real world jail, as the gang is imprisoned in a fancy old manor, where I'm sure tensions will stay low and no sexy times will be had.

Alban Hearst meets up with Kara Brandt and has a very confusingly sexually charged conversation with her. This inspires him to cut his vocal chords out, in favor of an upgrade.

Finally, President Wade tries to move against VP Silver, but the Camarilla beat her to the punch and blow up the White House before she can make a public address condemning the VP. Oh no!

S3E02 - When Camping Goes Terribly Wrong

In this episode, the Bellweather Unit sneaks into the Cession. Abigail is worried Scylla is going to steal Raelle away from them, but the Mycellium steals her away first, as she's sucked into the ground and put in a shiny prison somewhere in the earth. Nicte shows off her hamburger Phantom face to Tally, before unleashing some fun new acid and bat-related abilities on some unsuspecting Camarilla agents at a chemical factory. The unit manages to luck into capturing Alban Hearst, only to immediately allow him to escape once the dreaded Cession Marshalls show up on the scene. Khalida acts super suspicious before disappearing (or maybe being kidnapped, I don't know)

Meanwhile, in a much better subplot, Petra hosts a dinner party, M dazzles us with their snappy suit, and we are blessed with the return of two queens in the form of President Wade and Minerva Bellweather. VP Silver is set back in his plan for total domination for the moment, as Wade flexes her presidential power all over him with a rousing speech in support of equal rights for witches.

Also, Penelope Silver is back and 100% more insane than when we last saw her. She tries to choke out our beloved Izadora and is apparently able to transfer into a gaseous form at will. Also possibly insane? The Mycellium network, which does a very creepy "Mother will protect you, my dear" act with Raelle. Yikes.

S3E01 - Tomato Stealing Bitches

After a short hiatus, we are back recapping all the action on season 3 of Motherland Fort Salem! We enjoy a riveting hour of the girls moving boxes around a warehouse and living that not-so-glamourous dodger lifestyle. Raylla are hot and heavy, just how we like them. Adil has a case of the baby-crazies and Abigail isn't totally shooting that idea down. Tally and Nicte spend quality time on the roof together being sexy and talking about the future (literally).

Abigail and Tally team up to ruin it for everyone with their selfish and reckless behavior, as they manage to blow the cover of dozens of dodgers by being super suspicious and leading the authorities right to the secret warehouse. Daddy Dodger is not amused and neither is Scylla.

Meanwhile, VP Silver is up to his old tricks alongside Albin Hearst and a new evil blonde lady. What evil plots do they have in store for our witches and the mycellium network, hmmm? Thankfully we have a clue, thanks to super spy M on the case.

Also, Penelope might be back, but in the form of a vengeful rain cloud. Definitely back? Sarah Alder (yeeeeeeeaaaah), freshly sprung from the earth somewhere in Spain and looking better than ever.

Buckle up as we navigate the wild ride that season 3 is sure to hold for us.

Minisode: Arcane on Netflix and Videogames w/LGBTQ+ characters

On this special bonus mini-episode of the podcast we delve into the world of Piltover and Zaun as we discuss the new Netflix/Riot Games animated series Arcane. What happens when you take a videogame with tons of lore and let an animation studio loose? Apparently magic, because we found a lot to love about the series so far.

We then pivot and use that as a jumping off point to talk about some videogames we have known and loved that feature queer characters. So if you're looking for some fun new games to play (or want to revisit your happy memories of them), check this one out.

Bonus materials discussed on the show:

S2E10 - Boarding the Party Bus to Revolution Town

In this bonkers season finale, Sarah Alder's retirement starts out on a pretty crappy note, as she loses all her Biddies, turns into a Groot, kinda dies but maybe doesn't? We have no idea where we go from here, but at least there's a chance we might see Alder again before this wild ride is over.

Meanwhile, Petra takes the reins of power just in time for all hell to break loose, as the Camarilla descend on Fort Salem. Anacostia says goodbye to her mother figure. They both figure they'll try and work within the system to enact change.

Khalida joins her brother in choosing violence this day, as she lava bends a dude to death. It's pretty awesome. More awesome? She and Adil are joining the newly formed Militia on the Run, as they team up with the Trio (who are now on the lam from law enforcement), Quinn, Scylla and Nicte.

Tally loses a mentee, but gains a new psychotic best friend, as we say goodbye to innocent Penelope Silver and hello to sexy swaggering Nicte joining the crew. Nicte is handy both for her fun nicknames she gives the group, as well as her ability to summon a pretty swank party bus for the Militia to drive off into the sunset in.

Most important: we get both a Raylla "I love you" moment and are blessed with an in-person reunion culminated with one heck of a kiss. FINALLY.

