Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Tony Glover to look back at a mad match against the Hatters last Saturday.

In part one we ask did Poch get the line upright as Chelsea made a eally good start but a terrible finish. For once goals were not the problem - Palmer is different class and a great finish from Madueke with a great build up too. Jackson divided opinion but got kicked a lot, played some good balls through tracked back and defended well too. He looks better out wide than up front. Broja on the other hand…

In part two we look at the second half where Chelsea went all Dracula, with Chong and Doughty outstanding as Luton could have scored 4 or 5. Silva was the reason they didn’t. He’s still a cut above but does he need better than Disasi or Badiashile next to him. Perhaps Colwill when Chilwell returns?

Petrovic was superb again making some good saves and kicking long; a great tactical move to negate Luton which worked until Luton went wide. But did Poch get it wrong with his subs and game management? Is there a hint of Spursyness about how we let teams back in?

However, we won which is what it’s about and was much needed. Chelsea are not far off European places, the season is not over yet with injured players to return and other teams have poor form and injuries (Utd and Newcastle). Will Chelsea improve and gel more in 2024?

In part three we say thank fuck 2023 is over, recall the best and worst moments and ask how bad was it? We wrap up looking ahead to what 2024 might bring for Chelsea.

In part two we look back at the defeat to Wolves: a case of same shit different day – the better team but hopeless up front. We discuss Sterling’s criminal miss, Nkunku’s debut, the team's poor discipline and Chelsea's dreadful away form.

In part three we look ahead to Saturday's match against Luton. JK reports on Pochettino's press conference and Chidge reveals his team selection. Luton will be a tough nut to crack away and Ross Barkley will have something to prove against his old team. With our poor away form will Chelsea achieve another unwelcome record? We discuss how will it go and give our predictions and wrap up with 'They Played for Both'.

In Chidge’s team selection we ponder whether Poch will pick proper full backs? Will Nkunku to start? Is Enzo out? Will we play in a 4:2:3:1 formation?

In part one although Chelsea did alright, better than Utd and Newcastle with plenty of possession and attacks and shots on goal they didn’t really look like scoring and looked typically vulnerable in defence. The folly of not having a decent striker is exposed again. Is there a lack of quality in the side? Did Everton, a gnarly experienced, streetwise PL side just want it more? And to add injury to insult, James goes off again in what is becoming a tragedy. What's his future at the club?

In part two, with 10 wins in the last 45 are we concerned by what is relegation form? The mood seems to be changing regarding Chelsea's recruitment team and the owners, so what happens next? Pochettino alludes to going to the transfer market to solve the problems – is this realistic?

In Part one we discuss another mad game where Chelsea cruised to a 2:0 lead before easing off and getting punished and Gallagher being sent off. But instead of capitulating, Chelsea defended well in the second half, extended their lead before giving us all a nervy 10 minutes as Brighton got a second goal. Entertaining, yes, but watching Chelsea at the moment can age you!

In part two we discuss an important win where the team showed character, playing for 60 minutes with 10 men. We also discuss where Chelsea are in terms of competing at the moment and is it time to move on from the years of dominance under Roman Abramovich?

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Mark Meehan to look back on a remarkable match against Man City on Sunday.

In part one we discuss Chelsea's electric start almost scuppered by Antony Taylor's poor decision for the penalty and great comeback to lead 2:1 before the sucker punch either side of half-time. But Chelsea stuck at it, going toe to toe with City and goal for goal, before Ice Cold Palmer equalised with minutes remaining. Palmer, Sterling, Cucurella, Gallagher and James were outstanding and Sanchez made some great saves. Poch got his subs spot on, with Broja getting the foul that led to the last minute penalty.

In part two we reflect on a brilliant week for Chelsea, arguably the best it's been since winning the FIFA Club World Cup in February 2022. It seems we've turned a corner and the team has evolved, showing bravery, confidence, resilience and playing front foot attacking football and breaking free of the turgid tippy tappy sideways borefest of recent years. A real bond seems to be growing between players and manager and indeed the crowd who were the loudest we've heard for years and from all four stands. While there will inevitably be some downs to come, a bright future is emerging.

In one of the maddest matches we have ever seen, Chelsea recovered from being under the kosh and 1-0 down to see Spurs lose the plot, go down to 9 men, play an inexplicable high line and get thumped 4-1. And to cap it all, Chelsea's hapless striker, Jackson, netted a hat-trick. But it was not all plain sailing, even against 9 men. VAR contrived to disallow 5 goals and none of us who were there had a scooby as to what was going on.

But at the end of the day "Tottenham get battered everywhere they go" and that's all that mattered!!!

Sterling was superb in the second half and this is the Sterling we want to see. Cole Palmer gets off the mark – is he what we wanted from Havertz? Pressing is the key and Gallagher is the key to the press.

In part two as appreciation of Disasi. Is he underrated and could be a good pairing with Badiashile. It was more Barbados than Burnley on saturday, with fantastic away support again but is a bond between the players and fans growing. 3 wins in 3 = momentum but now frustratingly an International Break with some tough games coming up afterwards.

The midfield looked very solid with Caicedo as the 6 and Conor and Fernandez as 8’s and the defence didn’t give Fulham a sniff.

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Martin Wickham to look back on muggy 3-1 defeat away to West Ham.

In part one we discuss another poor start, a great goal by Chukwuemeka and a poor penalty from Enzo, which arguably turned the match. Why didn't Jackson take it? And then a comedy of errors from Disasi and Colwill led to an Antonio scorcher which turned it in West Ham's favour.

In part two we discuss whether Mudryk is being weighed down by expectations. Sterling gets the plaudits for a decent performance. Jackson impressed again but was out muscled by two giants, on his own and crowded out. Caicedo probably shouldn't have come on and unsurprisingly looked at sea and off the pace - not his fault. Pochettino needs to sort his system out and play the formation that best suits the players he has available.  West Ham away was a reality check and it’s going to take time to gel this team.

Stamford Chidge interviews Chelsea author Neil Fitzsimon about his new book 'Rebirth of the Blues'.

Having chronicled Chelsea's 1970 FA Cup winning side in 'Rhapsody in Blue' and Eddie McCreadie's promotion side in 'A Deeper Shade of Blue', Neil has turned his sights to the period between 1977-1985.

One of the nost turbulent periods in Chelsea's history, it was a period when Chelsea narrowly escaped relegation into the Third Division in 1983, before being resurrected under the management of John Neal when the likes of Kerry Dixon, Pat Nevin and others catapulted the club to new glories. The next year, Chelsea took the Second Division by storm with their new brand of quicksilver flowing football to make a triumphant return to the top flight as champions.

But Rebirth of the Blues is more than just a chronicle of football history. It’s a gripping memoir of a Chelsea fan growing up in the late 1970s to mid-80s and his experiences of living through the political unrest of Thatcherite Britain when excess and greed were seen as ideals to be admired. Fitzsimon recalls his tentative first steps with girlfriends, the changing face of the music scene and what it was like to be single and one of the lads.

Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd (from his hospital bed!), Clayton Beerman and Dayne Whittle to review the last match of the season against Newcastle.

And breathe. Yes, Chelsea's worst season for nearly 30 years is finally consigned to the dustbin where it belongs. We look back at the last match against Newcastle, where Chelsea did ok against a Newcastle side clearly sipping cocktails on the beach. The usual profligacy in front of goal by Chelsea; why break the cycle eh lads? Of more interest was who might be playing their last game? Azpi with a superb banner to honour him? Loftus-Cheek who gave the "I'm off" clap to all four stands in the ground? Mason Mount who looked tearful in the lap of appreciation.

We know Frank is off and he got a well deserved warm send off. But it's now "Hello, hello, Pochettino; Pochettino!" as our new manager has been announced. Interestingly one of his first decisions may have been to refuse to put an offer in on Felix who is set to return to Atletico Madrid. We wrap up part one with a chat about a fantastic evening at the 1983/84 re-union at Under the Bridge on Saturday night.

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd look back at another painfuil Chelsea defeat, away to Man Utd and ahead to the last match of the season at home to Newcastle Utd.

In part one we discuss a better 1st half performance but Keystone Kop defending and inability to finish kill us again. Midfield looked better – well done Chuk and Hall impressed again, but in defence, Fofana instigated the collapse in the second half with two poor mistakes. At least Felix scored a good consolation goal. Are there parallels with the 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford meted out in his first match in charge in 2019? And how valid are his comments about poor attitude from training ground to pitch? And respect to the superb Chelsea away support, who out sang Utd from start to finish.

In part two we look ahead to the match against Newcastle United. Will Frank play 'da Yoof' again or go for experience in his last match at the helm? While Chelsea has been breaking all the wrong records this season, they do have an imperious record at home v Newcastle with only 1 defeat at home in PL history. We ask whether Newcastle will still be hungry or on the beach? Are we worried about their goal threat (2.5 goals per game on the road) and can we expect more shit housery?

Do we expect a toxic atmosphere at the Bridge if we lose again? And what can we expect from the Lap of Appreciation? We wrap up with our predictions.

In part one Franks team changes beg more questions: is Frank under orders, down to the bare bones or just clueless? More Keystone Kops defending cost us again. In fairness, we didn’t play too badly as in we didn’t get hammered!! But its not really good enough, is it? And why having been held back from the England U20 squad did Chukwuemeke only come on with 9 minutes to go? The season really needs to end doesn't it?

In part two we look ahead to Thursday night's match against Man Utd kicking off with Chidge's team selection. Will Frank heed his advice? Very probably not!! Utd will still have one eye on Liverpool who have a better goal difference, if Utd lose against us and Fulham at home (Liverpool away v Southampton). Utd only lost once at home in the league this season – v Brighton 1st match. Given this dare we hope for a win for Chelsea?

In part three we wrap up the show with a couple of listener emails.

In part one we look back at Chelsea's 3-1 defeat away to Arsenal and ask Azpi why? Kova why? Sterling why? No Mudryk or Gallagher why? Yet again Chelsea showed No pressing, no effort, no responsibility in a shambolic performance. Raheem Sterling – what a waste of money! The return of Keystone Kops defending. But, we scored a goal – well done Mudueke! And it was great support from those who stayed.

In part two we look ahead to the match against Bournemouth on Saturday, kicking off with Chidge's team selection. On the bleak side we haven’t lost 7 in a row since 1961 and 5 PL matches since 1993 – Chelsea always making history! Bournemouth on a good run – will they be on the beach? But they have high energy and intensity – everything we don’t – is this a concern?

We also talk about Boehly’s comments and ask should he talk to the fans about what's going on at Chelsea rather than the financial press? Should Lukaku get another go next season Should Frank have a role at Chelsea going forward?

Sterling what an overpaid xxxx. A typical own goal shooting us in the foot but does a proper keeper clean the corners out? The changes at half time worked - Auba and Mudryk and 4:3:3 - but Frank should have taken Sterling off too, but there was more energy and purpose and we looked better with a centre forward on and we coped well defensively. But the second goal killed it. At the moment Chelsea are statistically horrific with one point and one goal in 5 games and bottom of the table on form. This is on Boehly AND the players.

In part two we celebrate 15 years of the Chelsea FanCast with some of our listeners favourite memories from 1035 shows and 15 years.

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Martin Wickham to look back at Chelsea's exit from the Champions' League and ahead to wednesday nights match against Brentford.

In part one we look back at the seemingly inevitable defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions' League quarter final second leg. Frank's team selection seemed strange given we needed to score three goals and although we huffed and puffed, once Madrid scored it was all over. In truth Madrid didn't really need to get out of second gear over the two legs. And as Chelsea say goodbye to the Champions' League, how long will it be before we are back?

Looking at the on-going saga of who Chelsea's manager will be, we discuss whether or not Mauricio Pochetino would be a good appointment considering where Chelsea is at currently.

On part two we look ahead to the match against Brentford on wednesday night, starting with Chidge's team selection. Can Chelsea score a goal? Has the team already chuck the season in? Will we win another game this season?

There is some hope as Brentford's form has dipped recently, but it won't be easy in the context of Chelsea's recent performances, making predictions especially difficult. We give it a go anyway!

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Clayton Beerman to look back at a poor defeat at home to Brighton and ahead to Real Madrid in the Champions' League.

In part one we ask were there too many changes? Not enough continuity or were players rested for Real? Kepa was excellent but other than that there was no leadership, no spine, no attack, no energy and fitness and no hope. Meanwhile Brighton were everything we are not – aggressive one touch football; going forward quickly with end product. With no sign of form turning around we ask can we still get relegated?

In part two we discuss the crowd having enough of it all. With Chelsea finding themselves in a perfect storm of shit: players who should have been sold; players who want away; players who think they’ll be sold; interim manager with no focus; new owners who have turned it upside down. The season can't finish soon enough. What will the long-term damage be given how much time Chelsea will need to re-build; the possibility of a FFP fire sale and revenue down with no Europe…

In part three we preview the second leg of the Champions' League quarter-final against Real Madrid. How will Frank set up the team with no Koulibaly and Chilwell? How are we going to score 3 goals? And do we have to score first and by going on the attack do we leave ourselves vulnerable to getting thumped?

And with one shot on target all game, why do we get so many shots blocked?

In part two we ask has Frank taken on a poisoned chalice? What can he do/must he do? How much of a mess are we in right now. Which players top the clear out list? And if it came to a choice would you choose Felix or Mount?

In part three we look ahead to the Real Madrid match looking at Chidge's team selection. Will he go back three at the back or four. And given Tuchel went four at the back when we beat them last year, should Frank be do the same.

Worryingly Real Madrid are all in on the CL having lost 3:2 at home to Villareal scuppering chances of the La Liga title. What is the likely Real line up? Will Chelsea raise their game? Hopefully, Chelsea can stay in the tie and don’t get thumped.

