Rayne is a proud mother of three, her heart bursting with love for her children. However, her journey as a mother was intertwined with the overwhelming battle against burnout while facing challenges when one of her daughters began to grapple with mental health issues.

Her daughter's mental health crisis had a profound impact on Rayne, stripping away her personal joy and inner peace, while also straining her relationship with her daughter and her other children. 

It was an agonizing position to be in, a place that reverberated through every aspect of her life. 

Triggered by the circumstances, her own anxiety became a formidable adversary, blurring the lines between cause and effect. She found herself succumbing to its suffocating grip for an extended period, allowing it to consume her. 

However, slowly but surely, she began to reclaim her sense of self.

Lara Johnson has been married for 14 years, has 4 beautiful and diverse kids, 2 spicy cats, and a business she calls her 5th kid. She has the best job in the world helping moms live their lives ON purpose and WITH purpose.

One of Lara’s kids is neurodiverse and also has PDA which falls under Autism though presents a bit different.   

Normally I paraphrase someone's response when I ask them for their burnout story, but today I feel what Lara told me should not be changed…  

Lara’s Burnout Response -   

I think burnout for parents of "not average" kids is such a big deal. 

I love your question because it gave me some good reflection. I think the first phase of burnout was the total shutdown. It was combined with postpartum depression, and it was before an official diagnosis for my son. 

I had stopped sleeping, was not feeding myself but just grabbed junk food to shove into my face when I could, struggled to care for my family, cried a LOT, had random good days that tripped me up, and then pretended everything was fine to everyone else because I felt crazy. 

I think the second wave of burnout is what I lovingly call "functional burnout." I know when I start to teeter on this edge when I start pacing my house, staring at my phone to escape more, lose interest in being with people (different than my normal introverted ness), and I feel fatigued in my bones. 

I think every mom experiences this, but I feel when you have Neurodiverse kids, the pendulum swings much bigger and more often. 

I created what I call my Shit Storm Checklist.

It is a tool I used for myself, and that I now give to my clients. I call it the emergency preparedness plan for when the earthquake of life hits. It breaks down simple things to do to ground yourself and care for your nervous system. It is very effective and efficient so that we can still meet the demands of life without giving up. Then, we start easing our way back into joy and out of burnout. 

AS you just heard Lara’s journey through her burnout and life with Neurodiverse kids led her to be the amazing coach that she is today.

EP 21 - How I Raised My Overall Stress Tolerance In One Day!!

I’ve worked hard on the physical effect stress places on my body.  

  • Gut health -   diarhea, indigestion,  heartburn,  bloating
  • Hormones -  energy, mood swings, headaches,  irregular cycles, perimenopause struggles.
  • Nervous system so my body isn’t not kicking into a stressed state for every small stressor further taxing my gut and hormones. 

I made a ton of progress on my energy, moods and being a much happier person. 

BUT my HRV -  Body’s marker on how much stress it can handle - was stuck at a certain point.   No matter how many different pieces of the puzzle to get out of burnout and optimize my body I used my HRV was stuck at a certain point.  

I knew I was missing a piece of the puzzle because no matter what I tried  My HRV would not get past a certain point.  

And that missing piece is what we are going to dive into today.

Arjuna George spent the majority of his life as a Career FireFighter in the beautiful province of British Columbia, Canada. He dedicated ten years of his life as a Fire Chief, risking his own safety to protect his community. However, one day, he woke up and realized he couldn't do it anymore. Arjuna called into work and informed them that he wouldn't be coming in, not knowing that this would be the last day he would work for the job he loved so much.

It was a turning point for Arjuna. He realized he was suffering from severe burnout and trauma, and he needed to take a step back to focus on his own mental health and wellbeing. Arjuna immersed himself in learning and studying everything he could about healing and self-improvement, not only for himself but also to help other Fire Chiefs get their sleep, energy, and health back on track.

Arjuna went all-in on his journey to heal and recover from burnout, and he emerged as a certified TensionTrauma Release Practitioner - TRE,  Certified Executive Coach,  Certified Career and Work-Life Strategist,   Talent Management Practitioner, Recruiting and Talent Acquisition Certified, Coach for Imagery for Behavioral Change, Stress Management Coach, Sleep Science Coach,  Brain Fitness Coach 

His passion for helping others led him to write his book, Burnout Around the Edges, where he tells his story of recovery in detail. He is also the host of the Beneath The Helmet Podcast.

Simon is the founder of Mindful Men, a therapy practice that focuses on men's health and wellbeing. Simon is also a husband and father of two based in Queensland's Sunshine Coast. 

Simon's passion for mental health comes from living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Depression, Anxiety, and Burnout for the last 30 years. He is also the host of The Mindful Men Podcast.

In this episode, we delve into Simon's personal experience with burnout while working in the public sector. Simon shares how the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and workload put pressure on him, and how he slowly started to experience the symptoms of burnout. 

Simon talks about the strategies and techniques he used to overcome burnout and how he was able to return to work without risking burnout again.

    02 Are You Confusing Sleep Struggles With Burnout?

    In this episode, Andi dives into the question if we are confusing Sleep Deprivation with Burnout that stemmed from this quote:  

    • Heart attacks go up in those who slept less than 7 hours a night.
    • Those with 5 hours sleep on average had a higher rate of coronary artery disease and heart attacks.
    • Immune system suffers.
    • Risk of cancer increases.
    • Mental health links sleeplessness to anger, irritability, anxiousness and depression.

    Stress and sleep deprivation are pretty much aligned. There is a chance we are confusing them both.

    STAGE 1 & 2 - LIGHT SLEEP

    Stage 1 - Quick at the start of your sleep

    - Increases your alertness when awake.

    Stage 2 - More than half of our sleep time.

    - Increases your alertness when awake.

    Deep should be up to 20% of your total sleep time

    90 min is a good REM sleep on average REM should be 20- 25% of total sleep time

    It should take between 5 - 20 min to fall asleep.  Less than 5 minutes or more than 20 minutes indicates that you are sleep deprived.
