Miwa Matreyek combines animation and live shadow to create a magical spectacle uniquely her own. She creates live, staged performances in which she interacts with her animation as a shadow silhouette. Her work exists at the intersection of the cinematic and theatrical, the fantastical and tangible, the illusionistic and physical, often incorporating surreal and poetic narratives related to conflict between humanity, nature, and the climate crisis.
Miwa’s work is fantastical yet emotionally impactful, often weaving in narratives of creation and destruction, man vs nature. Her shows have moved audiences around the world.

The artist’s shadow is constantly present in this piece from beginning to end - sometimes in semi close-up and sometimes as a full figure - as the world around her shifts and transforms. Her shadow becomes an integral part of her own fantastical animation worlds, as she traverses oceanscapes, cityscapes, and domestic spaces to conjure dreamlike scenes with ligh and shadow. This piece was premiered at TED Global 2010 in Oxford, England, and havesince toured internationally, including ISEA Conference, TBA festival, Paris, France, San Francisco, CA, Edinburgh, Scotland, and more countries.

This World Made Itself is a visually rich journey through the history of the earth, from the universe’s epic beginnings to the complex world of humanity. The piece is at once scientif- ic (like flipping through a children’s encyclopedia), and emotional, surreal, and dream like. Some notable presentation of this work include Lincoln Center (New York), MOMA (New York), Sundance Film Festival New Frontiers (Park City), and more.

Infinitely Yours explores global warming, the Anthropocene, and the vastly changing earth.
This piece attempts to physicalize and emotionalize the non-stop barrage of news streaming
in through our screens, of environmental transformation that we can’t seem to hit pause or
rewind on. Miwa takes on plastics in the oceans, de-forestation, food crisis, drought, super
storms and much more in a cacophony of dream-like, kaleidoscopic imagery.

Miwa Matreyek is an animator, director, designer, and performer based in Los Angeles.
She has been an internationally touring independent artist since 2010. She creates live, staged performances where she interacts with her animations as a shadow silhouette, at the cross section of cinematic and theatrical, fantastical and tangible, illusionistic and physical. Her work exists in a dreamlike visual space that makes invisible worlds visible, often weaving surreal and poetic narratives of conflict between man and nature. Her work exists both at the realm of the hand-made and tech. She traveling as a one woman show, often incorporat-
ing artist talks and workshops.
