ARE NFTs INVESTMENTS?
Some people think NFTs are investments, but an investment is supposed to be a productive asset - like a stock which represents a company, which is supposed to create products and therefore - make profits which as shareholders, we take a portion of. NFTs are not productive assets because they don’t make anything. Instead, NFTs are Veblen goods.
WHAT ARE VEBLEN GOODS?
In 1899 a Norwegian economist named Thorstein Bunde Veblen published his Theory of the Leisure Class - where he came up with the idea of “conspicuous consumption. He observed the upper was buying things that they didn’t necessarily need - for a high price in order to signal to society that they were rich and successful. The things they were buying eventually became known as Veblen goods. As Veblen goods become more expensive, more people want to buy them.
As the second industrial revolution came about - we started to democratize the production of stuff - which meant ordinary people could virtue signal with their own "veblen goods". Anyone could buy “expensive looking things” and that meant Veblen goods had to evolve to keep their “exclusivity”. Today they are things like luxury cars, watches, and for a period of time - iPhones. As capitalism and technology lowers the cost of production - it's easier to obtain those goods which means Veblen goods had to evolve again.
NFTs ARE VEBLEN GOODS?
Yes. Think about it: what better way is there to signal to friends and strangers that you've made it - than owning a picture which is worth hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars. Now you might think that’s silly but what NFTs have done though is revolutionary. They democratized the chance to on something exclusive. Anyone can buy an NFT for $7 - that might eventually become worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and potentially change someone’s life - no other Veblen good before them - has had that kind of a network effect.