Stamford Chidge and Mark Worrall interview Chelsea season ticket holder Paul Ride about his book 'Ride to Hell'.

Born and bred in Chelsea, Chelsea season ticket holder, Paul Ride, a trained chef, was working as a contract catering manager in Kuwait in the early 1990s. He was initially assigned to a company tasked with extinguishing oil well fires started by the Iraq military in 1991 as they retreated from the country due to the advance of United States-led Gulf War coalition forces.

June 28th 1992 began like every other day for Ride. An early morning start to deliver packed lunches and pick up bread from a bakery. A delay left him with time to kill so he decided to visit an old colleague working at a United Nations facility in northern Kuwait close to the border with Iraq – a border he was coerced into crossing by a gun-toting Iraqi soldier.

Accused of spying, Ride was taken hostage and repeatedly interrogated by the Mukhabarat, Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein’s murderous secret police. Eventually charged with illegal entry, he was sentenced to seven years in jail and transferred to Abu Ghraib, a notorious maximum-security prison close to Baghdad.

‘Ride To Hell: Prisoner Of A Dubious Peace’ is Paul Ride’s gripping first-hand account of his traumatic incarceration, its devastating personal consequences, and his ongoing quest for justice, compensation, and an understanding of why the UK Government seemingly allowed him to fall through the diplomatic cracks that existed at that time.

Throughout this hellish experience, Paul still managed to find out what Chelsea's (often poor!) results were thanks to the BBC World Service and letters from supporters who had been alerted to his plight through the media and Ken Bates who encouraged supporters to correspond with him.

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Martin Wickham to review another Chelsea match and another defeat, but this one, to Spurs, is indefensible.

In part one, we look at Potter's team selection and bemoan Chelsea being incapabale of scoring. It seems an air of resignation has set in with the supporters. When we concede it's game over. Why are Chelsea so poor in adversity? No goals, no fight, no clue, it's a case of wash, rinse, repeat with nothing changing and we ask what’s the point?

In part two, we ask why not play James and Chilwell at wing back, now we have 5 centre backs available? We discuss the strange rescinding of Ziyech's red card. Applaud Mount for being the only player who seems to get it and for showing some fight. We face up to the fact that 'it’s relegation form folks isn’t it' and why should we accept the process if the process is the wrong process? And for that matter, why should the owners?

In part one we give an appreciation of legendary football commentator, John Motson, who for many of us was the voice of football when we were growing up. Adam and JK report on Potter’s Presser and we ask what does Potter need to do to turn it round; what happens if he wins or loses next 3 matches and how much are Boehly and Co culpable for the current mess?

In part two, Chidge reveals his team selection for the Spurs match. Should Potter go back to his Dortmund selection? Should Mount and James play as they get the himportance of the fixture. Will Conte's absence be agood or bad thing for Chelsea? Will beating Spurs help Potter in getting the fans on side and will he be able to get the players at it and up for it? We wrap up with out predictions for the match.

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Dean Mears to look back at a dreadful defeat at home to bottom of the league Southampton.

In part one we discuss an indefensible performance, devoid of inspiration. Did Potter make too many changes? Is no consistency of selection hampering progress and has Potter been hamstrung by the need to protect players coming back from injury. There was no pattern, no organisation, no finishing and no clue and all this against a Southampton team bottom of the league, with an awful record and no manager. Simply unacceptable.

Arguably of more concern was the injury to Cesar Azpilicueta who recieved a terrible kick in the head thanks to a badly directed overhead kick. .Our best wishes go to 'Dave' for a speedy recovery.

And Chidge & JK have come up with a couple of songs to cheer you up or depress you further...

In part two we ask is Potters out of his depth; not elite level and not the leader or personality Chelsea needs? Is he wasting players? I.e., making them worse? He’s lost the match day support; if he loses to Spurs, Leeds and then BVB knock us out of the Champions' League, surely his position is untenable.

We could argue he should go now but who could/should replace him - temporarily and/or permanently? And how much of this is on Boehly and Co? Are they stubborn or clueless? 

And a timely reminder that whilst it may be truly depressing on the pitch, off the pitch before and after remains as the main joy of following our club. The definition of a great day out ruined by 90 minutes of football.

Dean Mears, Dayne Whittle and Jonathan Kydd discuss another feeble performance this time versus 18th placed Forest at the 'World Famous City Ground' as the announcer called it where CFC threw away a one goal lead with a bizarre second half performance where they only had one shot and rarely entered the oppo's half of the field. They then discussed whether it was the players' fault or the manager or a combination of the two. Dean believed we'd beat Citeh on Thursday! But JK and Deano foresaw embarrassment.

Stamford Chidge, Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan take a look back at the 2005-06 Chelsea season.

In part two the boys pick up the season in January with Chelsea top of the league and 11 points clear of Man Utd. Confidence for a back-to-back Premier League title was understandably high together with the chance of a first 'double' for the club, adding an FA Cup and another tilt on the Champions' League having made the semi-finals in the previous two seasons.

Chelsea made hard work of dispatching Huddersfield in the FA Cup round 3 before dropping their first points in the league at home to Charlton. A 1-1 draw in the FA Cup fourth round at Everton was followed by a 1-1 draw away to Villa. Three matches without a win having broken the club record of 10 consecutive wins beforehand? Was this a wobble?

A comprehensive 2-0 defeat of Liverpool at home with Crespo outstanding, proved otherwise, and everything seemed back on track with a 4-1 thumping off Everton in the FA Cup replay. But a 3-0 defeat away to Middlesbrough was one of the shocks of the season and came out of nowhere and not the ideal preparation for the Champions League round of 16 tie against Barcelona,

In the first leg, Chelsea were robbed by a terrible refereeing decision when Del Horno was sent off for 'being in Messi's way' and although Chelsea put in a brilliant performance when down to 10 men, Barcelona won 2-1. 58 home games and a first defeat in 90 minutes for Jose and only our 3rd home defeat in Europe. Of course this proved a mountain to climb in the second leg and Chelsea were duly knocked out by the eventual winners of the trophy.

Before that Chelsea was rocked by the untimely death of club legend and 'King of Stamford Bridge' Peter Osgood. An emotionally charged match against Spurs gave everyone a chance to say farewell to Ossie and William Gallas' last minute winner rounded the day off perfectly.

Chelsea entered April 14 points ahead of Liverpool and 15 ahead of Man Utd. Supporters were confidently weighing up when the title would be won. A superb performance beating West Ham having gone a goal down and reduced to 10 men all but confirmed matters and beating Man Utd, by then our nearest rivals with 3 matches to go would seal the title.

Before that the matter of an FA Cup semi-final against Liverpool needed to be won. Thanks to a limp performance and some poor finishing, Liverpool knocked Chelsea out of another cup competition but a week later, Chelsea made amends with a Joe Cole inspired demolition of Man Utd to be crowned back-to-back Champions.

