Married with Children – Fathers and coming out
In 2020 Shaun established an online peer support group for gay men who have children from heterosexual relationships, sometimes called 'gay and married men'. The group, Gay Fathers Worldwide now boasts over 800 members from across the globe. Braden Hill on the Voice to Parliament and Indigenous LGBTIQA+SB research
Jacinta speaks to educator and researcher Professor Braden Hill about his extensive work on Indigenous LGBTIQA+SB health, student equity and access, and his recent advocacy videos about the Voice to Parliament Referendum. Professor Braden Hill is a Nyungar Wardandi man from the south-west of Western Australia and the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Equity and Indigenous portfolio Edith Cowan University, and is the Head of Kurongkurl Katitjin, ECU’s Centre for Indigenous Australian Education and Research. Braden has significant experience in Aboriginal education, and leading equity work in universities, and has lead significant research about LGBTIQA+SB Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, most recently being involved in the Walkern Katatdjin report about mental health for Indigenous LGBTIQA+ youth. Sexual Health Month with Women’s Health in the North
Jacinta and Jack kick-off sexual health month by speaking to Amelia and Tilly from the Sexual and Reproductive Health team at Women’s Health in the North (WHIN). Tilly and Amelia talk about what kind of work WHIN does in the northern metropolitan region of Melbourne, the current barriers and gaps that they see in sexual and reproductive health, especially for LGBTIQA+ people. We also discuss WHIN's Freedom, Respect and Equity in Sexual Health (FRESH) plan, which aims for "all women and gender diverse people [to] freely exercise their rights to positive,pleasurable and affirming sexual and reproductive health outcomes." Tilly Mahoney is a cis bisexual woman, and is the Sexual and Reproductive Health Coordinator at WHIN. Tilly has a Master of Public Health, and is passionate about freedom of choice, gender equity and LGBTQIA+ rights. Amelia Arnold is a cis bisexual queer woman who works primarily in health education, research, training and advocacy. Amelia oversees the sexual and reproductive health capacity building work at WHIN, and also works as a research associate with the Growing Queer Families Alliance at Monash University. Amelia is also on the Board at Switchboard, volunteers with Rainbow Families Victoria and is an ex radio girlie, co-hosting the Triple Bi Pass podcast. Michael catches up with James Seow, faciltator of Thorne Harbour Health's Gay Asian Proud (GAP) about events that support social connection for same sex-attracted Asian men. Gay Asian Proud holds regular art workshops, health talks, group discussions, yum cha lunches, team sports, and film nights for and by queer Asian men and occassionally other Asian identified LGBTIQ+ people and their partners, and allies. IAS 2023 – HIV Science as Art
Brisbane recently hosted the 12th International Conference on HIV Science (IAS 2023). Held in conjunction with the conference, HIV Science as Art is a new initiative pairing HIV positive artists from around the world with internationally renowned HIV scientists. The pairings then created original works that speak to some of the scientific advancements being presented at the global HIV conference. Cal Hawk talks to one of the exhibition's scientific curators Dr Talia Mota as well as one of the pairings - Taiwanese artist Kairon (Ren-Kai) Liu and social scientist Prof Kane Race. Kai talks about creating his piece and issues that surfaced in bringing the artwork into Australia. Adam Carr – Community Living Legend
Dr Adam Carr was a founding member of the Victorian AIDS Action Committee in 1983 and later served as President of the organisation in 1986-87 when it was the Victorian AIDS Council - today known as Thorne Harbour Health. He worked in gay community media from 1979 to 2001, including as editor of OutRage magazine. Chris Gill – Community Living Legend
Chris Gill was a founding member of the Victorian AIDS Action Committee back in 1983. As the organisation became the Victorian AIDS Council, Chris went on the worked in a number of volunteer and paid roles until the mid 1990s, including as foundation Manager of the People Living With AIDS Program and as Campaigns and Community Relations Officer in the Education Program. Chris also served as editor or the Melbourne Star Observer for 3 years from 1988 and was a Co–Convenor of the Victorian Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby (now the Pride Lobby). In the early 2000s, he helped set up the philanthropic Gay and Lesbian Foundation of Australia (now the Pride Foundation). This episode is part of the Community Living Legends series, reflecting on a legacy of community-driven action to improve our health and wellbeing as Thorne Harbour Health celebrates its 40th Anniversary. Phil Carswell – Community Living Legend
Phil Carswell OAM is a longstanding community advocate. Forged in the fires of gay and lesbian liberation, Phil was the Founding President of the Victorian AIDS Action Committee, later the Victorian AIDS Council, and today - Thorne Harbour Health. Phil worked tirelessly in leading the community response to HIV and AIDS in Australia both within community organisations and while working in government health departments Phil represented the Victorian AIDS Council on the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations Council which he also co-founded and was appointed as one of two gay community representatives to the National Advisory Council on AIDS chaired by Ms Ita Buttrose. In 2015, Phil received a Medal in the Order of Australia for services to public health, particularly for people with HIV/AIDS. Dr. Gene Lim, Research Officer from the Australian Research Centre for Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS) at La Trobe University joins the program to discuss how intimate partner violence impacts our LGBTQ community. Gene addresses implicit bias in healthcare settings, stigma, and prevalence of intimate partner violence in our community. Pansexual Visibility Day
