April 19, 1975: India Launched its First Satellite Aryabhatta | Firstpost Rewind

On this day in 1975, India's first satellite, Aryabhatta, was launched by a Soviet rocket. Initially, the satellite was supposed to be launched with the help of the US but in 1971, then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi received a message from Moscow, offering to assist India in the launch. Finally, India decided to take accept the Soviet Union’s offer.