In part two we discuss the forthcoming transfer window: what is happening/will happen? Is it better to wait until the summer? We also look at the Behdad Eghbali interview with Sportico and ask who is he trying to kid?

In part three we preview the Nottingham Forest v Chelsea match. Adam and JK report on the Potter Presser, Chidge presents his team selection and we discuss the history of this fixture which hasn’t been seen since 1999, before giving our match predictions.

Stamford Chidge, Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan take a look back at the 2005-06 Chelsea season.

Chelsea entered their centenery season as Premier League Champions with a new kit and a new badge to celebrate it. Hopes were high that more trophies would be won this season with the 'Special One' at the helm, but could we be become back-to-back Champions?

Chelsea secured their first trophy of the season in a 2-1 win against nemesis Arsenal in the Community Shield; notable mainly for Drogba scoring against Arsenal, in a final and bullying their defence in the process. Our defence of the title could not have started better with 7 wins, no goals conceded and 13 scored. By the end of September Chelsea were already 10 points clear of their nearest rivals, Man Utd, at the top of the table.

The Champions League was proving a little more troublesome, with Chelsea in the same group as Liverpool, the current holders. While points were dropped at Anfield in a 0-0 draw, Chelsea turned up at Anfield a couple of days later in the league to inflict a 4-1 defeat on them. Liverpool’s biggest home defeat since 1969 and Chelsea’s biggest win at Anfield.

The only blip in the first half of the season were away defeats to Real Betis in the Champions' League, a 1-0 away defeat to Man Utd and Charlton knocking us out of the Carling Cup on penalties. Typically, Jose claimed that our impregnable home form remained in tact as losing on penalties didn't count!

December was negotiated expertly, including the first 'Double' over Arsenal for the first time in 36 years in a 2-0 win, the last time we would play at Highbury. Chelsea finished the year top of the league 11 points clear with 55 points, above Utd on 44 and equalling last season’s points tally and record at this stage of the season, with one draw and one defeat. Chelsea had played 38 games in 2005 and won 101 points a remarkable feat not told enough.

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Chelsea author Mark Meehan to look back at Chelsea's 2004-05 season.

In part two, we pick up the story in January 2005. Under the management of Jose Mourinho, Chelsea were top of the league, 7 points clear with 55 points, the largest points tally at this stage in the PL ever, and were fighting for trophies on all fronts with qualification for the Champions' League round of 16 achieved with 13 points and a Carling Cup semi-final against Man Utd to look forward to in the New Year as well as the FA Cup.

All eyes were on Stamford Bridge as we took on Man Utd in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final. A cagey 0-0 with Utd using every trick in the book was followed by a 2-1 win at Old Trafford to seal a place in the final at the Millenium stadium in Cardiff. The arrival of Abramovich and Mourinho notwithstanding, this was Chelsea's 12th cup semi-final in 12 seasons and the first time defeat had been inflicted on Alex Ferguson's Utd in a domestic semi-final.

Back in the Premier League Chelsea passed the stern 'can they do it on a cold night in Blackburn' test standing up, literally to the physical intimidation meted out by Mark Hughes dirty side. Arguably this was the match that sealed the title for Chelsea, at least in terms of belief.

February and March brought a plethora of high profile and must win matches which was to become the norm for Chelsea througout Abramovich's tenure. Newcastle knocked us out of the FA Cup, ending the pursuit of all four trophies. Barcelona beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Nou Camp in a controversial match where we had the upper hand until Drogba was sent off by Anders Frisk for a dubious second yellow. And in the space of a week, Chelsea defeated Liverpool in the Carling Cup final having gone 1-0 down after a Riise goal on 1 minute and rescued by a Steve Gerrard goal on 79 minutes, before Drogba and Kezman settled matters in a 3-2 win.

March saw the return of Barcelona to Stamford Bridge and one of the greatest matches ever seen in the club's 100 year history as Chelsea stormed to a 3-0 lead inside 20 minutes only to be pegged back by a remarkable Ronaldinho goal which left the crowd silent in consternation, before John Terry ensured a 4-2 win on the night and a 5-4 win on aggregate. A quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich was Chelsea's reward and another classic played out in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, almost matching the Barcelona match for excitement and quality, with one of Frank Lampard's best goals for the club a highlight in a 4-2 win. Chelsea got the job done in the last match to be played at the Olympiastadion albeit with a couple of late goals from Bayern to cause more anxiety than we needed.

Attention moved back to the Premier League. Would Chelsea win it against Fulham on the 50th anniversary to the day of our our first league title? Had we not drawn at home to Arsenal we would have, but we were destined to wait until the Bolton away match, just as Jose Mourinho had predicted months ago.

The small matter of the club's second and consecutive Champions' League semi-final against Liverpool preceded Bolton. Thanks to a solitary ghost goal by Luis Garcia at Anfield, Chelsea were denied a final appearance again and our modern rivalry and enmity with Liverpool and Rafa Benitez was confirmed.

It should have been crushing, but in truth it wasn't, because a few days earlier, Chelsea defeated Bolton thanks to two Frank Lampard goals to lift the Premier League for the first time in their history. Many of us never believed we'd see the day; tears were shed, friends were embraced and a massive party in the Kings Road ensued.

On the 2nd June 2004, something very special happened at Chelsea. Jose Mourinho arrived proclaiming himself the 'Special One' and things at Chelsea would arguably never quite be the same again. Bolstered by the transfers of Petr Cech, Paulo Ferreira, Arjen Robben, Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho hopes were high that Chelsea might go one better than the 2nd place in the league from the previous season and win their first Premier League title; their first league title for 50 years and in what would be their centenary year.

The bouyant mood of the summer seemed justified as Chelsea remained unbeaten in all competitions until October 16th. But after the 1-0 away defeat to Man City, they picked up the pace again, knocking Arsenal off top spot on November 6th after a 1-0 win at home to Everton.

Critics and naysayers accused Chelsea of being boring and functional as they ground out a lot of 1-0 wins, but once the flying wingers of Damien Duff and Arjen Robben returned from injury, Chelsea went up through the gears putting four past opponents regularly and playing scintillating football in the process. Equally important, they had not been beaten by title rivals such as Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool and had dismissed bottom half teams with relative ease, banana skins and glorious unpredictability seemingly banished by our 'special' manager.

By the end of the year Chelsea were top of the league, 7 points clear with 55 points, the largest points tally at this stage in the PL ever, and were fighting for trophies on all fronts with qualification for the Champions' League round of 16 achieved with 13 points and a Carling Cup semi-final against Man Utd to look forward to in the New Year as well as the FA Cup.

Historically, Chelsea supporters would be asking the question "what could possibly go wrong" with knowing cynicism but at the turn of the year many genuinely felt, absolutely nothing.

In a typically forthright and up front interview Kerry talks to Martin King & Stamford Chidge about his career at Chelsea; his relationship with Ken Bates; playing for England; his best goals and what it was like to hear 40,000 Chelsea supporters chanting “One Kerry Dixon” at Wembley when he was playing for Luton!