Wednesday 24 May was Pansexual Visibility Day. The day serves as a platform to educate others about pansexuality, challenge stereotypes and misconceptions, and foster a sense of community among pansexual individuals. Being Pansexual, or Pan, refers to the potential for attraction to people regardless of their gender identity and Pan folk recognise that gender is not the sole determining factor for their romantic or sexual attraction. We are joined by Son Vivienne a non-binary, trans-masc, gender-queer, pansexual person who also happens to be CEO of Transgender Victoria, and also a past colleague of ours at Thorne Harbour Health. International Nurses Day – HIV and Sexual Health Nurses
Jacinta and Rachel recognise International Nurses Day (May 12) by speaking to Dr Liz Crock AM and Mark Thompson about their experiences as nurses working in HIV care and more. Dr Liz Crock AM talks about her experiences as a nurse in the early days of HIV. She worked at the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital in the HIV ward, and has continued to dedicate her work to addressing HIV stigma. Mark Thompson is an STI and HIV specialist nurse, and an LGBTI specialist nurse practitioner candidate. Mark discusses the importance of queer-affirming sexual health care and his experiences as a nurse in various settings. Everyday People
Everyday People is a new project exploring the lives of multicultural LGBTIQ+ people, and breaking down the stigma associated with mental health by sharing personal stories. First, we chat with Tony Bretton - cofounder of Pacifique X and panelist from the recent No Pride In Racism forum to discuss the importance of personal stories to our wellbeing. Later, Jacinta chats with Michael about the Everyday People project which is currently recruiting participants, the community advisory group, and also for community language checkers. Women in Leadership – Fiona Patten and Rachel Payne MP
Rachel and Jacinta speak to two legends in Victorian politics in the lead up to International Women's Day on 8 March - former MP and leader of the Reason Party (formerly known as Sex Party), Fiona Patten, and newly elected MP representing the Legalise Cannabis Party, Rachel Payne. Rachel Payne is a member of the Victorian Legislative Council representing the South-Eastern Metropolitan area since November 2022 and a member of Legalise Cannabis Victoria. Fiona Patten was a member of the Victorian Legislative Council between 2014 and 2022, representing the Northern Metropolitan Region until she lost her seat at the last state election in 2022. She recently received an honourable mentioned by the McKinnon Prize Shortlisting Committee, an independent, non-partisan award that acknowledges outstanding political leadership across the political spectrum. Rachel and Fiona, who have worked together for a number of years, discuss their experiences as women in leadership positions, in the Parliament of Victoria, and what they hope to see in the future. Longstanding advocate for people living with HIV (PLHIV) Greg Kelly joins Cal Hawk to discuss his new book "Start With Your Own Onion". The self-published autobiography weaves over 100 recipes into Greg's life story. During the show, Greg discusses the driving force behind his book, his diagnosis with HIV over 30 years ago, and how food can be a remarkable vehicle for human connection. Cervical Screening – Self Collection
Jacinta and Rachel chat to Gabe Curtis, a nurse at Equinox, the peer led trans, gender diverse and nonbinary (TGDNB) health service operated by Thorne Harbour Health. Gabe explains the newest method of cervical screening which is self collection, and also discusses the importance of informed consent and trauma-informed practice for all cervical screenings and health care in general. HIV and drug use research – Dr Thomas Norman
Rachel and Jacinta speak to Dr Thomas Norman from the Australian Research Centre for Sex, Health and Society about his research recent presentation about HIV and injecting drug use at the Australian Scientific Alcohol and Drug Conference in October 2022. International Lesbian Day
Rachel and Jacinta are joined by President of Dykes on Bikes Melbourne, TJ White, and PhD researcher, Hao Zheng, to chat about our experiences as lesbians and queer women ahead of this International Lesbian Day on 8 October. We find out about what it was like for dykes back in the 70s and 80s in Melbourne, including femme flagging practices, demonstrations and dances. We also hear about how queer and lesbian communities are built online and through mobilities globally. Hao Zheng is a PhD candidate at Deakin University. Hao’s research interests are in the areas of gender and sexuality, intersectionality, transnational mobilities, digital media cultures and lesbianism. Her doctoral research examines Chinese queer female students’ queer and adult identity making in Australia through the lens of time and temporality. TJ White is a lesbian elder, and President of Dykes on Bikes Melbourne.