S2E09 - Don't Cry For Me, Fort Salem

(as sung by Sarah Alder)

Don't cry for me, Fort Salem
The truth is
I totally founded you
All through my war days
My long existence
I sang a sad song and
brought the Mycelium into existence

....

The penultimate episode blew everything up - Alder's out, Petra's in, Nicte gets a temporary reprieve, the Camarilla and their witch plague are on the loose in Fort Salem, and oh, the mycelium is made of dead witches. Crazy episode, with some crazy good performances. Hear us scream about all that, plus we answer all your burning questions.

S2E08 - The Timeless Art of Casual Hand Touching

In this episode, Raelle and Scylla finally spend quality time together and have their big dramatic kiss as the musical score soars and the fandom swoons. It's super sweet and super romantic, and honestly, we could die happy right about now. Disappointingly, our Raylla reunion is short lived, as Scylla chooses freedom and pancakes over hanging around with the Army.

If that wasn't enough, we also got a serious dose of Talder goodness in the episode, as Nicte's delusion spell reveals the depths of Tally's MILF-y fantasies about Sarah Alder.

The trio bicker, fight but ultimately rally for one another (with the help of a certain Necro) and manage to finally bring down Nicte Batan. Or so they think... Nicte takes advantage of this moment to try one final assassination attempt on Alder's life, wearing her best Tally disguise.

Also, Petra makes her own move at Alder, starting to line up the political winds in her favor. Do we sense a power grab in our near future? What will Alder do as her enemies get ever closer?

S2E07 - Crushed To See You Go

In this episode, Raelle is crushed both figuratively (her mom dying) and literally (by a giant weight). She's subjected to a variety of diabolically ingenious tortures by the Camarilla, who hope to unlock the secrets of her very special mushroom bending powers. Luckily for her, she's got a cute little murder nugget ex-girlfriend, a fierce Mama, and two dumb but lucky friends who are all converging on her location to save the day. Sadly, Mama Collar doesn't make it out alive.

We also see Adil continue his slow yet inevitable slide to the dark side, as we see him unleash his Tarim powers in exciting but troubling new ways. Also, Abigail melts a guy's face off, but let's be honest... we knew she had that in her, so no surprises there.

Finally, Tally and Alder have a squabble, but then Nicte presses her luck and tries to murder Sarah again. Tally leaps to her lady's defense, uncovering a compromised Biddy in the process.

We end on the long awaited Raylla reunion, and I swear to god, they better get to smooching next week or we will have things to say next week on the podcast.

S2E06 - My Three Subplots

Adil gets a chance to party Bellweather style over the fall break from school. Ain't no party like a Bellweather party because a Bellweather party is polyamorous and dominated by badass women. There's also some light exhuming of corpses.

Meanwhile, Team Army and Team Spree face off over the future of little Tiffany and also Alder's life. While Nicte is dicking around trying to off Alder, Willa and Scylla are busy focusing on the real enemy. They take down the location where Tiffany and the other kids were being held, but it's too late: not only have the kids been moved, but the Camarilla have already moved onto their next target: Raelle. *Dun dun dun!*

We finally get to see a bit more of life in the Cession, which is comprised mostly of good natured salt of the earth people, cute lesbian chic fashion, and other small town touches. Taylor blows the fan base away with her lovely singing, but we get too little of that, and too much of the Camarilla hurting our poor little baby. Tally is surprisingly not helpful.

S2E05 - Let Me Just Pencil You In (For Death)

In this episode, Scylla goes full murder muppet on us, killing two men in the span of two days. But it's okay, because they totally deserve it.

She and Anacostia complete their infiltration of the Camarilla party, but instead of getting more intel, they end up picking up a new baby witch and some fresh bruises as they fight Jack Orsotti and the Camarilla Exarch. Later, Scylla opens up her death ledger and pencils in Shane. Literally.

Meanwhile, Abigail continues to dwell in her various traumas and failures, until a visit with Ghost Charvelle shakes her out of her funk. She has a new mission now. That mission? Murderous vengeance. In a surprise twist, Adil has decided to join her in this mission, after he barely survives an assassination attempt by the Camarilla's scary new Venom-like virus bomb.

Tally confronts Alder, but it sadly does not end with a kiss. However, she does meet up with Ghost Velda Estherbrook, who confirms that Sarah Alder is a lying liar who lies a lot.

Raelle misses her mom, and it's very sad. Gregorio makes me cry by unexpectedly bringing up Libba. Eliot continues his personal assault on Jessie's psyche by incorporating another of her biggest phobias into the show.

S2E04 - Protestor Party Time

In this episode, Abigail has a Very Bad Day. Adil breaks up with her (just when I was starting to enjoy them as a couple), her mom is still pushing Gregorio as an option, and she's also almost murdered by the Camarilla. Luckily, the squad has her back and saves the day at the last minute. Tally gets closer to solving the mystery of Sgt Nicte Bataan and the incident in Liberia. Raelle gets closer to a possible reunion with Scylla. We get closer to Talder finaly happening. It's all a lot to process, y'all.