With 193 goals to his name, Kerry Dixon is Chelsea’s third highest goal scorer of all time, behind only Bobby Tambling and Frank Lampard. Over nine seasons between 1983 and 1992, Kerry became one of the best loved players ever to appear for Chelsea.

Following near relegation to the Third Division Kerry joined from Reading for £175,000 as John Neal sought to rebuild the team, Kerry scored 34 goals in his first season as Chelsea claimed the Second Division title.

Scoring an iconic goal against Arsenal at Highbury in Chelsea’s first match back in the top flight, Kerry scored 36 goals to win the Golden Boot and took his Chelsea tally to 70 in just 101 games, earning a call up to the England squad in the process. Kerry was given a start against West Germany and responded by creating a goal for Bryan Robson before scoring two of his own as England beat the Germans for the first time in over a decade.

A serious muscle injury in January 1986 hampered both Kerry and Chelsea’s tilt at winning the title and a mere two years later, Chelsea found themselves back in Division two. Although player unrest nearly led to Kerry’s departure, Chelsea and Kerry bounced back with Kerry scoring 25 league goals as he won the Second Division title for the second time. Kerry went on to score 26 goals on Chelsea’s return to Division One as we finished fifth, our highest position since 1970.

In March 1992, Kerry’s 193rd, and final, goal in a Chelsea shirt was a a spectacular shot from the edge of the box to beat Norwich City. That summer he was sold for £575, 000 to Southampton

But that wasn’t quite the final moment in the love affair between Chelsea and Kerry Dixon. When Chelsea faced Luton Town and Wembley for the 1994 FA Cup semi-final, lining up at centre-forward for Luton that day was a certain Kerry Dixon. At the end of the match that Chelsea won 2-0, Chelsea supporters massed broke off from their celebrations to pay a final tribute to one of the club’s favourite sons, 40, 000 voices rightly proclaiming that there really was ‘only one Kerry Dixon’. A fitting tribute to a true Chelsea legend.

With 193 goals in total to his name, Dixon is Chelsea’s third highest goal scorer of all time, behind only Bobby Tambling and Frank Lampard. He is also eighth in the club’s all-time appearances list. His two Second Division championship medals being his only honours with the club.

Saturday promises to be another very tough match with Newcastle riding high in third place and if Chelsea lose their fourth domestic match in a row, they might be in10th place by Monday; on the bright side, win it and we could be in 5th! Stamford Chidge interviews Paul Canoville, Chelsea's first black player and a skilful winger in his day, forever remembered for that game against Sheffield Wednesday.

Paul Canoville was Chelsea’s first black player and his story is incredible. Subjected to racist abuse on the terraces, Paul had to show huge strength of character and dignity to win over too many of his own supporters.

Highlights of Paul’s all too brief Chelsea career included a hat-trick against Swansea, but he played a crucial part in the legendary 4-4 draw away to Sheffield Wednesday in the Milk Cup in 1985, coming on as a second half substitute with Chelsea 3-0 down. Paul scored twice, his first after just eleven seconds, as Chelsea salvaged a remarkable draw.

In arguably one of his most forthright, honest and moving interviews yet, Paul talks about his time as one of John Neal's great side; the players, the matches and the goals and his struggles with racism, drug addiction and homelessness after football.

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Chelsea authors Mark Meehan and Mark Worrall to look back at Chelsea's 2003-04 season.

In part two we pick up the story in the New Year and as is traditional the focus was on the FA Cup. It took a replay to get past Watford and then a fraught 1-0 win away to lowly Scarbrough before a 5th round tie against our nemesis Arsenal. Jose Antonio Reyes two goals in the second half make it four years in a row that Arsenal knocked Chelsea out of the FA Cup. Sickening, and made worse by a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the League days later. Would we ever beat Arsenal? At that moment it seemed unlikley.

Meanwhile, Chelsea were progressing to the Champions League quarter finals courtesy of a 1-0 win away to Stuttgart Chelsea's 16th away win of the season and a new record. But who would their opponents be? Arsenal of course!

Chelsea drew the first leg at home 1-1 in a cagey affair where Desailly was sent off. But could Chelsea do what no team had managed to do this season and beat Arsenal? In one of the most dramatic and memorable matches in the club's history, Chelsea won 2-1 with Wayne Bridge's winning goal (that sent us out of control) three minutes time meaning 17 games of hurt were now over. Arsenal players were on their knees and in tears and disbelief at the final whistle. Claudio Ranieri was in tears too and we were ecstatic. Joyous. 

The casualty of our European success was the league where a 0-0 draw at home to Middlesbrough, a 3-2 defeat away to Villa and 0-0 draw at home to Everton ended our title hopes. It all came down to the Champions' League semi-final, against unfancied Monaco, managed by former blue Didier Deschamps.

In the away leg, under pressure Ranieri who had been called a 'dead man walking' for several weeks now, completely lost the plot. Not helped by having to play Ambrosio due to Cudicin's lengthy spell injured and some extraordinarily bizzarre substitutions when we should have held out for a 1-1 draw, the 3-1 defeat left Chelsea a mountain to climb in the second leg. This proved to be the case although Chelsea were unlucky to concede a goal thanks to Ibarra's hand on the stroke of half-time when 2-0 up and looking good. Ulitmately Chelsea and Ranieri had blown it in the first leg.

A good 1-1 draw and a 1-0 defeat of Leeds to relegate them was enough to secure Chelsea's highest league position since 1955, but this was not enough for Abramovich as Ranieri's walk came to an end a few weeks later.

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Chelsea authors Mark Meehan and Mark Worrall to look back at Chelsea's 2003-04 season.

On July 1st 2003, Chelsea and English football changed for ever. Roman Abramovich bought debt ridden Chelsea for £60m and then embarked on the biggest spending spree ever seen; £111m on 11 players including Glen Johnson; Wayne Bridge; Damien Duff; Geremi; Juan Sebastien Veron; Joe Cole; Adrian Mutu; Hernan Crespo and Claude Makalele. Surely this woudl mean a serious tilt at Chelsea's first league title since 1955?

Claudio Ranieri remained manager and he must have felt like a kid in a sweet shop. The new look Chelsea started well with their first surprise defeat at home to Besiktas in the Champions' League and a less surprising but routinely disappointing defeat away to Arsenal in October. Nevertheless, Chelsea were top of the league in October and November with some impressive wins against Newcastle and Man Utd in the league and a 4-0 drubbing away to Lazio in the Champions League.

However, December brought a couple of blips with the 2-1 defeat at home to Bolton and 4-2 defeat at Charlton which left Chelsea in 3rd at the end of the year. We had also been knocked out of the Carling Cup by Aston Villa who were third from bottom at the time.

This was not what Roman Abramovich expected having spent a fortune on players, even though Chelsea had accrued their biggest points total ever for that stage of the season. Rumours abounded that Abramovich, aided by new Chief Executive Peter Kenyon were on the look out for a new manager, not helped with Sven Goran Erikson spotted next to Abramovich in the director's box. Maybe Ranieri had too many good players to choose from and as ever, could not resist the urge to tinker?

All this while the best performing players were all players who were at the Club before Abramovich arrived, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Frank Lampard and John Terry all prominent.

So, all to play for in the second half of the season, but could Chelsea hunt down Arsenal, who, ominously had yet to be beaten in the season thus far.

In part one we discuss Todd Boehly's interview at the SALT Conference in New York this week. This is the first we’ve heard on the 'Boehly Plan'; should he have spoken to the football media & supporters first rather than a bunch of financiers and businessmen? Was there equivocation regarding a return to the ESL? Why all the furore about the All-Star game and is the multi-club model a good idea?

In part two we look back at Chelsea's oh so familiar 1-1 draw in the Champions' League against Salzburg. Potter's team selection and formation raised a few eyebrows and while there was more energy, as expected, chances were squandered and defensive frailties cost us. It all seemed a bit 'meet the new boss, same as the old boss'. With Mount looking back to his old self and Broja impressing as a substitute there may be the first seeds of hope, but how long will it take Potter to mould this side into something resembling a successful Chelsea side and can he deliver Top 4 to Boehly?

In part one, we discuss the defeat to Southampton in midweek and Chelsea's transfer business with Liam Twomey from The Athletic. At Southampton in midweek another poor performance against a weaker side and defensive frailties exposed by a fragile midfield. We ask are Chelsea soft?

Liam analyses Chelsea's transfer business and we ask has Tuchel got everything he needs? We now have a striker and defence has been sorted, but what about midfield? And the deadweight has been shipped out but why did Billy Gilmour go?

In part two we look ahead to the Chelsea v West Ham match. Is Tuchel's assertion that “We are a club in transition and we are paying the price for the last half a year of insecurity” valid? West Ham have been in patchy form, but played well v Spurs and are good on the counter and physical, which is worrying. Surely we can’t be as bad again; can we toughen up in time? And is Tuchel right that with the window shut everyone will know where they are and will now be 100% committed?

My Chelsea returns with Andy Cairns, singer and guitarist from the legendary band Therapy? to talk about his support of Chelsea. Formed in 1990, and influenced by bands such as Black Sabbath, Killing Joke, Sonic Youth, Rapeman, Hüsker Dü, Butthole Surfers, The Undertones, That Petrol Emotion, Captain Beefheart, Motörhead, Mudhoney, early Metallica, Fugazi and The Stooges, Therapy? are now in to a 32 year and 23 album career, selling out gigs all around the world.

In spite of growing up in Northen Ireland, Andy Cairns just happens to be a massive Chelsea supporter and season ticket holder since 1994, and a mate of Chelsea FanCast's Mark Meehan. We invited Andy in for a chat about how he became a Chelsea fan, his first game, favourite players growing up, his favourite matches, his best and worst Chelsea moments, his all time Chelsea hero and his favourite Chelsea chant.

Stamford Chidge is joined by Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan to look back at the 2002-03 season.

In part two we pick the season up in January. We lose to Arsenal away, again, 3-2 thanks to two goals in two minutes even though we get two back two minutes later. Chelsea beat Charlton 4-1 at home on what looks like a sandpit. We play like Brazil; Charlton lodge a complaint about the pitch.

While our league form is good and keeps us in the top four, all eyes are on FA Cup success. After dispatching Middlesbrough, Shrewsbury and Stoke City, we face our bogey team Arsenal in the quarter-final. We draw 2-2 at Highbury having outplayed Arsenal for much of the match which means a replay at Stamford Bridge. Surely this time we can lay the bogey to rest? Sadly not as Chelsea lose 3-1 on an awful awful night including an own goal by John Terry, now sharing the captain's duties with Marcel Desailly.

Still hopes are high for a top four finish and Champions' League qualification whilst the title challenge slipped away. A wobble with defeats away to Villa (battling relegation) and West Ham (who get relegated) means it all boils down to the last match of the season at home to Liverpool.

In one of the most important matches in Chelsea's history, a place in the top four is at stake with the winner taking all. Liverpool go ahead on 11 minutes with Desailly equalising 3 minutes later. Gronkjaer is the unlikely hero with a shot bent in to the right hand corner thanks to him slipping as he kicked it. Chelsea hang on to win and Zola comes on for a cameo for what would be his last appearance for Chelsea and gives Carragher twisted blood for old times sake.

What we didn't know at the time was that had Chelsea lost, the club may well have gone in to administration having announced debts of £99 million and a loss of £16.4 million. Not only did Chelsea's victory guarentee lucrative Champions' League football, it paved the way a few weeks later for the arrival of Roman Abramovich and things at Chelsea would never be the same again...

Chelsea began the season with only one signing, Quique De Lucas, the scurrying midfielder from Espanyol on a free. Money was tight and runours abounded that Chelsea were in financial trouble and as a consequence would have to off load big nae stars such as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Gianfranco Zola.

As it was Chelsea began the season in decent form with draws against Arsenal and Man Utd and a 3-0 home win against fancied Newcastle. A last minute goal by former non-league player Ben Wright in the first leg of the UEFA Cup first round against Norwegian part timers, Viking FK, should have been no more than an irritant. But it came back to haunt Chelsea as they were knocked out of Europe for the 3rd season in a row by lowly opponents with a 4:2 defeat to the Vikings in the second leg, sandwiched in between a 3:2 defeat at home to struggling West Ham.

Thankfully, form picked up and it was to be two months before Chelsea suffered defeat again, at the hands of Man Utd in the Worthington Cup courtesy of a rarity, a Diego Forlan goal.

Chelsea finished the year in 2nd position in the Premier League and could have been top had it not been for the infernal tinkering of manager, Claudio Ranieri. Gudjohnsen and Hasselbaink were not scoring the goals they had the season before, but Gianfranco Zola was having a renaissance, at one stage the Premier League's top goal scorer and scoring some eye opening goals.

Could Chelsea mount a realisitc challenge for the Premier League title in the New Year and break the Arsenal and Utd duopoly? Was it more likely that we could have another crack at the FA Cup, going one better than last season?

Stamford Chidge, Jonathan Kydd and Mark Meehan look back at the 2001-2002 season in our ’50 Years of Chelsea’ series.

In part two we pick up the story in the New Year where hopes were high for another League Cup final after a 2-1 win in the semi-final first leg against Spurs, followed by a 5-1 rout of West Ham in the league.

However, the unthinkable happened when Spurs thrashed Chelsea 5-1 in the second leg, their first victory over Chelsea at White Hart Lane or anywhere for over 20 years. Thankfully, normal service was resumed with back to back 4-0 victories against Spurs in the FA Cup quarter final and Premier League, with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scoring a perfect hat-trick in the latter. In the FA Cup third round, Gianfranco Zola had scored one of the best goals ever seen at Stamford Bridge.