S2E03 - No More Breakfast At Tiffany's

In this episode we FINALLY learn the name of the mysterious woman in Tally/Alder's flashback. We have a feeling that Nicte will be a formidable character once she finally enters the battlefield. Is she the founder of the Spree as we've speculated? We'll have to wait and see.

Speaking of the Spree, top secret agent Scylla is on the case infiltrating a Camarilla operation, but this time she's lucky to have along Anacostia, who gets her out of a jam (while having some cracking dialogue while they're on stake out). If you don't want us to ship QuarterHorn why Quarterhorn so sexy, hmmmm?

Meanwhile, Raelle learns mushroom bending, Abigail learns the danger of playing with storm spells you don't really understand, and we learn that Tally has chemistry with literally every other character she comes across. What a great episode.

Mother tongue, talking severed heads, creepy baby dolls, and a trip to the mall…. This episode has it all!

In this episode, we get introduced to not one, not two, but SEVEN new characters. We meet two members of the Sekmet coven - the intriguing M and Libba’s old flame Gregorio. Tally gets a new mentee that she can teach about how awesome Sarah Alder is. Abigail gets the bad news that she’s tested negative for both Witchbomb-ability and Khalida’s approval. Scylla is forced to team up with Anacostia and she hates it, even though we all love it.

What’s the deal with the mystery woman in Tally/Alder’s flashback? How many ways will Mad Eye Magda find to torment the Non-Canon class? Does M have any other expressions other than hot and smirking? When will Talder kiss? We discuss all this and more on the latest episode of the podcast.

S2E01 - Welcome Back to Fort Salem

After what felt like an eternity, Motherland:Fort Salem is finally back on our screens with season 2, which means your trusty podcast hosts are back for another year of fangirl shenanigans too! In this episode we break down Season 2 - Episode 1 In The Blood.

We catch up with our favorite witchy women where we left them last season. What will be the long term impact of Tally becoming a Biddy, and what's her deal now with Alder? Will Raelle and Abigail unlock the power of the witchbomb? When will Scylla and Anacostia team up? Why does Willa Collar look so goddamn good in that suit? We debate all these things and more. We also welcome some intriguing new cast members to the show and discuss their potential future impact on the storyline.

We debated trying to cut the episode run time down more, but screw it... if Zack Snyder can release a 4 hour cut of Justice League, then we can release a 76 minute cut of this podcast.

Bonus: Gideon the Ninth book discussion

On this bonus episode of the podcast, we take a tour through another type of magically driven story, as we take a break from Motherland: Fort Salem to explore Tamsyn Muir's wonderful novel Gideon the Ninth.

We break down all the things we loved about Gideon, from the genre mashups, to the swarthy, swordwielding useless lesbians. We discuss the fascinating take on necromancy and delve into the central mystery of the novel. Finally, we answer some questions about the book from our fans.

"Lesbian necromancers explore a haunted gothic palace in space!" doesn't begin to scratch the surface of what this book has in store for you, so join us in exploring the ins and outs of all things Gideon, Harrow, and the Nine Houses of the Empire.

Ep 10 part 2 - WHAT

We wrap up the final episode of Motherland: Fort Salem in today's podcast. We go over the insane action in the final half of season 1 episode 10. The Camarilla finally make their long anticipated appearance on the battlefield. Apparently membership in this group requires you to dress like a fascist douchebag.

Our notes from the battle sequence are as follows: "They all fight. Abigail cuts a dude’s throat! Alder casts a force lightning spell! The Biddies melt a guy! But Biddies start to drop like flies. TALLY OFFERS HERSELF TO ALDER WHAT IS HAPPENING?! HOLY SHIT. Alder cuts a guy in half. Raelle gets stabbed! Abigail runs to her. She can’t save her, but refuses to break the link even though it’ll drag her down with Raelle. They exchange what they think are final goodbyes. I LOVE YOU SHITBIRD. WHAT?!"

Ahem... also, Anacostia lets Scylla go but maybe not just out the goodness of her heart. Oh yeah, and there's the small matter of Willa Collar still freaking being alive to deal with. Jeeeeeeeez. What a season finale.

Ep 10 part 1 - Fortunate Daughter

We had so many thoughts about episode 110 of Motherland: Fort Salem that we had to record a two-part series of podcasts about it. Miraculously, we don't just wail into the microphone for 120 minutes, because believe me, that was a very real possibility.