With league from suffering from the usual inconsistency, our only hope of silverware lay in the FA Cup. A scrappy 1-0 victory over Fulham in the Villa Park semi-final, complete with mass celery throwing, set up a final at the Millenium stadium in Cardiff against bogey side Arsenal. Blighted by injuries to Le Saux, Hasselbaink, Babayaro and an increasingly influential John Terry, Chelsea were the better side in the final until Ray Parlour and Freddie Ljundberg both scored worldies to ruin the day out.

The 2001-2002 season was one of transition, turmoil off the pitch and frustration on it. Given that Hasselbaink and Gudjohnsen had scored 52 goals between them a 6th place finish in the league was a disappointment. Arsenal proved to be the team we just could not beat as we finished FA Cup runners up; the League cup semi loss to Spurs still causes nightmares and the UEFA Cup defeat against lowly Hapoel Tel Aviv was a debacle.

Many supporters blamed Ranieri for his tinkering and sparse use of the genius that was Zola, but there were bright spots in the season with the Hasselbaink and Gudjohnsen's partnership and goals up front, the best we'd seen since the days of Dixon and Speedie, and the emergence of John Terry and Frank Lampard as two of Chelsea's most important players together with Carlo Cudicini who had a superb season in goal and rightly won POTY.

Claudio Ranieri's first summer transfer window brought four key signings with Bolo Zenden and Emanuel Petit arriving from Barcelona, William Gallas from Marseille and Frank Lampard, the talented young midfielder, from West Ham for £11 million.

The new signings took time to settle in and with the departures of Denis Wise, Gus Poyet and Frank Leboeuf, there was an air of transition about the club. Although Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen were forming a deadly partnership up front, Chelsea were drawing too many games, evidenced by their position outside the top four in the Premier League.

Off the pitch, controversy reigned with John Terry, Frank Lampard, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jody Morris getting caught by the News of the World drunkenly abusing American tourists in shock at the awful events of 9/11. The media also had a field day when Desailly, Le Saux, Petit, Gudjohnsen, Gallas and Ferrer elected not to play in the UEFA Cup natch against Hapeol Tel Aviv due to security concerns. Chelsea were knocked out by the Israeli side but supporters were bouyed by performances in the Worthington Cup where Coventry, Leeds and Newcastle were despatched to set up a semi-final against Spurs in the New Year.

December saw some of the best performances of the season with a 3-0 away win at Man Utd, a 4-0 demolition of Liverpool at home and a 2-1 win away to top of the table Newcastle. It looked like it would be all to play for in the New Year...

Stamford Chidge and Martin King interview John Bumstead, an unsung hero for Chelsea, and talk about his love for the club; what it was like to experience the lows of relegation and highs of promotion during the 1980’s; playing for John Neal and Bobby Campbell and playing with the likes of Nigel Spackman and Kerry Dxion and against David Platt and Paul Gascoigne

John Bumstead or Johnny B as he was affectionately known by the supporters, played for Chelsea from 1978 until 1991, making 409 appearances, the 9th highest appearance maker for Chelsea and scoring 44 goals.

There are few Chelsea players who have experienced the rollercoaster of what it was like to play for Chelsea in that 13 year period of the doldrums of Division Two; near relegation to Division Three; promotion to Division One; winning the Full Members Cup; relegation back to Division Two via a play off and then promotion again the next season with a record number of points. Throughout it all he remained loyal to his boyhood club until being transferred to Charlton.

Johnny B was the ultimate selfless team player, playing at the heart of Chelsea’s midfield, doing the simple things very well and he hardly ever had a bad game for the club.

He may have been small in stature but he was a steely competitor and his fearless, courageous challenges meant that injuries were a recurring theme throughout his career. He had an eye for goal and was an accomplished free kick taker with his last goal for Chelsea coming in a 3-2 victory over Spurs on December 1st 1990, the start of an unbeaten run against our North London rivals that was to last for 28 years. But perhaps he should best be remembered for the way he could shackle opposition flair players from the likes of Tony Currie to David Platt and Paul Gascoigne.

If you were to sum John Bumstead up, I can think of no better description than understated excellence.

Stamford Chidge and Martin King interview Colin Pates, who grew up supporting Chelsea as a boy and went on to play for the club for ten years, captaining the side back to Division 1 and the first Chelsea Captain to lift a trophy at Wembley. Colin opens up on his time playing for Chelsea; the highs and lows; the team that John Neal built; the Full Members Cup Final; the relationship with the supporters and his disappointment at leaving the club.

Colin Pates made 346 appearances for Chelsea between 1979 & 1988, 137 as Captain. The era Colin played in for Chelsea, was among the most turbulent in the Club’s history with the lows of relegation and the highs of promotion; Division 1 title challenges; winning the Full Member’s Cup and beating the mighty Liverpool FC, European Champions at the time, in the FA Cup.

Colin was made captain at the age of 22 and showed maturity beyond his years by moulding together the different groups within the dressing room. More than that, his classy displays as a ball-playing defender who read the game superbly, matched his impressive captaincy of a club on its way back to the top.

Pates was a player who served the club with commitment and distinction for nearly ten years, having supported them as a boy.

Stamford Chidge and Martin King interview Gary Chivers, who played for Chelsea from 1979 to 1983.

Having joined Chelsea as a youth player, Gary Chivers made his debut as an 18 year old against Middlesbrough in April 1979. By a strange quirk of fate Gary’s last match for the club was also against Middlesbrough a mere four years later, with the club escaping a drop in to Division Three by the skin of their teeth. In between, Gary enjoyed or more accurately endured some of the leanest, up and down eras of Chelsea Football Club. 

In an engaging interview, Gary talks about players such as Ron Harris, Ray Wilkins, Mike Fillery, Duncan McKenzie and Johan Cruyff and the managers he played for such as Danny Blanchflower and Geoff Hurst as well as some of the matches he played in.

Stamford Chidge interviews John Boyle, a key player in Chelsea's 'Kings of the Kings Road' side of the 1960's and '70's. 

Born in Motherwell, Scotland, John Boyle signed for Chelsea as a 15-year-old whilst on holiday in London. He made his Chelsea debut on 20th January 1965 in a League Cup semi-final against Aston Villa as an 18-year-old which Chelsea won 3-2.

John Boyle was something of an unsung hero and yet vital player for the successful ‘Kings of the Kings Road’ Chelsea side of the 1960s and early 1970s and will be remembered by many supporters as a tenacious ball winning midfielder.

An absolute gentleman with a softly spoken Scottish brogue, John reflects on his time playing for Chelsea, some of the great players and managers of that era, his relationship with the fans and some of the huge domestic and European matches he played in for Chelsea

Stamford Chidge & Martin King interview Tommy Baldwin, a stalwart of our '70's Cup winning sides.

Tommy Baldwin made 239 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 92 goals from 1966-1974 winning FA Cup & European Cup Winners Cup medals in 1970 & 1971.

Tommy Baldwin, Peter ‘Ossie’ Osgood and Charlie Cooke were the heart of the infamous ‘Kings of the Kings Road’ Chelsea side, both on and off the pitch. They had flair and entertained on the pitch and did likewise off it; drinking in the Kings Road with actors and actresses every night; a real showbiz team.

Such is the esteem in which Baldwin is held by Chelsea supporters, a terrace chant created in his honour many years ago is still sung regularly to this day. ‘His name is Tommy Baldwin, he’s the leader of the team…' very few who saw him play would argue with that and we all know what would happen if you did!

Stamford Chidge interviews Bobby Tambling, Chelsea's second highest goalscorer.

Bobby Tambling is most widely known for being Chelsea’s record goal scorer for over 40 years; scoring 202 goals in only 370 games from 1958-1970. 

Martin King and Stamford Chidge were privileged to interview Bobby about playing and learning from the great Jimmy Greaves; the differences in approach between Tommy Docherty and Dave Sexton; the game at Villa Park where he scored 5 goals; the pain of defeat against Spurs in the 1967 FA Cup Final and missing out in the 1970 final as well as following the careers of Kerry Dixon and Frank Lampard wondering which one might break his goal scoring record.

Stamford Chidge interviews Kelvin Barker about his new book: "Days (I'll Remember All My LIfe)"

Kelvin Barker, author of 'Celery: Representing Chelsea in the '80's' and writer for cfcuk, talks about his new book "Days (I'll Remember All My LIfe)". Celebrating the 50 years Kelvin has been following Chelsea, the book is a rollercoaster of emotions entiwined with a touching personal journey.

In the book, it all begins with Kelvin's first match - Chelsea v Ipswich Town in 1973 and continues with him recalling momentous matches for Chelsea over the last 50 years including Chelsea v Hull City in 1977; Chelsea v Liverpool in 1982; Arsenal v Chelsea in 1984, the 1997 FA Cup final, and the Champions' League finals in 2008 and 2012, right up to Chelsea v West Ham in 2019, alongside more idiosyncratic matches such as Chelsea v Orient in 1978 and even Wrexham v Dagenham & Redbridge in 2019.

While each match has significance for Kelvin as a Chelsea supporter, they also note a particular personal memory or milestone as he goes from wide eyed boy to world weary middle age.

The book in many ways is a love letter to his family and friends and especially to Chelsea, his constant companion for 50 years. Chelsea haven't always made him happy, they have sometimes reduced him to tears, but as summer begins to turn to autumn in the relationship, Kelvin has decided that, just like his life, it all turned out nicely in the end.

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Mark Meehan to look back at Chelsea's 2000-2001 season.

In part two we pick up the story in the New Year with a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at home on New Years' Day. Behind the scenes there was still unrest with Captain Dennis Wise and 'keeper Ed de Goey dropped. Wise, unhappy about being frequently played out of position put in a transfer request while de Goey was consigned to the bench and replaced by Carlo Cudicini for the rest of the season.

New signing Jesper Gronkjaer made a big impression with goals and assists against Gillingham in the FA Cup and Newcastle and running Gary Neville ragged in the 1:1 draw against Man Utd at home. Of Ranieri's first signing, Slovisa Jokanovic, the less said the better,

Pitted against bogey side Arsenal at Highbury in the FA Cup 5th round, two Wiltord goals in 11 minutes meant that Chelsea would not be at a cup semi-final or better for the first time since 1993.

Chelsea's home form was good, but their away form terrible, evidenced by their first away win for a year coming against West Ham in March. Ultimately it was to damage their chances of a top 3 finish, although defeat to Sunderland and Charlton at home and an away defeat to Leeds Utd, their rivals for a top 3 finish, put the final nail in the coffin.

Victories over Everton and Man City and a creditable draw away to Liverpool was enough to secure 6th place and qualification for next season's UEFA Cup, however, the season remained a massive disappointment with the sacking of well-loved Vialli whose name was chanted throughout the season and especially at bizarre decisions from Ranieri. To this should be added the early exit from the cup competitions; the injuries to Di Matteo and Stanic and the general feeling that many of the players wanted away.

In fact, the greatest disappointment was the realisation that the team of the 90's was breaking up with the departures of Vialli, Petrescu, Di Matteo and Flo gone and Poyet, Leboeuf and Wise soon to depart, along with Zola apparently wanting to return to Italy. Chelsea was a team in transition and that meant the dream of winning the league title was perhaps further away than ever.

After another FA Cup winning season and an encouraging debut in the Champions' League, Chelsea supporters expectations were set high for the 2000-2001 season. Could we finally have a crack at the Premiership?

Signing strikers Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen and Croation midfielder Mario Stanic and victory over Man Utd in the Charity Shield and beating West Ham 4:2 in the first Premiership match with Stanic scoring a goal of the season contender, augered well. But five matches later, popular (with the fans anyway) manager Gianluca Vialli was sacked and replaced by Claudio Ranieri, with rumours of players plotting behind the scenes to get Vialli out.

Ranieri's reign started with the brilliant 3:3 draw against Man Utd at Old Trafford with Hasselbaink's exocet strike the stand out, but Di Matteo breaking his leg in the 1st round UEFA Cup defeat to St Gallen and the Worthington Cup defeat to Liverpool meant that by November Chelsea were out of two cup competitions and had only recovered from 16th position in the league to 10th.

November was a horrendous month with the team struggling with adapting to Ranieri's tactics and rotation, as well as injuries to key midfield players. Of the 5 matches played Chelsea lost 4 and drew 1. For all intent and purpose, the league campaign was over before it began, but could Chelsea still challenge for the european places?

The only bright spots in the season so far had been the superb goal scoring form of Hasselbaink and Gudjohnsen and the emergence of midfielder Sam Dalla Bonna and a certain young John Terry.

Stamford Chidge interviews Gary Thacker, author of a new book focusing on Chelsea's extraordinary Champions' League campaign of 2012, culminating in the club's first European Cup trophy.

By the early months of 2012, it was clear that the appointment of Andre Villas-Boas as head coach at Chelsea wasn't delivering the required success. Instead, the club was spiralling towards its worst season of the Roman Abramovich era. On 4 March, Villas-Boas was dismissed, with his former assistant Roberto Di Matteo made interim head coach until the end of the season. Struggling in the league and with their place in the Champions League in peril, it was an appointment designed to make the best of things until a permanent replacement could be sought in the summer. Instead, under Di Matteo's guidance, Chelsea embarked on a run of performances that not only led to an FA Cup triumph, but resurrected their European hopes with improbable victories over Napoli, Benfica and Guardiola's all-conquering Barcelona before, against all odds, winning the Champions League by defeating Bayern Munich in their own stadium. This is the story of a triumph that came out of the blue.

In part one, we discuss the latest situation with the Chelsea takeover. What happens next with the Boehly bid being announced as the preferred bid and will Sir Jim Ratcliffe's late bid derail the process. Also what did Nadine Dorries mean by Chelsea being on 'borrowed time' and does this have anything to do with the timing of the Ratcliffe bid?

We also catch up on today's press conference and look back at a massively frustrating 1-1 draw against Man Utd last Thursday.