In part one, we join our girls on Graduation Day, where their hopes and dreams of moving on to war college are promptly smashed by General Alder, who has not forgotten about their meddling from last episode. Their punishment is immediate deployment into battle. However, lucky for the trio they're not the only young girls meddling in Alder's affairs, as Khalida intervenes and gets them assigned to the mission to save the remaining Tarim tribe. Petra also gets involved and scores Abigail a position at war college anyway, but if you think our queen is about to abandon her girls to be deployed without her, you don't know her at all.

Meanwhile, Anacostia and Scylla continue their game of psychological warfare, before pausing to talk about their family back stories for awhile.

Out in the battlefield, we break down a fairly important scene between Alder and the Bellweather unit where all sides come to an unexpected understanding of each other, after some airing of grievances. Adil is there too, but he's just there to provide exposition and look cute in his little combat hoodie.

Ep 9 - Coup Coup Coup-choo

On this week's podcast, SO MUCH HAPPENED. The dynamic trio tries to figure out which adult figure they can trust with the truth about what happened to the hostages during City Drop. Abigail gives a heartfelt eulogy, as we say goodbye to Libba Swythe and the fledgling ship that never was (RIP #Libbagail). We also see a new threat enter the playing field, as we're introduced to the throat ripping bad boys known at The Camarilla. Anacostia attempts to understand Scylla, but all Scylla wants to do is reunite with her girlfriend. Girl, be careful what you wish for.

Meanwhile, we discuss why all the mommy figures let us down this week, as Petra reverts to her normal cold self with Abigail and Alder shows her true colors to surrogate daughter Anacostia. Alder also goes head-to-head with two powerful women, as both Khalida and President Wade attempt to defy her. It does not go well for President Wade in particular.

We also discuss Gerit's ill-advised attempt to have his cake and eat it too, as he tricks Tally into a potential threesome with his now-wife Hilary. And while we in the audience might be totally down for it, Tally is not, so this is yet another bump on the road for Team Cravenwood.

We have only one episode left this season! What will happen? What is keeping us up at night thinking about the finale? Tune in to find out on today's podcast.

Ep 8 - CityDrop Truck Stop

In this episode we break down the action for episode 108 of Motherland: Fort Salem. Our girls go on their very first field exercise, and it.... does not go well. Abigail unleashes her inner PTSD rage monster on an unsuspecting instructor, and spends quality time with her best frenemy. Tally breaks her leg and then breaks Raelle's heart when she accidentally reveals that Scylla is a Spree and that she was the one who turned her in. Raelle is her usual hot mess, going after Tally and then Anacostia, before finally admitting the truth that she's probably known all along. She then smashes the Spree leader's face and our hearts when she rejects Scylla metaphorically and literally.

Meanwhile, Anacostia Quartermaine is a fierce mama bear and we couldn't love her more, and Alder once again proves that she's willing to sacrifice as many innocents as it takes to achieve her end goals. Libba Swythe endears herself to us and makes a strong case for shipping Libbagail, before meeting her tragic early demise. RIP to our favorite Mean Girl. Also, as a bonus, we spend a quality minute and a half talking about how hot Lt Helen Graves is (girl, please call me).

Ep 7 - Snacking on Broken Glass

In today's super sized episode we break down episode 107 of Motherland: Fort Salem. We learn that we can have a scene where every single character is probably in the wrong but we can still love them anyway. We also learn that you should probably skip lunch when you're being interrogated by witches, and that you should probably never make Anacostia angry at you. We discuss the revelations of Scylla's first day with the Spree and how we think the character's redemption arc needs to go.

We also explore the exciting new powers and characters introduced into the story by the Tarim tribe of witches. Khalida is one scary little girl! Adil is so dreamy! Abigail is so funny trying to flirt with him!

Finally, we spend a good ten minutes breaking down THAT SCENE between Raelle and Scylla. You know the one we're talking about.

Ep 6 - Everybody Hurts

I hope you like grief, because we've got that with a generous helping of PTSD on the side. On this episode, each of our witches deals with trauma in their own way, as Abigail is haunted by the aftermath of her cousin's murder, Raelle seaches desperately for Scylla, and Tally struggles with her own secrets. We do take the time to appreciate the new additions to the cast and to ponder what secret spells the Tarim tribe might be hiding.

Also, do you think we'd look hot with an eyepatch? Because Bridey's got us thinking all kinds of thoughts in her memorable debut in this episode.

Ep 5 - It's A Nice Day For A Red Wedding

Oh boy. Episode 105 of Motherland: Fort Salem was a doozy. It doesn't matter which pairing you ship, because all our ships went down in flames in the most heartbreaking fashion this week. We break down the demise of #Cravenwood, mourn Charvelle Bellweather (we barely got to know you!), and immediately enlist in the Protect Abigail At All Costs army. Mostly cruelly of all, we watch Raelle and Scylla have insanely romantic and wonderful moments, right before it all goes wrong.
